My last job ended in disaster -weather augh!

Featured Replies

Ok so earlier today I decide to fly a job, can't remember where I took off from, but the destination was Honolulu International, app 143km job carrying 3 passengers.

I chose dusk, and isolated thunderstorms for weather.

Everything was moving along nicely, wind stayed around 20-26 knts for the most part, still even with the Maule was a smooth ride at 6K ft. Of course by the time I got close, it was pitch black outside.

So about 18nm away, I start descending and before long my plane was getting thrashed every which way. I glanced at the wind speed on the hud, and it is bopping between 60kts up to 96 kts. The whole time I am trying to descend, I am just getting thrown all over the place. The passengers start throwing up - but that was the least of their worries. Down to less than 1K ft in altitude, still gettting thrashed all around, still pitch black outside, the Maule starts beeping and I am in a stall and descending rapidly. I try my best to get out of it, but no luck just not enough altitude left. We crash in the ocean, and of course I get the mission failed message. Had not gotten close enough to the airport to get a checkpoint, so the 1 hour + flight was all for not...

I don't know but seems to me all of a sudden winds in the 60-96 knot range are a bit much.

LOL db...

So let me get this right...

You're further than 5nm from the airport (I'm guessing this since you hadn't got the checkpoint yet)...

In a thunderstorm, getting bounced all around...

And you're UNDER 1000 ft !?!?

Well THERE'S your problem... ; )

Don; I feel your pain.

Unfortunately on several weather settings winds seem to be too volatile. I think there might be a bug there because of high winds too strong and persistent direction at different altitudes, sometimes changing to opposite even change direction in less than a second.

I have a saved game with persistent 260° 54-59 knot winds all around the map and from MSL to FL15.

All I can remember is I had set Among the Giants weather preset for a mission that took more than twice the normal time.

Anyway I recall someone posting a video here of a multiplayer session where they got persistent 96 kt. winds.

BTW: Rich has a point there!

Some of us pointed this out during the beta, but frankly don't know if the issue was addressed.

I was at 6000 ft, but started descending hoping I might get out of the mess I was in - unfortunately the crazy winds helped me get under 1000 ft faster than I wanted!

I would agree with that , little to extreme imho.

I was just teasing you a little, db...

My favorite happened last night... flew a nice short nurse job... landed smoothly... almost to the parking point... and WHAM!

Clipped ANOTHER taxiway sign...

I HATE those danged things! LOL

They should be made of foam rubber, or something...

Lol, I hear ya!

I just hated spending over an hour on a job to have it end like that - oh well, I will go back to flying in fair weather theme!

Don B

I was doing fine on the nurse/patient run until I tried to turn around on the runway. I must have turned a little too fast because I ended up with two sick passengers. Learn something new each flight.

I have no doubt that you'll get some severe wind gusts when in a towering cumulus... but the view out the window doesn't exactly show this condition.

LOL, i remember this because me and my friend were flying with you in a multiplayer session. We were landing at Lanai first and you were flying your Stearman. We waited for you to land and then started another flight to Kahului. That was fun :)

Hello Don,

I am not a weather expert myself so i don't know if those wind speeds are realistic for thunderstorms but i love flying that weather theme (i said this in probably 5 threads at least :P ).

It gets very tricky during a descent but even during cruise, it can give you a lot of trouble if you're flying with passengers. That is actually the main reason for my satisfaction percentage being only 70% :)

It can be very tiring to do long flights during this weather so i usually pick flights that are shorter than 80nm. I can imagine your frustration when you realized you didn't reach the checkpoint. The only thing you could probably do is

restart the mission, use "skip to waypoint" and just repeat the final and landing :)

Anyway, if you don't like isolated thunderstorms, make sure to try stormy weather as it is somewhat friendlier when it comes to wind speed but will present you with a moderate challenge to make a smooth landing, trust me.

Another interesting one is "Squalls" of course. So, i suggest doing few flights during different seasons since conditions differ quite a bit.

Have fun flying :)

Cheers

Many thanks, I will give those a try.

db, if that ever happens again, just start a new cargo mission hauling some monkeys. Take them up to 3000 ft then do some aerobatics. If you ain't laughing within 30 seconds, you need a real vacation. ;-)

Lol, I will have to keep that in mind!

Thanks,

I agree Don, tonight I flew around collecting some aerocaches after selecting the Isolated Thunderstorms weather scenario and could not believe the winds; 39-96 kts, variable and blowing my RV-6 all over the place violently. I don't remember the winds being that bad before; makes me think an adjustment has been made with the update. IMO, not a good one. A bit over the top I think, and I would prefer they be toned down.

Ken

It's not new. I was getting the same thing in the beta. It's fairly random. Good thing the thunderstorms are "isolated", huh?

No kidding, I think I will go back to fair weather for those long 100+ nm jobs.

Don B

There's a reason pilots avoid thunderstorms even the heavies. I can fly through thunderstorms in FSX without much issue, not in flight. To me that's a good thing, now if we can get a weather radar or at least some form of preflight weather briefing or ATIS to avoid such things.....
