Best combination of payware to try and "emulate" ORBX scenery for the rest of the United States?

Featured Replies

Here's a couple of shots I made today using GEX, UTX, FEX and Cloud9 X-Class landclass. No, it's not Orbx, but not too bad. Landing at EZF, Fredricksburg VA

I stopped using 3rd party landclass because the Ground Environment plays better with UTX alone.

There is a specific position where the LC has to go in the add-on scenery folder as related to GEX and UTX. Not in front of me right now but I can look it up if interested. I've used 3rd party LC for years without harm or disappointment (other than its not being as good as Orbx).

What we need is an updated landclass product. FSGenisis is from 2007 data and scenery tech's is from early 2008 data.

+1 in some respects. Mesh is still mesh. Other than the odd bit of change due to plate tectonics and landslides etc, the overall planet still looks the same in elevation (can new mesh reflect sea level change due to water level increase??) . Yes, LC could use a bit of a tweak though.

Hmm... Well, this discussion's been a bit of an eye-opener for me. I have GEX and UTX and thought that was the best I could do outside of Orbx regions. UTX in particular was HUGE for me as at least water and roads were where they're supposed to be. But flying over my home territory in Colorado is pretty meh... Mountain ranges are where they're supposed to be and all, but the landclass ranges from OK to just plain wrong, and the Rocky Mountains just ain't that Rocky. I guess I didn't realize that I could layer in another landclass product and move that forward a bit.

Now, which one to try? Dan's screenshots of Cloud9 X-Class look pretty good, but I've also now read that SceneryTech does the SW a bit better, and the areas I'd like to fly more are on the edge - Southern Rockies to the Colorado Plateau and SW (which looks simply hideous with the current stuff). Guess I'll just have to pick one up and experiment.

In any case, thanks for getting me to consider other options.

WFIW, I never much liked S-Tech for anything other than the East Coast USA, too much visible tiles IMHO. However, consider this: LC programming is relatively cheap. Why not buy both, install them and switch off once in a while for a visual change?? I do this a few times a year flying on the East Coast..

Probably will. Bought and installed the Cloud9 stuff today and cautiously pleased, but will probably buy SceneryTech soon. As you say, it's cheap enough that some experimentation is worth doing.

Yes, but a custom landclass calls up default textures, while UTX calls up specific GEX textures designed for it, and it blends better together.

Thanks for the great input guys. Right now I'm thinking I'll go the GEX UTX and Cloud9 Xclass route. Now all we need is some good Midwestern payware airports. :(

I have sent you a PM

Aerosoft has some fairly good products, but they have neither seasons or night lighting and have a fairly substantial FR hit.

UTX does not call specfic GEX textures designed for it (GEX supplies UTX replacement textures). That said UTX supports additional land class types that FSX does not natively have. Because UTX and GEX are designed to complement each other GEX also supplies textures that compliment the additional landclass types UTX adds. Layering as described above sets landclass priority and will allow UTX, GEX, and other Landclass products to work together, including the UTX landclass called textures replaced by GEX.
