July 20, 200421 yr Jimmi,I use the VC exclusively when flying the Scout, and I get very fluid graphics on my system with all the sliders maxed out... P4, 2.8 GHz, ATI 9800 ProKen
July 21, 200421 yr I can get 100 FPS but the gauges in the VC are at a much lower refreshrate. I really don't think it matters what kind of system you have and what framerate you get - the gauge refreshrate appears to be fixed at maybe 5 FPS where as they are completely smooth with e.g. the Aerosoft Katana. Here's a video showing the animation of the gauge. The quality is poor because I filmed the LCD monitor :) It does however show the lack of smoothness of the attitude indicator and other gauges. As you can see, the terrain moves smoothly in the turns but the gauges do not making flying from the VC rather dificult.http://home.swipnet.se/~w-84952/Jimmi/Movie/vc.wmv (WMV9, 1MB). -
July 21, 200421 yr I would have to agree...I have seen the VC and it's very nice no question about it, it's just not smooth enough for any kind of precision flying. Like you said it's not a question of how many FPS you get it's the way the xml gauges is programmed, or maybe it's an fs9 limitation. Currently not a lot of planes have mastered the art of smooth VC cockpits but I'm sure it will get better.-Mikkel
July 21, 200421 yr As you can see, the terrain moves smoothly in>the turns but the gauges do not making flying from the VC>rather dificult.Regardless of the VC intstrument refresh rate, if I was flying erratic, as in the video, I would hope that it's from looking out the window, rather than intruments. And the VC works rather well for that type of purpose.Bouncing airplanes don't make precision instrument platforms! :)L.Adamson
July 21, 200421 yr "Regardless of the VC intstrument refresh rate, if I was flying erratic, as in the video, I would hope that it's from looking out the window,"I don't normally fly like that :-lol it's just that it's easier to see the gauge animations when they move a lot. This is a VFR aircraft of course so gauge smoothness is not crucial. Still, Aerosoft and Dreamfleet/Flight1 have mastered gauge animations and Carenado are getting better which leaves RealAir a bit behind -
July 22, 200421 yr Author "it's just not smooth enough for any kind of precision flying"I always thought that precision flying, especially in this kind of aircraft, was keeping your eyes on the horizon, looking around you for traffic, getting the feel of the aeroplane and being able to fly by balance, sight, touch and general awareness. That was what the Scout was designed for. The instruments are there for a REFERENCE as to the current state of flight, not there for the eyes to be glued on watching their update rate!!!Rob Young Robert Young - retired full time developer - see my Nexus Mod Page and my GitHub Mod page

And thats how it is with simulated airplanes; they all have their specialties...L.Adamson
July 22, 200421 yr I have not tried the Scout yet myself. Though there are airplanes where you have to relay on instruments, but with Scout you definately have to keep your eyes to the windows. Instruments are really only for checking example the altitude or airspeed. Scount is not such plane that you take to the clouds and then try to do IFR. Ofcourse good FPS on VC gauges is always better. Let's just hope that the framerates increase in future :)
July 22, 200421 yr I find framerates in the VC view on the RealAir Scout to be about 5-6fps less than in 2D view. This is not a problem on my system. If I am flying with everything maxed out (including GA Traffic and Ultimate Traffic) then I normally use the 2D view for approach and landing as framerates are slightly smoother and it's easier to switch immediately back and forth between "ahead" and "left" views (on the POV hat) to check height for the flare and three-pointer.Other than that the VC view is great for all other VFR flying. If you're watching the instruments all the time you shouldn't be in the air in the first place (unless you're flying an IFR flightplan and the Scout isn't cleared for IFR)RegardsAdamAdam Moorewww.hhuk.netWin XP Pro - Dell Dimension 4500P4 2.54 GHz - 1GB RAMHiTech Radeon 128MB 9800Pro IceQ19" CRT 1600x1200 @ 100hzAudiophile 24/96FS2004 + UK2000 1/2/3/4/5/6/EGLL PROUK VFR Photographic Scenery 1/2/3/4UK VFR Terrain MeshUltimate VFR : RealAir SF-260Ultimate IFR : PMDG 737Ultimate FUN : RealAir Scout

July 23, 200421 yr What a weak argument. So you are saying that it's okay for the VC gauges to be that erratic because they don't really matter anyway. I say that at some level it takes away from the "real" aspect of the simulation...having erratic gauges like that is not "real". I realise it's though to do smooth gauges, maybe even not possible in fs9, but I think that in order for it to feel like you are flying all aspects of the simulation must be as close to reality as possible...like having smooth gauges.-Mikkel
July 23, 200421 yr I don't have any problem with the guage smoothness at all. They don't seem much different from the guages in most of the VC's of most of the planes I have. Some are a bit better, some are worse. In any event, the VC of the scout is really really nice. If the guages aren't quite smooth enough for whatever "precision flying" you are trying to do, switch to the included and very nice 2D panel...I just fail to see the problem here...
January 27, 200521 yr As documented in another post, you can dramatically improve the VC gauge refresh rate in the Scout by blanking out all but the first three VC window definitions in the panel.cfg file...Since there are many paints and panels to match, just pick one and try it! Bert
