Black Hole illusion

Featured Replies

Not sure if this is the right forum for it, but this illusion blows my socks off because although it's a static non-moving pic, it appears to be moving!

So if the eyes/brain can be fooled like this by visual input i can't help wondering if some air crashes have been caused by the brain misinterpreting signals from the eyes in certain circumstances?-

It certainly can, believe your instruments!

That's a good one!

Hi!

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but they look pretty static to me but they are still quite interesting. Last week though I was driving in France at night with my parents and we saw all these white strobe lights in the sky in the mist. They were really big and weird and we honestly thought for a while it might have been some sort of alien invasion! Finally when we got close to one I saw the outlines of a tower and it turns out they were a lot of tall radio masts or something. I agree it is very easy to be fooled when it comes to sight.

Many thanks.

Okay, this pic is not photoshopped or anything but the sight would no doubt have puzzled witnesses for a while as they see what appears to be a chopper and an airliner flying left to right together in formation-

The answer is simple: the chopper is transporting an airliner fuselage..:)

To answer the OP's question. Yes there are a number of optical illusions that can affect pilots, especially when flying at nights. Some of the more knowledgeable members might be able to tell you more about them. I'm pretty sure they've been the cause of quite a few crashes. IIRC there's even an effect called the ' Black Hole Illusion'.

I can't stop myself from feeling like I am falling into that black hole, or from seeing the whole page moving in the second picture. The distortions in my vision would certainly be dangerous in certain conditions.

Hi!

Ok I get the second one now. Those circles are definitely rotating slowly. Freaky!

Many thanks.

This one seems to be moving out of the screen towards us, so if a pilot saw something like it in the real world he might mistakenly take evasive action-

None of them move for me.

You're kidding! I wonder why that is. Does anyone know?

Only the second one with the spinning disks is doing anything for me. How curious....

Same here. But the last time I saw a collection of these illusions, and the second one was in there, it included a spiel with data about the percentage of people that would see the illusions move.

They all work for me, try holding CTRL and rolling the mouse wheel to make the pics bigger or smaller.

PS- But I've never, ever been able to see what's hidden inside sterograms like the one below, despite trying for years..:)

This meaningless jumble is supposed to contain that Happy New Year image, but all i see is a hopeless jumble as usual (sniffle)

Afraid after trying can't get any of them to work :( the one full of discs seemed like it was spinning for a moment when I first saw it but has since stayed stubbornly static!
