Think FSX would be good on this display?

Featured Replies

Anyone ever used a display like this for flight simming?

Kind of in the same territory as multi-monitor setups but without bezels and more than one screen to worry about??

I can imagine it would be useful when using VC's, a bit more display real estate to render more of the VC

That picture is deceptive... It is smaller than the U3011 with less vertical resolution. The U3011 is 2560x1600 on a 30 inch diagonal the monitor you referenced is 2560x1080 on a 29 inch diagonal. So it just looks wider because the U3011 is larger vertically. For $700 vs $1200 it is a pretty darn good deal though!

If you have the money the U3011 is the winner IMHO, 2560x1600 on a 30 is stunning and going from 1080 to 1600 in most cases means less panning as you don't have to look down to see your gauges anymore ;).

I have both the Dell U2711 and U3011. I find them too small for flightsim.

I bought a 40" LCD TV for flight simming instead. It makes the VC come alive and makes it closer to a real life cockpit. Also on this TV I can tune the colours and contrast to suit FSX and P3D perfectly with no need to switch back for other work that I use the Dell monitors for.

I could never go back to a small monitor after using the LCD TV. It even cost half of what the Dell monitors do!

Well, as been said, the Dell 30" 2560x1600 is simply awesome and of course what you get is the vertical real estate that is so absent with the extra widescreen at 2560x1080. It sounds good, but if you think about things, what happens in the VC? You'll lose most of the instruments!

Agree with Howard and the reason I downsized is bigger is not always better. What good is a bigger display if you actually see less? I could not see ever going back to 1920x1080 after 2560x1600...

Realestate doesn't really matter if the gauges are too small to read, or the immersion factor is suffering. I had to pull the 30" almost to my nose to use it, but I like to fly at a zoom level of 30-40. It gives a better sensation of speed. A zoom level of 50-60 feels too slow when you're cutting tree tops. To me 40" is minimum to get a feeling of being in the cockpit. But people are different. If I had to choose betwwen the Dell ultrawide 29" and the older normal wide 30", the 30" would win.

If only we could get a 42 inch TV with Plasma blacks and contrast levels in 2560x1600 resolution for under the price of a car!!!

Be careful what you wish for. They're coming sooner than you think. 4K TVs are right around the corner (4096×2160 resolution!!!). Imagine that resolution and a 50" TV. Almost like sitting in a real cockpit!

Hopefully we'll have another toy to play with than FSX, because I can't imagine it being able to run at such a resolution for long before going OOM. :)

If you have a spare $5500 you can get in line for the Sharp PN-K321 32" @ 3840x2160.

I often wonder why it's possible to get a computer monitor running at 2560x1600 but then manufacturers produce 50" TV's running at the same resolution as a 24" LCD and have the audacity to call it HiDef!

Thats not audacity, thats just fact... 2560 x 1600 is more than high def :-)

In my books, Hi Def is just a markeitng ploy. It's not so much about the monitor, but more about the quality of the original material and what equipment it was captured with. If something has been shot on VHS and then broadcast on a HiDef TV, is it HiDef? of course it's not. Who determines something is called HiDef? And what does it actually mean? It reminds me of the term designer label... that's another marketing ploy that everyone has used to death. Stick a label on a garment, call it a designer brand and all of a sudden, for some reason, it's doubled in price!
