MD11 not following SID

Featured Replies

Like the topic says, my MD11 isn't following the SID I programmed into the FMS. The display clearly shows the track the plane is to follow and yet it turns in the opposite direction. It eventually finds the track and continues to follow the rest of the plan. Any ideas?

On another note, I installed the latest FMS update from Navigraph (AIRAC 1209) and I've noticed that the location of SID's and transitions around Jamaica seem to be changed. Has anyone else had an issue with the update?

Hi,

I would suggest, that you fly the tutorials one or two more times.

As I can see in the attached screenshot, you got some things not right, I want to name some:

1. Your ABS disarmed obviously, I don't know why it did in your chase, but if it does you did something wrong.

2. You are pretty slow, as you aren't in the right AF modes as it seems.

3. You didn't press PROF to engage profile mode (or VNAV as it is called by Boeing). Either, you didn't want to or you forgot it.

4. Have you pressed the "NAV" button on the AF panel?

Best regards,

Jonathan

Hmmm Jonathan is correct. Have a look in You Tube, i uploaded a video of a departure, look for "Pmdg md11 mce" and make sure you follow the steps. Your mcdu must be set correctly, profile and nav armed, autoflight armed when you enter runway and engaged at the right time after takeoff, and the machine flies itself.

The tutorial can be very long and quite boring for someone who knows how to fly. I used this instead http://support.preci...-the-md-11.aspx. It is a quick transition guide to use if you know Boeings. I would also like to see if you have more screenshots with better quality and more of the cockpit. Looking at the one you posted it should turn in the correct direction... The only thing I can think of is the magnetic variables. http://forum.avsim.n...or-fs9-and-fsx/.

HTH,

Manfred

P.S. Looking at the tutorial still doesn't hurt.

P.P.S. Like the guys before me mentioned. You should have prof mode engaged since that is the standard way the plane flies. Since the plane is a very fast one it will brake the 250/10000 rule if it is heavily loaded like yours. The clean speed of your MD11 at that load is around 266 knots. You are flying in an unstable speed at the moment.

Ships are cooler that you think.

I have a suggest for this situation, use heading mode take about 150 degree then increase when close to 150,and engage nav mode during close next waypoint it's should be more than 350 degree.

But if have this situation and not any aircraft around me,i will use direct-to to little far waypoint(because it's get too close),and still use heading first.

I don't think its an issue with the magnetic variable as the -NGX follows the same flight plan with no problem. Somewhere during the initial climb, I'm making a mistake either in where I hit the auto-flight button or maybe when I start retracting flaps. Time to watch more videos.

Now for a weird one. After watching a couple of videos I programmed my FMS and took off making sure to have the pinkenta cross in the middle and hit the auto flight button. I had no issues with that pitch protection message and the plane started to turn to the right on schedule. 1/4 way into the turn it straightened up and proceeded to turn left.

I'm lost here...

Did you hit autoflight twice???? First time arms managed speed mode, so when you move the throttles forward, you hear a "click" and the throttles are managed.

Then once airborne, hit auoflight again and it will manage whatever modes you armed... Ie if you armed profile and nav beforehand, it will manage them for you.

I use a voice control flow for it, so part of the process is to arm nav, profile and fms speed whilst taxying, arm autoflight entering runway and engaging autoflight once airborne.

I hit it twice as you described. The only thing i did after hitting autofly the second time is watch the display and retract flaps as required.

Ok, before departure, after entering route and SID, did you check the MCDU for "dash lines"?? Ie discontinuity??? It seems to me the aircraft flew to a point and then straightened due to command or lack thereof.

After entering sids, scroll your flight plan up and down, make sure there are no discontinuities, and check the cruise altitude is correct.

I deleted all discontinuity entries between the end of the SID and first way point. The problem occurs on the first turn of the SID.

Ok, am stumped!

What route and SID where you flying?

Did you actually overfly the previous waypoint? If not the waypoint will still be listed as next on the FMC and the aircraft will turn to fly back to it.

And do you have pressed PROF and NAV before takeoff? Did the PFD showed that the modes are armed? As in the screenshot you posted it doesn't looks like that you armed PROF.

What route and SID where you flying?

MKJP to KFLL

Route: UNV.UB760.BORDO.B760.ZBV

SID: RW12.SAVEM5 or RW12.RADOK5

STAR: ILS09.WAVUN1.09B

Cruise Level: 320

Outside Air Temp; 29C

Stab: 6.0

Flaps: 22

Something interesting I just noticed and I have no idea if its related or not. I installed the latest Navigraph FMS info last week for PMDG as well as my Eaglesoft CX 2.0. This was installed shortly before I purchased the MD-11. I noticed that my CX 2.0 FMS started putting in arbitrary values in the flight plan that made no sense (Eaglesoft support are investigating) and I also noticed the -NGX wasn't doing the route the same way it was before the update.

I had to re-install FSX today but I haven't done the Navigraph update yet. Just for the hell of it, I put in the same flight plan listed above and funny enough, I had no issues. Could that Navigraph FMS update have errors in the location of waypoints or other data that could cause this problem?

And do you have pressed PROF and NAV before takeoff? Did the PFD showed that the modes are armed? As in the screenshot you posted it doesn't looks like that you armed PROF.

That screen shot showed it wasn't armed because I got a "pitch protection" message shortly before I hit prt-screen.
