How to use GMap as a popup within Flight full screen

Featured Replies

I think the Navdata is what a must have. It makes GMap a lot more useful.

And I always use the default setting for the map: is that terrain...? Don't even know.

The default is the Google terrain, but it doesn't show the exact height of the terrain as does the sectional. If I hadn't bought the sectionals first, I probably would have just purchased the navadata, cause it gives me 95% of what I need.

I can confirm that I too have the airplane icon always oriented in a NNE direction.

Does not matter if I start Gmap while in the air, disconnect and reconnect, it is always pointed that way - not a big deal, but if there is a fix for it in the future will be nice...

So what do you folks normally display your Gmap in - terrain, roads, satellite , or hybrid? Not sure I see any real difference between hybrid and satellite - at least not that I have yet noticed.

I used terrain, as I like flying through mountain passes. But I broke down and bought the Alaska sectional charts for GMap last night and am now using them.

They make a great supplement for my paper WACs, as WACs don't have as much fine terrain details as sectionals. So, GMap is zoomed in tight showing me a close-up of the local area on a sectional and I'm following along on a WAC to get the big picture.

Where to you buy these charts for GMAP?

From the FSWidgets website. However, if you click the blue globe Chart Data button in GMap, the bottom menu option is "Buy Chart Data" and takes you to the webpage.

Please note that Alaska sectional charts are a separate purchase from the charts for the rest of the US. The airport/navaid data is world-wide, though.

I notice they 'do' two different things,

Which do you recommend is better for GMAP.

I don't have paper maps, though that will come eventually.

I'm trying to upgrade in small bytes, so i don't get in over my head and not understand what's going on.

If you are starting out, I would recommend the Navdata. It is easy to read, and easy to use, and also covers Hawaii. The sectionals are a bit harder to read, and really only necessary for terrain clearance, in the mountains. I have both, and switch back and forth depending on where I am flying, but mostly use the Navdata.

I need to remember to get the world navdata one of these days... When I have the time (rarely) I don't remember. Whenever I'm busy (most frequently) I think about it! :p0126:

Do I need to mention that I really don't like it? Am I alone?

You're not alone. But I am sure they can be disabled if they ever make it through the testing phase.

If you are using a browser with Ad Block, you can right-click the image and select "Block Image." I tested this on one of the Admin's and it worked fine.

You can also set Ad Block to do a blanket-ban on them, I believe, but I didn't test that. Doing so may also affect other images served by AVSIM. If you try it, let us know if it does.
