How to create flightplans in Plan-G and use them in GMap

Featured Replies

I've been using the flight plans from this post on the Steam forums and it's been good for me so far since I'm too lazy to make my own  Not sure if that's exactly what you mean, but it could be useful anyway!

It is really simple to make your own plans using PlanG, and that way you can specify altitude, fuel stops, etc....

I really like Plan G and decided to make a donation to the author for a fine piece of software. They accept Paypal, but it is in British pounds, so I donated about 7 Lbs which is around $11.. Well worth it in my opinion. http://www.tasoftware.co.uk/

Had to have a little grin @ 7 lbs <<< this is a measure of weight, which made me wonder if you gave your donation in the old currency 'Salt' LOL the correct way to write it would be GBP or you can use the '£' symbol.

Thanks for the giggle though and I too donated to the author of Plan-G, as I find it far more user-friendly and much better graphicially than a certain Commercial Flight Planner that I paid over £30 for (which also requires FSX installed for its database).

The fullscreen option is indeed another application you need to install, but it is very easy to use and works very simple. Before you start Flight, you should doubleclick the profile, and then you can fake Full-screen in Flight by pressing Windowsbutton + F11. You don't need to autohide the taskbar (i don't really like that option anyway) because the taskbar will hide itself. It just re-appears when you activate GMap (with CTRL+SHIFT+Z) but hides itself again when activating MS Flight.

Ok, I've now taken Jobs to a couple of airports, to then discover that they are not in the FSX database for Plan G. I saw on the Plan G forum that they are not expecting support for Flight to be implemented any time soon, so we're not going to be able to just build a database from Flight for a while (if ever).

Is there an easy way (heck, or a hard way... I'll learn) to edit the FSX database Plan G uses, so we can fix the deviations? I took a quick look around and didn't find anything obvious.

Ok, it turns out this is easier than I expected... After a tip on the Steam Fourm, I finally started reading the manual for Plan G. You can create User Waypoints designated as Airstrips to augment the FSX-imported database.

Now, we just need to make a list of them as they are discovered. Once we know which ones are missing, somebody (I can do it) needs to add them to a copy of Plan G, which places them in the UserWaypoints.sdf file, then distribute the file. As this file holds user-created content, not information directly harvested from MS's data files, distribution of it should not be problematic.

Jeroen, do you concur? If so, I'll start a topic requesting airports and navaids appearing in Flight but which are not present in Plan G.

I've been playing around with Plan G a little bit, but I'm having a problem where my plane on the map does not point in the same direction as my plane in the game, so on the map it looks like I'm flying sideways... Anyone else had this problem?

I find that if I get into Flight and start my plane moving -- even if just a few mph on a taxiway -- before I start GMap, it avoids that problem.

There's no place like this place, so this must be the place.

Couldn't find an '£' key on my keyboard, but I think folks got the idea. ^_^

Worked in Tech support for awhile. Our most used phrase was RTM......

Huge task, I think, but a great plan! I did know about user waypoints but not that you could designate them as airports! Wonderful! Next problem would be how to add them to the GMap World Nav Data... But it would be great already if Plan-G could be made compatible with Flight! That might also mean you should be able somehow to REMOVE stuff from the FSX database but I don't know if that's possible...

I think removing "historical" items from the FSX-era that are not present in Flight from Plan G is going to require manually editing the FSX-derived database itself, unless Plan G also has a "Delete Object" menu command I haven't found yet. :(

But I'll start a request for difference-data. All I really need is the Flight name and ICAO code. If Airnav doesn't have the rest of the information, I can just grab it directly from Flight. I just need to know where to look.

@RoboRay: thx! I'll check it ASAP!

I will follow you! The application is professional in it's design/conception, even if for game/simulation use. The author deserves it.

The first Flight-specific revision to the Plan-G database is now available. It adds, deletes or corrects 20 airports in Plan-G to match the airports available in MS Flight's Alaska.

You can download the updated database here: http://sdrv.ms/Nv9b6m

Copy it into your Plan-G/Data folder. WARNING: this will replace your existing FSX database file. Make a backup copy of your original file before doing this, in case any problems occur.

If problems do occur, and you didn't make a backup copy, I'll play a tiny violin for you and that's all you're getting from me.

If any download-related problems or usage of the file with Plan G come up, let me know and we'll try to figure it out.

If it does work, start posting more things to have fixed in the thread for the update project!

J van E, You might want to update the link under the MS Flight Tutorials that points to this as it doesnt include the updated links to gmap and the Plan-G database file.

Oh, and for anyone not following the "database update thread"...

Revision 2 of the Plan G database for Flight is now available for download here.

As before, copy it into your Plan-G/Data folder, after making a backup copy of your existing FSX database.

The 63 changes completed to date can be viewed here in Excel format, since AVSIM does not honor table-insertions and turns them into a big blob of text.

Please take note of anything you notice where Flight's Map and Plan-G do not agree. If you post it in that thread, I'll fix it.

Er... you mean the tutorial should have a link to that updated database or the OP of this topic or...? I am not sure what 'this' is...

The sticky that points to your tutorial on the MS Flight Forum is pointing to an older version that doesnt show the link to the database fro plan-g etc

this is the link from the sticky http://forum.avsim.n...e-them-in-gmap/

and this is the current thread http://forum.avsim.net/topic/379059-how-to-create-flightplans-in-plan-g-and-use-them-in-gmap/
