July 13, 201213 yr Unfortunately, yes. I was in the same situation and just uninstalled REX OD to get REX-E without OD (yet). But I saw some posts that people installed both in different folders. So if you roam the REX forums, I'd say there should be some tips on how to achieve that. I don't know how far away REX-E OD is. The devs are on the SP1 fixes and then comes OD. So the other option is to wait a bit longer to be on the safe side. I was gonna ask the same. There's only upgrade 1.2Gb. Will play with HDE, I can't say I'm crazy about REX+ OD textures and clouds. Neither do I even think of switching from AS2012 to REX WX, I just wanted to find some justification to my purchase of REX. Haven't found one yet, unfortunately. Thanks, Dirk. PS: While typing this I'm enjoying HDE sky colors and clouds on the FSX PC, thanks!
July 13, 201213 yr I got mine from FSS, they had a full installer in place. I haven't tried any of the forum options, I just saw the links and descriptions. Seems like you folks are right, only the upgrade can be loaded via the forums. Sorry for the confusion.
July 14, 201213 yr A more detailed information on the WX textures option. My initial statement on 'it's just the clouds' was wrong. We select textures strictly based upon weather conditions. So if you have stormy weather, REX will select clouds / sky / runways/ refraction / lightning / etc that would work best with those conditions. We have examined every texture and have matched them to what would work. Some are selected randomly in the process in that they would work in all scenarios, but others are set to specific limited conditions. http://www.realenvironmentxtreme.com/forums/index.php?/topic/19544-wx-textures-question/
July 14, 201213 yr CoolP, but again, what happens if the SKY THEMES and CLOUD THEMES boxes are disabled in the OPTIONS? Those check (on/off) boxes I surmise are on purpose there, aren't they? My goal is to be able to use wx-influenced texture update "WX TEXTURES" (the green button after loading the FLIGHT PLAN) without disturbing my current SKY and CLOUD textures from HDEv2 package. Thanks, Dirk.
July 14, 201213 yr I think you are assuming correctly. The ticks in the options dialogue set the items being able to be changed. That's how I understand it now. To be more precise. I only had the clouds ticked on and the WX textures feature only changed the clouds, despite the ability to change a lot more than that. And that's with a region change from Europe to the US and later Australia. So the pure nonsense but good testing scenario would be to allow no change at all (all options unticked, or just one left on) and then click WX textures. Should lead to static files. Then go for all options enabled and looking at the files receiving a change with the very same weather.
July 14, 201213 yr I used DXTBmp, a freeware tool found via google. I also saved them with the box on the right side check where it says Mip Maps - "Include when saving". I'm sure you could probably do it with any suitable paint/graphics program, but for simple things like that I typically just use DXTBmp or DDSConverter 2. POST EDIT: Its just the wave animation textures I did and you could also save them in DXT1 if you wanted. If you look at the Essentials UI, you could untick everything and reinstall the Sparking set and tick the box in wave animations to have it install them automatically in DXT1 if you dont want to convert them yourself. These are the files I converted to DXT5. Sean that's one step but I have also resized them too as follows: OceanHeight20FieldLayer.dds 1024 * 1024 OceanHeight20FieldLayer1.dds 512 * 512 OceanHeight20FieldLayer2.dds 512 * 512 OceanHeight20FieldLayer3.dds 512 * 512 OceanHeight20FieldLayer4.dds 512 * 512 OceanHeight20FieldLayer5.dds 128 * 128 OceanHeight20FieldLow.bmp 512 * 512 OceanHeightField 512 * 512 Huge gain in performance around a lot of water even on a high end system :-) André

Which water setting in FSX GUI do you select? Thanks, Dirk.
July 14, 201213 yr awf, sounds good. Which water setting in FSX GUI do you select? Thanks, Dirk. Hello Dirk water settings are low 2x which I find more realistic anyway :-) You will notice especially around Aerosoft EHAM a huge improvement of FPS because of all those little canals and water parts in the Netherlands and around Amsterdam :-) But as always with FSX on you're local system it can be a different story ;-) Cheers, André

Right now I have the ones I mentioned at 1024X1024 but might try cutting them in half. Just converting them from 32bit to DXT made a big difference in performance for me without a visible change in texture quality, but for kicks I might resize and see what type of difference and look it makes. Right now I am running at low 2x as well since I think it looks best and cuts out the cloud reflections which are unrealistic on salt water anyway. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
July 14, 201213 yr awf, while we are at this, did you use the same tool for resizing DXTBmp or DDSConverter? Thanks, Dirk. I use CS and Nvidia DDS dev plugin in CS... Cheers, André
July 15, 201213 yr awf, is "CS and Nvidia DDS dev plugin in CS" something special for this task? Are there any conventional programs I can use to resize those dds? Thanks, Dirk.

Sorry Dirk but CS is Photoshop you can use any graphics program that handle DDS file format. You may sent the files to me and I will do it, takes a few minutes to do ;-) Cheers, André André
