June 11, 201213 yr Hello gents. Yes, it's one of the million performance threads you're all so fond of! Shortly explained, I have a nice setup with my current FSX. I've followed 'bout every pinned or highly regarded topic/guide for tweaking, settings, nVidia inspecor, and so forth. I'm overall qutie pleased. BUT, now and then when I'm flying, I have periods of reduced framerates, which just is a pain in my lower back region. I'm currently externally limited to 29 in Inspector (tried other limiters, and other fps-rates as well, with no real change), and FSX's holding that limit just fine. Then suddenly it drops down to 15ish, maybe even dropping down to 10 now and then. It does that for a short while (less then a minute, usually), then pops back up to the limit. This occurs wiithin varying intervals, usually there's between 5 and 15 minutes separating each "inceident". I've googled and browsed and tried to find an answer to this riddle for ages, with no luck. The drops/drags happens regardless of the scenery below or the weather, and it's the same if I fly the NGX or the default C172. Now I'm getting tired of it all, and I turn to the bright minds of this forum to aid me in the search of an sollution. I have the following specs: Hardware: ASUS P6X58D-E, Socket-1366 Intel Core i7 Quad Processor i7-950 Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600MHz 6GB CL7 GeForce GTX 470 1280MB PhysX Software: Win7 64x Ultimate SP1 FSX June 11, 201213 yr Sounds like an annoyance indeed. Are you running anything with an autosave feature, Magnus? FSUIPC offers such a thing, but there may be more programs. Another one would be the weather program in use. When it updates the weather in FSX, some folks may notice a temporary slowdown. So maybe check the intervals on that end. To get a grip on the error sources, you might have to run some flights with disabled addons. E.g. to rule out any influence of the weather updates, try a flight with a fixed weather preset and not addon soft running and check if the slowdown still occurs. If not, one may look at the weather addon settings and perhaps the Simconnect connection. When running traffic programs, those intervals could also point to the time the program adds or 'kills' some planes in your surrounding. Sorry, lots of guesses. Does it happen with all detail settings (high or low) on e.g. autogen and traffic?
June 11, 201213 yr Check out Word Not Allowed's pinned guide I believe in the hardware forum. Start out with a fresh cfg and follow his recomendations and settings to the letter. It is optimized for overclocked sandy bridge systems but yours isnt to far behind to give it a try. Matt Wilson
June 11, 201213 yr You are not alone. It might depend a lot on addons and where you like to fly. I have two noticable places this same thing occurs. One is South of Vancouver,BC Canada near Delta. It turns out there are missing objects in the Vancouver + v3 scenery and that causes some issues with FSX. The second place is Victoria, BC...using Don Govestine's CYYJ, I believe that this is related to the object density and object complexity at that freeware airport. The recommendation above to look at where this might be occuring through disabling addons could help to locate the issue. Unfortunately this might take you some time to figure out. Make a note on locations that this occurs. Check to see if flying away from the region and returning has the same impact on framerates. IE flying away increases smoothness and framerates and returning the stutter happens and framerates drop some. Then check to see what addons might cover this area/region. Try disabling any addon covering this area to see if the problem goes away. In this way you can at least check to find the source of the problem. I can't recall the code lines you can enter into your FSX.CFG which will cause a dialog box to open during flight when it encounters a missing object in the scenery, search the forums here on this topic there has been plenty of discussion on the procedure. Another source of the problem could be missing textures on an object, that most likely is from an addon scenery. Lots of places to look for a solution, some more complicated than others to diagnose. Good luck. The drops/drags happens regardless of the scenery below or the weather, and it's the same if I fly the NGX or the default C172. If your sure its not addons then this is likely a system issue. Check your anti virus, disable it FSX. Check your firewall, disable it for FSX. Maybe your planes have modules that check the internet for updates or some other feature which I am not familiar with. Check what processes are accessing your computer memory or internet on regular basis. Maybe something like that is happening. Bryan Wallis aka "fltsimguy" Maple Bay, British Columbia Near CAM3

June 11, 201213 yr Before you look within, look around. Are you running anything on that computer that is using a lot of disk io, or a lot of CPU that may be kicking ok during those times? is your task bar full of a bunch of apps that are running in the background that might be auto updating or doing some other routine that might be resource intensive for a moment in time? Try eliminating as many unnecessary processes, or at least suspect ones for a start.
June 12, 201213 yr Commercial Member How fast are you flying and where? I sometimes see stutters when i cross a line of lattitude or longitude. I believe fsx loads in three 60 Mile squares of ai traffic when this happens. See the fsx SDK doc or my blog post crossing the meridian. Watch the coords with shift z to see if this is the case. That only applies if there are major airports in those squares of course. Ideally traffic addons should monitor position and inject traffic slowly but the one I use doesn't and hence I think I get this hit. Steve My FSX Analysis Blog
June 12, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the inputs so far, fellas! CoolP: No, I'm not running autosave (as I have a crashfree system, it don't bother. The only issue I experience, is the one I've made this thread about). Although I've done more tests than I can count, lately I've been focusing on hardware and tweaks to find the problem, so I'll double check your addon-suggestions. mpw8679: I've tried Word Not Allowed's guide, it helped set up my FSX nicely, but didn't change the random drops. fltsimguy: One thing I'm almost 100% sure about is that it's not scenery related. It happens wether something as demanding as ORBX is below me, or it's just the default scenery. I'll probably still check it out though, just to be safe. venustus: I've been through them, didn't solve it, thanks anyways. Oracle: That's probably the thing I've been exploring the least. I'll do tests closing as much as I can of background programs. stevejp: I only fly on VATSIM, and even if I do something offline I don't have any AI at all. And the problem occurs wether there's zero or fifty pilots within range. Thanks though. I'll be doing more extensive testing tests and report back with results (might be a day or two). Thanks again, all of you! Magnus Meese NGX Pilot VATSIM C1, SUP and Pilot
June 12, 201213 yr There are applications like Game Booster that shut down unneded background tasks when using FSX. Switchboard - Track Your Simulator Add-ons - Throttle Quadrant
June 15, 201213 yr I'm having the exact same problem. And it is not only in FSX, my Lock On FC2 also has occasional stutters. It started a few months ago, before that it was always smooth. I've tried different drivers, clean the memory but nothing changed. I don't know if it is a hardware problem or maybe a Windows wrong configuration.
June 15, 201213 yr Is anyone of you running dual or more monitors? I had occasional slowdowns related to it until I force max frequencies on my nVidia GPU. https://www.youtube.com/user/JustaRandomSimmer Simulator Videos http://sierra-hotel.blogspot.com Aviation Picture Blog
June 15, 201213 yr Your CFG file states the following: [bufferPools] PoolSize=2097152 Your video card only has 1 GB of RAM! I know the value can be a seven digit number and a value of 700000 = roughly 1 GB of VRAM, but I have a feeling you're maxing it out and this is probably why you are getting these fps dips and fluctuations because your video card RAM can't refresh (cache) itself fast enough? This is why I leave the FSX.cfg file alone and rely solely on the scenery sliders because we now have hardware that is capable of managing these sliders unlike the previous years where we had to limit and jerry-rig things for existing hardware configurations...
