October 15, 201213 yr NO-ZERO stutters Ok, then it looks like it is worth investing in an SSD, what do you think of this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227812 Also, I want to ask if going to a GTX 550 Ti can smooth things out on FSX as well?
October 15, 201213 yr You mean that the regulary sold SSD are equal in quality and realiabilty ? No, I mean high-end enterprise class SSDs are higher quality and more reliable than consumer/desktop SSD. I'm going for probably a 256Gb SSD for my OS/FSX, or maybe even 512. Have to look and see what my FSX has grown to. Also, I may abandon FSX and go for P3D when I do my build next year. October 15, 201213 yr An SSD will last usually about 3000-5000 write cycles before it starts to die. That means you would have to write nearly 600 terabytes of data to a 128GB SSD before any damage occurs..... I can easily do 5000 write cycles in a day
October 15, 201213 yr Very detailed reviews here : http://hexus.net/tech/cat/storage/type/reviews/ Quite a bit of chat hear about reliability and improvements in it. My last box came with the OS (Win7 64bit - home premium) on a small SSD, which is now filling up despite regular use of C Cleaner and a 1Tb conventional HDD. I think my next move will be to buy a bigger SSD to ghost the original onto. Whatever you install to the installers seem to add something to the OS on the C drive?! Once that's up and running I'd reformat the original for use with some train sim routes I have. When I can afford it buy a second bigger SSD for the working version of FSX only. Conventional HDD's are relatively cheap so if I run out of space on my existing one I'd buy another HDD for extra storage. At the moment my FSX is on the same HDD as everything else and if I had it on a seperate SSD I could back it up to the HDD in case the SSD died. Back-up! The thing everyone knows about but only a few ever do . Geoff's law ^_^ of Hard Disks states that "however over the top you think the disc size is, it will be nowhere near big enough". When I got my new rig last year, I went for a 64Gb SSD for the OS, which is fine, but the FSX drive is 250gb and already I'm thinking of changing it as I'm up to about 210gb! Although in practice I think I'll simply delete some of the addons that don't get used very often. So it's a 512Gb Sata III SSD for me next time--then I can use a nice cheap HDD to clone it on and back off of in the event she crashes. October 15, 201213 yr Can't see much point in putting the OS & FSX on separates SDDs. It is typically cheaper... Also, people that already have an HDD as their main drive can retrofit their system with an SSD and follow my guide to move FSX over to that new drive.

Also, people that already have an HDD as their main drive can retrofit their system with an SSD and follow my guide to move FSX over to that new drive. OK, then I retain the same position--it's best to use one drive for the reasons stated. Retro is another issue as I'm not doing this as a retro.
