August 20, 201213 yr Hi all, There is something strange going on with my FSX installation. Everytime I start FSX up come the two messages "Completing setup generating new scenery files" and "Building new scenery database this may take a few minutes". I get these even though I have not made any changes to any scenery. As far as I can tell, there are no symptoms resulting from this but I can't help feeling that it is happening for a reason. Does anyone know why? In a vain attempt to stop it I have made FSX create a new cfg file and also used a utility that is supposed to fix a corrupt scenery file. All to no avail. Any thoughts or suggestions would be gratefully received. Iain Smith
August 20, 201213 yr Hi Iain I had this before and I used my FSX disk and executed the repair function. might be a corrupt file Cliff
August 20, 201213 yr Commercial Member I must admit I had the same issue, until today and for some reason I decided to start with a new FSX.cfg file. Until I saw this thread it never really dawned on me that this was 'not normal'. So, since my new cfg file and this time the only 'tweaks' are from the 'Word Not Allowed' tweak thread, what have I noticed: 1. FSX loads so much faster 2. No more rebuilding of data base on every start. 3. Better graphics and smoother. I've used DXTfixer X, that was any other result also! So, my conclusion is to start with a fresh cfg file and see how it goes. Clive Clive Joy
August 20, 201213 yr Check your scenery .cfg doesn`t have double entries, I`ve had this problem aswell and had two enteries for the same scenery but under different numbers of the area line in the .cfg Regards Doogie My youtube channel for HD FSX Videos http://www.youtube.com/user/Doogiereid?feature=mhee Doogie Reid
August 21, 201213 yr Author So, my conclusion is to start with a fresh cfg file and see how it goes. I had tried that Clive but it made no difference. Thanks for responding. Iain I had this before and I used my FSX disk and executed the repair function. Cliff, thanks for the suggestion. I put disk 1 into my machine and against the repair option it said something to the effect that it would re-install everything it had installed initially. This made me wonder what would happen to my add-ons and would they be overwritten? So I backed out but you can probably tell me - were any of your add-ons altered in any way? Iain Check your scenery .cfg doesn`t have double entries, I`ve had this problem aswell and had two enteries for the same scenery but under different numbers of the area line in the .cfg Regards Doogie Thanks Doogie - I'll check that out. August 21, 201213 yr Author I checked my scenery.cfg file and it ends with a generic entry for add-on scenery. None of my UK2000, FSDreamteam or FlyTampa add-on airports are listed and I was sure that they had to be. I was sure that the last time I looked at a scenery.cfg file it had all the add-on items listed and assigned and area number. Could somone else with add-ons have a look at their scenery.cfg file (C:\Users\Your name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX) and let me know, please. Thanks. Iain
August 21, 201213 yr I have no idea why no-one has suggested this, Iain. Download the SceneryConfig Editor and run it: it will fix your problem. https://dl.dropbox.c...aller-1.1.0.exe i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
August 21, 201213 yr Scenery.cfg does not = FSX.cfg Download what PJ recommended or copy your scenery.cfg in to Excel. A little sorting will show you where the dups/omissions are. I have also had this issue. While I can't remember the solution, it wasn't something as draconian as deleting my scenery.cfg. Also, check the paths to each of you add on scenery entries. You may also want to put that add on scenery folder entry just after your default files. To keep things clean, do not add scenery within FSX. Learn to edit the cfg directly (make backups until you are 100% comfortable). I always make my area numbers = to my layer numbers to keep things nice and simple. If you want to layer something, move the entire section. August 21, 201213 yr Could somone else with add-ons have a look at their scenery.cfg file (C:\Users\Your name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX) and let me know, please. Thanks. Hello The Scenery.cfg that FSX actually uses resides at C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX\ The other Scenery.cfg's are backup copies that is why you are seeing only default entries in the one in C:\Users\Your name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX

Download the SceneryConfig Editor and run it: it will fix your problem. https://dl.dropbox.c...aller-1.1.0.exe Thanks PJ. D/loaded and ran that. It found no problems, nothing needed fixing. So the scenery.cfg file would appear not to be the cause. It may well be as Cliff suggested - a corrupt file that the repair function may well fix. Problem is that this will definitely over-write scenery files such as mesh so my FS Global and FS Genesis files will have to be re-installed and Ultimate Terrain X Europe and Ground Environment X Europe run again. However, on reflection, this might not take too much time. I'll wait and see if any other suggestions come first. Iain
August 22, 201213 yr Which scenery config file location did you select as the target for the repair? i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
August 22, 201213 yr Author Which scenery config file location did you select as the target for the repair? The one in C:\Program Data\Microsoft\FSX. It seemed to be the right one as it had all my add-on scenery entered. Iain
August 22, 201213 yr Hmmmph! I have no other suggestion then, Iain. A new file, or a change in an existing texture or file will force your symptom. You might re-launch the Scenery Editor and uncheck a bunch of your addon sceneries, and then restart FSX. If it stops after you've unchecked one - you've found the culprit. i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
August 22, 201213 yr Hello A corrupt scenery.dat file will also cause this, delete all the FileList.dat files in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX\SceneryIndexes\ They will be rebuilt next time you run FSX
August 28, 201213 yr Author Hi all, I have solved the problem so thanks for all your responses, they all served to increase my knowledge of this programme. In the end I uninstalled Acceleration and ran the repair option. That resulted in FSX not getting past the splash screen and reporting a fatal error due to simprop.dll. After researching on Google, I re-named simprop.dll to simprop.bak ran the repair option again and a new one was created. Then FSX started but still something weird was going on. All airport runways, taxiways and aprons were jet black, entirely without texture. However, I persevered and installed Acceleration and what do you know? All those textures were re-instated. Don't ask me! I'm not even going to think about it. Now, rather than just re-activating my existing scenery files I've decided to take the time to re-install them all, in case one of those files was responsible. Nevertheless, a happy ending to the saga! Iain
