June 24, 201213 yr When Flight loads after their latest update, it continuously, (meaning at every loading) asks if you want to update the controls. Naturally I wish to keep my hard earned mapping for my joystick etc. which it took me weeks to do. But every time they ask you to update, so I thought, well, maybe since they are always asking, that it is importanrt and that they have CONSIDERATE programmers that would keep your old assignments... HECK NO Now I gotta re-assign everything? What a nuissance
June 24, 201213 yr When they ask if you would like to update, it's because they've changed some things in the control configuration options. Last patch, for example, was when they implemented non-linear response curves on joysticks. If you don't update, you don't get the benefit of the changes. Your choice.
June 24, 201213 yr Author If you don't update, you don't get the benefit of the changes. Your choice. What I am getting at is that it "always will" ask everytime you start Flight, a bit annoying
June 24, 201213 yr They probably do a simple test to see if the version on your config file is up to date at startup each time. I would expect that file to change fairly regularly over the next couple years. Maybe they will put something in that allows you to say no per actual upgrade. They may fear that they could make a change that would make the option screen crash if you do not implement the config file upgrade. Edit: Consider the nuisance alert a subtle hint to update.
June 24, 201213 yr I think it would have been more logical to simply show a message all the settings are reset because of changes. Giving you an option to keep your setting while in the end you really have no option at all (unless you like to click away that message everytime) is a bit odd and only will confuse and probably annoy people...
June 24, 201213 yr What I am getting at is that it "always will" ask everytime you start Flight, a bit annoying I already updated my controls during the program update, so I cant test my idea ... Change something in your control configuration, save it, then change it back. That should rewrite the controls configuration. Maybe then Flight stops to ask, since the configuration is newer. You might want to backup your control configuration file. Its called standard.xml. On Win XP its found in: c:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Flight\Players\SomeHexadecimalNumbers\Career\Controls\ If you know how to edit XML files (its not rocket science, especially with an editor that understands XML), it might be smarter to backup your old file, then accept the update, then copy your custom settings using an XML editor.

I always edit XML-files with Notepad.... Works like a charm.

It does allow you to not upgrade on that startup and mark down your settings before updating. The annoyance is to get you to do it I would guess.
June 24, 201213 yr I think that if you just allow it to update your controls when it asks, it shouldn't ask you anymore. This is because of the latest update, there are new/modified controls, just like the last patch. If you let it update to the new controls, it shouldn't ask anymore more. I know it's a bit of a pain, but if you keep a backup of your old controls, you can re-input the control data into the new control file. I do this as well, as I manually edit and add controls as I see fit. This last time was a little more of a pain, but you should only have to do this once whenever they patch where there are control changes. UNLESS... you mean that even when you click yes to the new controls, it keeps asking you.

June 25, 201213 yr Hi, Just a couple of things that I didn't see mentioned in this thread. Standard.xml is the output of the Flight configuration software. A new command, such as "Glance" could not be implemented or re-configured, unless Standard.xml was manually edited, without the updated software. I have Standard.xml backed up so I wasn't overly concerned about changing my controls to what I prefer but it seems that I had very few changes to make after the latest update. And I've modified many of the controls from the default. Jim F.
June 25, 201213 yr But how about LISTING all of the (new and otherwise) controls and their options in the controls options screen, a la FSX...so, if I want to keep my joystick sensitivity and dead-zone curve, I can just go into the UI and do it again WITHOUT EDITING XML FILES!!! Duh :) It's not rocket science, MSGS JAKE EYREIt's a small step from the sublime to the ridiculous...Napoleon Bonaparte
June 25, 201213 yr I finally gave in and clicked yes. However, Flight did not lose any of the mappings on my CH Eclipse. Yeah!
