October 21, 201213 yr If they manage to make good and fast devices running W8, so basically laptop AND tablet in one, then they might have something. Only something, because they are trying to get back in the big league, vs. Apple. And this is going to be a big fight, let me tell ya that.
October 21, 201213 yr well, you said it - tablet and laptop in a tablet package. they can't lose this one
October 21, 201213 yr Everyone watch this video: It pretty much shows how real people will use Windows 8. I'm not talking about obnoxious teens that want whatever comes out. I'm talking about long time Windows users like Chris' dad in the video and how they will adapt to the new OS. Also, take a look at this: Edited October 21, 201213 yr by linux731 i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4-2400 MHz, GTX 1070 8GB
October 21, 201213 yr Nono... not tablet and laptop in tablet package. Tablet desguised as laptop or vise versa. Basically need a laptop "power" inside of a tablet, and then a device that is easily useable as a laptop. Let's say a detachable screen with a complete hardware. The hardware should be doable with flash drives, good intel CPUs, etc. Need a push in the GPU department... only questionable part is cooling and possible speed with passively cooled devices.
October 21, 201213 yr emm, for example take the MS surface, the higher model - Ivy bridge i5, USB3, SSD, etc. - what more could you need in a laptop for normal work (excluding serious 3D)? For moderate 3D, you even have built in video. You can couple it to a bigger stationary screen at home with a real keyboard/mouse... I'm totally happy with that for my work on the go. A freaking IB i5? Bring it on! My desktop is still in 2008 with an E8400 dual-core and I'm still more than happy with it Heck, I'm even doing real flight events on IVAO with heavy sceneries and lots of traffic around me.

Serious 3D work? Try simple 3D games... kids wanna play, you think the Surface can handle it?
October 21, 201213 yr I hope this post will be viewed as relevant to this thread and I can get my point across without flame wars starting. I have actually been a member of this forum since 2001 (my icon shows 2008 due to an absence from the forum and I started a new membership). Ok, long time flight simmer and I used to chase the latest technology and I wouldn’t ever want to admit how much I’ve spent during that time. I bought a new computer as every new MSFS was released in order to enjoy the features the new software offered. I know tech changes and causes new things to replace old and in many ways that’s a great thing, but what I am having somewhat of a problem with is when Operating Systems cause perfectly good working hardware that’s still being sold to become obsolete. Although dated which I admit, I now have 2 laptops that operate just fine using XP Pro, and when I saw the message yesterday that this forum would no longer support IE8, I thought ok time to up-date to IE9. Whoops, can’t do that…need W7 which my laptop mfg. does not offer some drivers for that will work with either laptop using W7. I know XP is being discontinued by MS…but are we/I being traded for “just go out and spend a grand for a new laptop system” verses I used intelligence when selecting my laptops so that I could expand for some reasonable length of time? How old is FSX J I too have my boxes of AT hardrives, and other gear that become obsolete and can’t even give a way. I use computers every day in my business that I own and they use W7 as the OP system. I also own a Toshiba Android tablet…just so it doesn’t seem that I’m being to dinosauric about thisJ
October 21, 201213 yr surface is too far away from kid's product. at least in my opinion. i would buy a xbox or nintendo to my kid, not a surface. for simple 3d games can't you use the built-in graphics in the i5?
October 21, 201213 yr surface is too far away from kid's product. at least in my opinion. i would buy a xbox to my kid, not a surface. for simple 3d games can't you use the built-in graphics in the i5? We are talking about replacing W7, not running side by side. No, you can't yet replace the built in GPU, and the heat generated, well... impossible. This is exactly my point... laptops as they are now are still too powerful to be replaced by tablets only. And also what Hooper said, I like that point too. Making obsolete just for the sake of the development, that is not the problem, the tempo is the problem. And MS is giving it.
October 21, 201213 yr I've been using Windows 8 Professional on my PC for the past week (got it for free through DreamSpark, previously known as the Microsoft Academic Alliance). As far as I can tell from the limited use I've had so far, there doesn't seem to be any compatibility issues with FSX. No features are broken, there are no new bugs or issues introduced through running it on the new OS. However, there also doesn't appear to be any performance gain. It simply runs exactly as it did in Windows 7. I strongly believe any performance gain noticed is simply a 'placebo effect' and caused instead just by the fact it's a fresh install. So my 2 cents are; if you're upgrading to Windows 8 anyway but worried about compatibility issues, do it - it won't break anything as far as FSX is concerned. If you're upgrading just because you think it'll give you a few extra FPS, don't - it won't, you're better off staying with Windows 7 and just reinstalling FSX. I think I'm in the minority that quite like Windows 8, and I'm running it on a desktop with a big, non-touch monitor. I don't find the new Start screen invasive at all, it's actually quite attractive, and you simply have to press the Windows key on the keyboard and it's gone, replaced with the all-to-familiar desktop environment from Win 7, minus the Start button. Some of the bundled applications are actually very good, particularly the Mail app, which happily synced to my Work and College Exchange accounts as well as my Apple iCloud account, something which was an absolute pain in the rear-end in the Windows 7 equivalent (albeit not bundled), Live Mail. October 21, 201213 yr Thanks Word Not Allowed, I'm glad my points were understood. Hooper I share that opinion too. Making obsolete just for the sake of the development, that is not the problem, the tempo is the problem. And MS is giving it. You got me wrong. I hate that too and I am in no way 'defending' or anything W8 when W7 is what we have always wanted. But you perfectly know that software and hardware developments have to go hand by hand. They just move with matching speeds. If they don't, one of them will always suffer.
October 21, 201213 yr 3. Bashing it on the grounds that FSX may or may not work better with it is even more irrelevant. Win8 is not in the FSX system requirements. 4. Bashing it on whatever grounds before it is even released... you know Re: 4 - Did you read the posts above? Some competent and experienced people have given us their take on the RTM version of Win8. Obviously after they have used it. You might thing that this is irrelevant, but I for one don't. and finally Re: 3 - This thread is titled FSX and Windows 8! So if someone says that this or that worked better/worse under the latest version of the only OS that is capable of running FSX I'd say it's relevant. operate just fine using XP Pro, and when I saw the message yesterday that this forum would no longer support IE8, I thought ok time to up-date to IE9. Whoops, can’t do that…need W7 Maybe getting a copy of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera will solve your problem. I do get your point though, it is very frustrating when you are beginning to hit the end-of-the-line obstacles that software sometimes imposes on perfectly good hardware. Cheers, Alex
October 21, 201213 yr Maybe getting a copy of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera will solve your problem. I do get your point though, it is very frustrating when you are beginning to hit the end-of-the-line obstacles that software sometimes imposes on perfectly good hardware. What if Microsoft was lazy to develop Internet Explorer 9 for Windows XP? I mean, without Aero, I think it would look pretty ugly with Windows XP's scheme. However, Windows XP is still the world's most popular OS and it is also the most compatible. (Excluding Windows XP 64bit) i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4-2400 MHz, GTX 1070 8GB

You might thing that this is irrelevant, but I for one don't. Maybe it's the heat down there in Sydney or just manners. But thanks for kindly implying I'm the opposite to competent and experienced. Well worded, hope your day is better now. And yes, I've read them all. Have you? Only two people reported RTM, and two other actually reported how FSX is behaving under W8. The rest is personal opinions leaning to "W8 is no good because (insert random rant here)". You are free to find relevant whatever you want. and finally Re: 3 - This thread is titled FSX and Windows 8! So if someone says that this or that worked better/worse under the latest version of the only OS that is capable of running FSX I'd say it's relevant. So kudos to Mike T and level_7.
