June 12, 201213 yr A very impressive video!! This guy did an amazing job with this!! DIMITRI
June 12, 201213 yr The shots are undeniably pretty, but the composition and editing is not very good at all. Unfortunately, there's a lot more to making a decent film than pretty graphics, and if one ignores basic film-making technicues, it shows. There are a number of editing no-nos going on in it: not using the rule of thirds, not using saccades, and 'crossing the line' being just three of them. Even if the viewer doesn't know what any of those techniques are by name, most people inherently know when something is poorly edited and framed, because such techniques steer one's eye around the frame, which is why well edited films are more enjoyable to watch. Try watching it with the sound off and you will notice that the cuts from static to zooming and tracking shots jar badly with one another, and should have been cross-faded, and you will notice the shots where the tracking direction changes on edits sticking out like a sore thumb, and that's before one even starts matching the audio to a basic rough cut. I know all that sounds terribly picky of me, but I have to train people on how to do all that kind of stuff, so it kind of winds me up to see it all being ignored, and the result looks terrible to me. June 12, 201213 yr How can we make vids anyway? I assume we can't just start an FSX flight and film it directly off the monitor screen with a digicam or camcorder? I tried making a wargame clip that way and uploaded it to youtube but the quality was absolutely appalling, and to make things worse my digicam's auto-focus kept hunting and blurring as if it couldn't lock onto the screen.
June 12, 201213 yr Author No, you would have to use a video capture program like FS recorder. I personally use DXTORY. http://dxtory.com/v2-home-en.html DIMITRI
June 12, 201213 yr I like the colors and the scenery. I do agree with Chock because he made some very good points and the author should learn from them! Very constructive critique. But. When I did my first FSX video (I made 4 do far) I really didn't pay much attention to these rules (even though I knew most of them) and in the creative process some rules are meant to be broken... sometimes. I personally use DXTORY. How is the quality and performance in comparison to FRAPS? I use FRAPS but it's a FPS eating monster and one of the reasons I don't do more videos (ok, maybe a better PC would also do the trick but FRAPS is 30€, new machine is more like 1000€) but so far I just didn't find anything better. All other programs compress video too much for my taste, FRAPS is capturing uncompressed video. Tomaz Drnovsek My FSX Videos My AVSIM Gallery
June 12, 201213 yr Author How is the quality and performance in comparison to FRAPS? For me,DXTORY provides better fps.Fraps is too heavy!! Here is a tutorial: DIMITRI
June 12, 201213 yr I don't care about if the video is technically correct or if the sound matches this or that - I simply let my brain analyse it the way it wants to, and to me it's impossible to improve it. Congratulations to whoever did it, it's... perfect! I usually mute the sound on most videos i watch on YouTube, even the song fits this video perfectly, it's a winner. Who am i? June 12, 201213 yr In my opinion it was just some constructive critique so he can make his videos even better. Tomaz Drnovsek My FSX Videos My AVSIM Gallery
June 12, 201213 yr Ah yes, of course! I'm not saying he shouldn't nor that Chock is wrong nor anything, it's just my opinion :) I absolutely loved it :D CASE: Fractal Terra Silver CPU: AMD R5 7800X3D 5.0Ghz RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 GPU: nVidia RTX 4070 Ti SUPER · SSDs: Samsung 990 PRO 2TB M.2 PCIe · PNY XLR8 CS3040 2TB M.2 PCIe · VIDEO: LG-32GK650F QHD 32" 144Hz FREE/G-SYNC · MISC: Thrustmaster TCA Airbus Joystick + Throttle Quadrant · MSFS2024 · Windows 11
June 12, 201213 yr When I did my first FSX video (I made 4 do far) I really didn't pay much attention to these rules (even though I knew most of them) and in the creative process some rules are meant to be broken... sometimes. Yup, that is true, or to use a very hackneyed phrase, 'rules are for the obedience of fools, and the guidance of wise men', which of course means that one should be aware of the best processes before one decides to eschew them for creative reasons. I don't think that is what we were seeing on that video however. Needless to say, I think one can sometimes be 'a bit too poncy and arty-farty' about all that kind of stuff, especially when we are talking about something which is merely banged up onto youtube and done for the fun of doing it, but when we see a video which, based on the 'filmic' title style which is used, clearly has pretensions toward being cinematic in the traditional sense, then it is worth pointing out where it has fallen short of that goal. I wouldn't want to get too high and mighty about it though, and that was certainly not my intent, after all, nobody is born with all that technical knowledge about composition, framing and editing, we learn it, but if one has the desire to emulate good film making, then it certainly should be learned, if for nothing more than the benefits such knowledge confers. Incidentally, if anyone really is interested in learning about that stuff directorial and editorial stuff, this is a really good short book on the subject: http://www.amazon.co...39514854&sr=8-2 Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
June 12, 201213 yr It was an enjoyable video from my layman's view, reminds me to reinstall the Orbx AU regions which I left out of my recent FSX reinstall since I fly NA PNW mostly. Al you are probably cursed with that knowledge which probably makes watching most youtube videos no fun (not to mention a lot of TV shows), I am glad for my ignorance/bliss :Loser: since I love to watch game videos on youtube, I am often amazed with what folks are able to do with FSX+EZDok+FSRecorder, seeing this from a film school pov must be something like finding out there is no Santa Claus and the presents are just a big commercialized shopping season, I wish I could still be ignorant to how that works too :D --John near KPAE
June 12, 201213 yr Yup, you are right, I can tell you that I sometimes sit there watching TV: thinking 'who the f*** directed this garbage?' Instead of just watching the story :LMAO: Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
June 12, 201213 yr I'm guessing from the title that Orbx scenery was used. If that is correct then wow :). Most of that scenery looks better than Flight. I'll be buying some Orbx scenery for sure once they have the locations I want to fly in.
