July 31, 201213 yr Hi. I'm planning on buying REX and ORBX soon. In addition, I want to get UTX or GEX, but I don't know which one is the better of the two and compatible with REX and ORBX. Could someone explain to me the differences between them and which one you prefer? Thanks.
July 31, 201213 yr Moderator They all do different things and are all compatible with each other. The only thing is when you fly in an Orbx area you wont see the GEX ground textures since Orbx provides their own and you wont see the benefits of UTX since Orbx provides the same type of data for the area. GEX and UTX are great for when your out of an Orbx region/area and REX sky/clouds work everywhere, but the runway and taxiway textures wont be seen if the Orbx or other payware airports you use have their own textures. July 31, 201213 yr I have ORBX + OZx + REX + Accufeel and payware planes. That is pretty much enough for me - not sure what UTX or GEX add to Orbx areas. Also if you are a GA flyer - it'll take you a long time to go through the all the ORBX areas. I have entire AU, NZ and most of NA - and in a year I am still to cover all of them.
July 31, 201213 yr not sure what UTX or GEX add to Orbx areas. Nothing at all, as jimburke posted. If you plan to only fly in Orbx regions (as I also do) you don't need UTX and/or GEX. If you plan to fly anywhere else: UTX gives you (very simply put) real world roads and waters (coasts, rivers) and GEX gives you other ground textures (some like them, some don't). They work perfectly fine together and complement each other! What UTX and GEX do together, Orbx regions do on their own (plus a lot more). Since the OP wants to fly in Orbx regions, I would advice him to NOT buy UTX and GEX and spend the money on the RealAir Lancair Legacy.
July 31, 201213 yr UTX is a must in my opinion if it's between UTX and GEX. I totally agree. Here are both combined (Europe version): Switchboard - Track Your Simulator Add-ons - Throttle Quadrant
July 31, 201213 yr To further complicate things, a good landclass program (Scenery Tech, Cloud9 X-Class) used with UTX & GEX is a good addition to make things look as good as possible in those areas without Orbx scenery. Others use photoreal scenery for those areas too. Dan George (woodhick)Check out Greenbrier Aero Club, the VA for and about the GA pilot.

I have mixed results in this case. Once I managed to find a very small OZx airport in Tasmania by following a road in a real map. However, I tried following a river on the same map (again in Tasmania) and it disappeared pretty quickly even though the map showed it as continuing.

Hm... as far as I know Orbx data should be accurate... but I never checked it.
July 31, 201213 yr Author Thank you all for the input! I think for now I'll settle with REX and ORBX, and save my money for another aircraft. Still haven't picked up the PMDG 737 yet, so I think I'll add that to my list. The RealAir Lancair looks really cool too.
July 31, 201213 yr Hm... as far as I know Orbx data should be accurate... but I never checked it. Yeah I think Orbx data is most probably accurate for the most part. I have seen a lot of ‘rivers’ on Australian maps which in real life are dried up. A good example is Lake George right outside Canberra. It looks beautiful in Rex + Orbx land with the sun shining and lake gleaming – but in reality it’s flat and dry and looks eerily like a flat alien ground in between mountains. Still beautiful though. Can't fault Orbx as they also rely on Government data. Nice Lancair Sig btw!
August 1, 201213 yr Correct Peter - the good rains have put some water back in - but I would expect that to dry again over summer. Even now I think its only 30-35%(?) covered - and even that is not really deep.
