October 1, 201213 yr "Thousands?" More like "hundreds," truth be told. There are (and have been) very few exceptions that actually have broken past a thousand sales over time. That's an awful lot of effort for so little return. Hat's off to you guys for the commitment. Anthony O'Brien
October 2, 201213 yr Probably, but the crucial difference is no one sits outside the mall dreaming of being the manager of a Gap store... Human resource managers know that pilots will do anything to fly, and they milk it for all its worth. How else can one explain the whole Pay to Fly phenomena, where people pay relatively large sums of money to work for free. This one won it all I think. +10
October 2, 201213 yr The economic downturn has killed many of the pay-to-fly deals. Plus with the upcoming retirement of 1000s of pilots next year that have made it to 65 years old, there is going to be a huge need for pilots. At our airline we are having a really hard time finding all the pilots we need to fill new positions. We are to the point where we have no reserve pilots on the list. I am hoping in the coming months many pilots are going to be able to regain their pay and ability to live off the income! Chris Miller

October 2, 201213 yr Which airline are you working for? It's not just my airline. Nearly every airline out there is opening the hiring windows in 2013 into the foreseeable future. Chris Miller
October 2, 201213 yr Surgeon a stressful no brainer because want your patient to get better and be happy, and to avoid a lawsuit from malpratice. Stockbroker, I dont know this one the goverments gives them taxpayer cash since 2008 or the Fed does if they screw unlike other business. Pilot, commerical for corporate airline the management will complain how many passengers you are allowing on and fuel used, or why you have to take this approach. If you fly Chicago to Minneapolis each day of the week probadly going stir crazy lolol. Then having to deal with Air-Traffic control snow, cold, FAA, the managment.
October 2, 201213 yr It's not just my airline. Nearly every airline out there is opening the hiring windows in 2013 into the foreseeable future. Indeed, we've been stuck for pilots for almost 3 years now after a poorly thought through voluntary redundency scheme back at the beginning of the recession when management wanted to cut costs, basically, they offered a very very generous package for those who wanted to leave, we lost loads of senior pilots (which is what the management wanted), but it backfired in that the package was so good, many thought they'd go for the package and started applying for jobs in other airlines where they were given high up training positions, so then when lots of senior pilots left and management said "All right folks, we've trimmed all the fat we need, the program is now closed" the more junior people who had already received job offers still decided to leave meaning that they had to offer higher salaries to individual pilots to stop them leaving, leaving massive gaps, which still haven't been filled to this day, though we're in the process of recruiting more cadets at the moment to fill the gaps... Add to that our fleet, load factor, passenger numbers and route map are growing and we're looking at quite the shortage over the next few years too... Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.
October 2, 201213 yr this is happening in many other professions as well with the Baby Boomers now facing retirements. A great time to make a career change if anyone is able to. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
