July 30 Aerocache

I took off from Talkeetna with the aerocache marker turned off. Headed for Mt. McKinley through some IFR conditions. Didn't matter too much as this time instead of the cub, I used the Red Tail. I just didn't want another long drawn out climb in the cub. I've done it twice now. Interesting that the aerocache star didn't show up until I was almost on top of it. I had to circle back to get it. Then I flew back and landed at Talkeetna. Another one enjoyed.

Thanks to all for advice and suggestions.

3:00 AM I got it working right, like it used to. At the highest settings, I made the flight up to the top of Mt. McKinley.

Hoo Rah.

Can you tell us what you did to correct your problem?

Thank you.

Rick

Haha! Guys, I got tired of leaning at 14000 feet and having an airspeed of only 60 kts, so I switched to the Mustang, climbed to 22500 ft. and then switched back to the Cub. You guys should know by now that I'm just a 15-year old gamer!

I live in the Tropics, Larry, and it is hot, although not anywhere near as hot as in most of the US right now. So, I always, all year long, have the side of the computer off and an 8 inch (200 mm. !) fan blowing inside. Still gets a little hot, but as long as nothing starts smoking... By the way, that was 82 degrees GPU Temp, 90% GPU usage, 82% RAM usage on a GTX 460 with 1 GB VRAM.

Best regards.

Luis

Cheater!

:t0105:

 Yes, but it did make for good screenshots. And I do admire your perspicacity and determination, Ray.

Best regards.

Oh, I'm not doing that again! I just wanted to do it myself, for my first trip to the top. And find out if the Cub really could get up there, even if just barely.

Next time, I'll just click my way up there with the Map. <_<

Not normally an Aerocach hunter, but this was a challenge I had to try, and in the cub it was slooow going. After what seemed like an age circling and leaning and just on the verge of stalling, I finally made it. That big yellow flash when you have finally arrived at your goal, really made me smile.

Phew...

...I guess that was what Flight was all about!

Luis: Ok, 82 degrees isn't quite so bad for the GPU. I've seen mine up to 75 a couple of times. Considering my previous CPU's temperature monitor would alarm at 76 degrees, it makes me uncomfortable, but the GPU always runs hotter than the CPU for some reason. My new CPU will throttle back the power if it gets too hot according to the literature. It's hot here in Texas too, but we all have air conditioning. Computer room never gets above 80F.

I flew to the top of McKinley twice, both times from Summit. Once with a light load of fuel, once with a heavier load and 30 gallons left at the summit. Second time was with Clear weather theme because I didn't want to put up with turbulence, or winds. A headwind would make the trip take too long, and a tailwind would have put me at the summit before I had the altitude. I think I was around 19,000 at the halfway point. I didn't use the POI marker, as it was pretty obvious where the aerocache had to be. Besides, I'd already been there once.

Stanfitz: I've heard that "10 minutes and it crashes" before. I don't remember where or what the solution was. I'd be interested in knowing what you might have done to fix it.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

I took the F4U up through the heavy cloud layer to 22,000 feet in IFR conditions and looked for the highest mountian top I could find. What a view at the top of the world. After aquiring the target I changed to the Cub and made some landings and extreme down hill take offs, what fun. The computer did crap out on my run into the target but I was able to resume ok, no other problems.
