August 3, 201213 yr Well I decided even though the Flight program has been cancelled, I would go ahead and purchase the deluxe version of the Cub. Might as well have all the cockpit versions of planes that were available. Just took a very short hamburger run in it - man that thing floats forever when landing with flaps lol. I am sure I will fly it some more just for kicks, but pretty sure the Maule is safe in the " my favorite plane" category. Btw, I see it has mixture control, I assume no prop rpm control? Don B
August 3, 201213 yr It's got a fixed-pitch prop, so no. Floats forever? Did you have a tail-wind, or just come in fast? I fly the approach at 50mph and try to cross the numbers at 45mph, and never noticed it trying to "float" on me.
August 3, 201213 yr Btw, I see it has mixture control, I assume no prop rpm control? Yep, it's fixed pitch. But for the first time we can easily see the effect of leaning on the tachometer. You lean while RPM increases... Also tested the magnetos, and apparently it works nice although someone mentioned on another thread that left and right were not giving the same decay on RPM (?) August 3, 201213 yr The Cub will float for a long time if you don't have full flaps on landing. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
August 3, 201213 yr Author The Cub will float for a long time if you don't have full flaps on landing. Hook That must be it, I only had two notches of flaps , and probably did come in a little faster than I should. Thanks, Don B
August 3, 201213 yr Have to agree with RoboRay, I have not experienced floating at all when landing full flaps and with the same speeds he mentioned. If anything I tend to bang it a bit hard at times, but the short strips get me concerned. Still getting used to how much distance this thing does NOT need to land! August 3, 201213 yr Full flaps into a good wind, carry a little power all the way in, touch down abour 45, stick back, tap the brakes and it will stop.
August 3, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the tips guys, will have to play around with it some more this weekend. Don B
August 3, 201213 yr Today I flew it again, enjoying each and every bit of it... A few hours before I had been looking at a very nice video recorded with the A2A Cub, over an ORBX gorgeous scenery... Whow, how it looked GREAT! Well, my Cub with a pit in MS FLIGHT made me feel exactly the same way when I hunted the Women's Bay Aerocache today.... And Ianded where the photo shows, using full flaps :-) Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
August 4, 201213 yr Author I guess I should give this one another shot, still only have the 1 short flight in it - went right back to the Maule which I love. Sometimes I tend to resist a little change. Don B
August 6, 201213 yr Fly slowly into a strong enough headwind with the flaps down and you can even go backwards! Great fun. I used this method on a challenge to land the cub and touched down softly right where I was supposed to but got 0 XP because I never skidded sideways! lol
