November 18, 201213 yr Am I frustrated? Efter update from XP (which was running FSX rather well on my not so hot system) I had a fast, nicelooking OS where all my apps and programs from XP including FSX were reinstalled and ran well. Then an AMD-update of the inboard sound drivers caused Win8 to chrash. So I did a clean reinstall of Win8, and all the other programs and apps from the WinXP days. Success for everything but: BUT FSX De Luxe will not install. It halts at the very end after fonts have been registered and during the registering of modules. The error message says that the install package doesn't work because a program in it did not end like it was expected to. Then I have to accept two error messages and see the install roll back. I have made two clean installs of Win8 and another "keep files" install, and four clean installs av FSX. No change. CHKDSK of the install discs report no errors. Is there anybody who can explain this and suggest a solution? Tommy Tommy Engman

November 18, 201213 yr Next time ask here first before you run and get the latest 'hot' OS. And what if so? That the Win8 Users would tell him, that there's no problem with FSX and Win8, as it is indeed!? Do you really think that such a suggestion would make sense? Unfortunately I can't give any suggestion despite the tip that it works of course here as it does with many others, too. Be sure to disable all security settings during install and install as admin. And also check your DVD for any scratches, that was a reason for an installation abort few years ago on my system (with Win7!) November 18, 201213 yr Be sure to disable all security settings during install and install as admin. That's right. I should also reinstalll your old inboard sound drivers again, the latest ones are probably not (yet) compatible with windows 8. And i read somewhere that you can't disable UAC anymore in Windows 8, so i think its important just like in Windows 7 not to install FSX into the default directory which is c:\ProgramFiles(x86) but in a custum directory like c:\FSX With kind regards, Bart S.
November 18, 201213 yr And i read somewhere that you can't disable UAC anymore in Windows 8 of course you can. Same way like WIN7 ... as anything else is the same like Win7 ^_^ Guenter Steiner -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Betatester for: A2A, LORBY, FSR-Pillow Tester --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
November 18, 201213 yr of course you can. Same way like WIN7 ... as anything else is the same like Win7 O right, that's good news then. With kind regards, Bart S.
November 18, 201213 yr Author Thanks for taking the time. Although there are reports of success with Win8 and FSX. I only found one other with the same problem (install error) on Win7, but that person reinstalled Win7 and is apparently happy ever since. Reinstalling Win8 does not do the trick. I have installed FSX in a library under C:. I have succeded in installing FSX demo version - and flown. But the idea of old sound drivers is one that I haven't tried sofar. If it doesn't work I'll go back to XP for 506 days. Thanks again! Tommy Engman
November 18, 201213 yr I do not think, if the Demo runs, that you need old sound drivers. Have you checked for scratches on the DVDs? A workaround here would be to make ISO's of both the DVDs and then install out of that ISOs If making an ISO already fails, then you could be sure, the DVDs have an issue. November 18, 201213 yr I have succeded in installing FSX demo version I'm not sure what you mean by this. Did you uninstall the FSX demo completely before installing FSX? If not, this is your problem. The demo must be completely moved. Then, you need to remove anything left over in the file system, then you need to run a registry cleaner like CCleaner. Once completed, then install FSX. Best regards, Jim Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! November 19, 201213 yr Author Thanks for your concern! I do not think, if the Demo runs, that you need old sound drivers. Have you checked for scratches on the DVDs? A workaround here would be to make ISO's of both the DVDs and then install out of that ISOs If making an ISO already fails, then you could be sure, the DVDs have an issue. I have chkdsk'ed the DVD no2 - no errors. I have copied the two DVD:s to the harddisk and run the installer from there. Same result at the same place in the installation. I have hidden the InstallShield exe of the install disc just in case this was an issue. No change. I'm not sure what you mean by this. Did you uninstall the FSX demo completely before installing FSX? If not, this is your problem. The demo must be completely moved. Then, you need to remove anything left over in the file system, then you need to run a registry cleaner like CCleaner. Once completed, then install FSX. Best regards, Jim After I have failed to install by now fifteen times I tried the demo to see if there was a general issue with Win8. Well, not an evident issue anyway since it installed and also flew. Then I tried to copy files from a file backup on another drive into the demo install, and tried to install the SP1. It was not accepted - I needed the real complete FSX to do that. So I uninstalled the demo. And ran the original FSX De Luxe install again: Install error with interruption in the middle of font registering in the later trial installs. Earlier the interruption occurred after registering fonts in the next instance, registering modules. I look for an explanation to this message: "Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as a part of the setup did not finish as expected." Thank you so much for your efforts and willingness to help! November 19, 201213 yr You need to disable UAC via the registry hack. Disabling UAC via the control panel will not work because the Program Files directory are still in 'intermediate' protection because of metro apps. If you disable UAC via the registry your programs can write to Program Files. I had this issue with REX and changing textures. Soarbywire - Avionics Engineering
November 19, 201213 yr Hi Tommy Have you tried to install FSX on another disk and not in "Program Files" ? If you have only one harddisk, try C:\FSX\ folder in installation requester. Another thing is that, apparently, you have upgraded from XP, but XP 32 or 64 bits ? If it's from XP 32, you have a W8 32 bits version, which is far from good for FSX (FSX is, for a long time, working better on 64 bits system). Hope this helps Pierre Pierre LFBE
November 20, 201213 yr Author Thanks for answers. I don't understand what "disabling the UAC via the registry hack" means, but to me it seems to be something else that doesn't work. Like Pierres suggestion about 32 or 62 bits systems, well why would XP 32 bits run it? Why does Win8 32 bits run it in Demo version? And it's not like the program chrashes when running it - it's the installer that doesn't work. So which part of the installer program does not end like it should? I have since my last post installed FS9 again. And it runs. Sad but true. Or "Great and true!" ? Thanks again. Tommy Engman

November 20, 201213 yr Author That was an interesting site! Tried the UAC tweak - copying the text and making a .reg file which went well - but the install ended at the same place. What annoys me is that there are people who have succeded with their installs, and they presumably have not disengaged anything than maybe adm rights. I wish for a MS representative to engage in this. Thanks for your suggestion! Tommy Engman
