May 3, 201214 yr i ran prime 95 and after about 20 mins my pc just switched off now it will only boot into windows on the cpu default settings any ideas on what went wrong my specs are i5 2500k asrock p67 pro 3 mobo and a nvidia gtx580 please help thanks Alexander Shepherd
May 3, 201214 yr your mb might have automatically shut down the system and reset the bios to its default settings because a temperature threshold was reached edit: when I first build my new system I didn't put the heat sink on that came with it because I had an H100 that I was going to put on later when I started to OC it. I haven't built a computer in years and didn't realize that even at stock speeds it needed a heat sink so the system just shut down and restored the default bios settings because it got too hot. Exactly what happened to you, that's why I mentioned it. Thank goodness for automatic shutdown lol

May 3, 201214 yr Author no i have a corsair h80 on full power with arctic silver thermal paste i set it to 5ghz with vcore at 1.48v do you think the cpu is screwed now the maximum temp it went to before it shut down was 77c Alexander Shepherd
May 3, 201214 yr 77c won't screw the cpu and shouldn't force the mb to automatically shut down the system. Others here know more about whether that is high temp to be running for extended periods of time.
May 3, 201214 yr Author it just seems strange that when i try to overclock it now it wont boot into windows Alexander Shepherd
May 3, 201214 yr yes, that's why it shut down right away. Doh... I just didn't know any better lol Holy cow!
May 4, 201214 yr yes, that's why it shut down right away. Doh... I just didn't know any better lol :o Now THAT is how you fry a CPU. LOL
May 4, 201214 yr Doh... I just didn't know any better lol :LMAO:. Did you have a redish glow coming from inside your computer or a mushroom cloud? ArDee

May 4, 201214 yr I had everything installed, it was the first boot. Got to the bios and it just shut down. Didn't know what it was so I was checking inside the case and my hand was over the cpu and I could feel the heat. So I put the H100 on and it booted right up. I've been running 3 months at 4.8Ghz with 1.39 volts so I think it's ok. I probably wouldn't sell it though. The last computer I built was an Intel 486 and we didn't have heatsinks then lol.

Just get the Intel tuning plan, I think it is $20 or $25, in case it fails in the future. Basically it is a factory replacement plan for OC'ing or activities not normally covered by the warranty.
