July 11, 201213 yr I guess the cloud 'see through' case is dependant on the textures in use and the placement and density of the actual texture. I'm very happy in that regard with REX-E and I also saw reports that the AS2012 cloud textures enable a more solid impression. Therefore, ASE plus proper textures could help. Worth a shot?

Yea for sure out of interest what no. cloud texture set do you use for REX? I've been trying a few but haven't tested it extensively.
July 11, 201213 yr Don't laugh at me, but I always let REX-E pick the weather related textures, so it will change the clouds every time I start that weather overview screen. This mainly happens when I switch the regions I'm flying to. On those flights in Europe, including some heavy weather within the last days, I was happy with the not see through impression. Surely just a subjective measurement though. Not much help I guess. But I can relate that cloud see through problem and REX-E established an improvement for me. I had REX OD before with ASE or FSRealWx.
July 11, 201213 yr Neither, HDEv2 for sky and clouds, see Ed Cox (edetroit) screen shots. Not a fan of most of the REX clouds sets as they look too hard, sharp and unnatural to me I have to agree with Jim on his assertion concerning the HDE textures. The sky textures, especially, are superb, and looking at Ed's screenshots, certainly confirms this. DIMITRI
July 11, 201213 yr Can't comment on REX since we that have OD version still can upgrade to REXE. Yes, you can upgrade to Essentials if you have REX OD 2.0 You just uninstall everything, and install Essentials. When Essentials OD comes out, you install on top of the existing vanilla Essentials. I see a huge improvement in textures from REX OD 2.0 to REX-E. The Wx engine needs work, and I prefer AS2012 anyway. AJ Pongress
July 11, 201213 yr Well, I will be a bit different and say that I am more than happy with the FSOpen Clouds weather engine and textures provided by FEX. Glenn Ryzen 3700X, X570 Pro Wifi, 32GB 3600mhz RAM, Nvidia Titan Xp "Galactic Empire", RM750x PSU, H700 case, 2x NVMe M2 SSD, 1x SATA SSD
July 11, 201213 yr I don't have any problems using AS2012 with S-turns, pauses, wrong winds aloft, long time to inject weather,.. and other things REXE users are reporting. I think you can count me in on buying AS2012. This sounds like just what I am looking for.
July 11, 201213 yr Looking at HDEV2 it looks that it is for FS9. Would it work with FSX? How about the ground textures (tarmac, runways, etc...)?
July 11, 201213 yr REX-E upgrade for REX-OD is not yet available for those bought at Simmarket? Thanks, Dirk.
July 11, 201213 yr Yes, you can upgrade to Essentials if you have REX OD 2.0 You just uninstall everything, and install Essentials. When Essentials OD comes out, you install on top of the existing vanilla Essentials. I would do that but I bought from SimMarket and can't figure out where to download the full version of Essentials...
July 11, 201213 yr The Simmarket versions may get updated when REX-E OD is ready. Don't ask me why as I don't know the background. But the REX folks stated that it will happen. But you can always go to the REX forums and grab the REX-E update. This will need you to verify your status, which may only take one post and a bit of wait here. http://www.realenvir...ication-thread/ Read this one on the details. http://www.realenvir...r-verification/ Now if you are already verified, the download thread is here. http://www.realenvir...l-upgrade-here/ Just log in to the REX forums and click the link for some more instructions on how to download. For not yet verified members, the link won't work.
July 11, 201213 yr I'm loving Rex Essential. It does have a few issues but the total cloud cover is just amazing. I can put up with a few issues for that. The weather injection is instant for me. The initial loading of weather data when you start the Rex app takes maybe a minute but I just start it up and start plotting my route etc. It's all loaded up way before I'm ready to fly. It takes 2 mins at most to do the initial load and then each injection takes no more than 3 or 4 seconds for me. It pays to read the manual and get your setting right. I wouldn't fly without it.
July 11, 201213 yr With more and more add-ons being available and after 4 years of simming, I am going for simplicity. After all, learning to fly is the main thing, the software is secondary. REX and AS2012 are both fantastic: the former having better textures, the latter having better weather. I initially bought REX but prefer the simpler interface of AS2012. Mario Bergeron
