Strange Cloud Anomoly

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I think the attached pic should be self explanatory, showing a strange grid like pattern... again, flying with Opus RW... can someone offer any help, cheers...

can't help you here sorry, but you're not alone, i have the exact same visuals than those depicted in your screenshots at times

i did a bit a reaseach and it looks like it may be caused by the cloud textures we are using that dont 'blend' well when used for overcast conditions, so i have scheduled to test some other cloud textures this weekend to see if it fixes this problems, maybe you should do the same

hopefully opus people will probably be able to confirm if its only a texture issue or if it's some other parameteres interfering with the weather engine

Hmmmph... I am beginning to get frustrated with Opus... i started off being 'over the moon' with the real weather engine, but for some reason it generates certain clouds which look like default textures. Now this crazy grid affair.. I hope it can be sorted.... I'll wait to hear back from you and your tests...

Actually, I don't think Opus has any control whatsoever over which cloud textures are actually used. It only tells FSX where clouds should exist... FSX's own weather engine is responsible for selecting the textures, generating the actual cloud graphics, and placing them into the scenery.

All of the basic graphic elements that FSX uses to create clouds are located in the "textures" folder under your main FSX folder. Depending on whether you have ever used an add-on texture package, you may have all default cloud textures, all replacement textures, or a mixture of both.

I have seen user reports of getting that kind of "gridded" overcast with virtually all of the various add-on weather engines. It happened to me on a couple of occasions when using default FSX cloud textures. I have since switched to using FEX for my cloud, sky and water textures, and have not seen this problem since.

Howard, I had this problem using Rex textures in AS2012. I have gone back to using FEX, and I do not see this tiling anymore. As Jim said, it is not an Opus issue.

This is absolutely nothing to do with OpusFSX, the grid pattern is purely down to the textures and the tiling of them, all rendered within FSX !

No weather engine can control this but some textures are better than others. You should also be aware that no engine can actually place the clouds or tell FSX what bitmaps to use to render them, also the clouds you see are determined by the current meteorological conditions (the METARs), if these report low lying few cumulus then you get just that. Why dont you try changing your cloud textures to give you something more realistic, try the dense natural FEX textures for example. These textures are more transparent at the edges and hence give a very realistic appearance.

I do think it is a little harsh by you though, to put all the blame on the weather engine. You chose the cloud textures and installed them, FSX selects, positions and renders them, all we do is define the detailed weather map. I understand you would like to attribute blame to some cause, rather than your choice of textures or FSXs inability to render them to your satisfaction ... but please, give us a break.

In my defence Stephen, I haven't experienced this kind of grid pattern before, only since installing Opus. But I take on board your reply. It was not my intention to attribute blame, but I guess on reading my post that's what it naturally looks like. I guess I'm just frustrated... from the REX forum the reply to this issue is... Howard, this has nothing to do with textures... it's been discussed in-depth before. This is how regions are filled in with weather So from where I sit, in the middle, on one hand I'm told it's not the textures and on the other I'm told it's not the real weather. I'm certainly not going to purchase another weather program just to get some textures. So is there something else I can do?

Hi Howard

No problem, the tiling effect is a standard FSX phenomenon though, but it is only seen if you have a thick overcast or broken cloud formation extending over a considerable area (that's why you have probably just noticed them with the Opus LWE). We do a number of things to minimise this effect but it is really down to the textures and the tiling of them by FSX. Just imaging a number of cloud bitmaps tiled next to each other to fill an area, that's when you get the tiling pattern.

You should give FEX a try though, its via Flight1 so you have the 30-day money back guarantee. I love the natural dense clouds. The small cumulus are better as well, but from FL300 of course they are all going to look like very small cumulus when the coverage is few. It is quite realistic though.

I know it can be frustrating at times, but FSX is certainly not a multi-million pound simulator program, its a very buggy program that requires so much effort to get it to provide anything resembling RW conditions without falling apart at the seams.

Merry Xmas and a happy new year.

Regards

Stephen

P.S. I am not at my computer right now, enjoyed a couple of really nice flights in the PMDG this morning though, just for pleasure, no testing or work. Anyway, I think I am using the Soft Dense Natural cloud textures. Others are very impressed with Nick's Dense Naturals which I am going to try out soon.

Beta 2.70.3 is pretty good and was nearly posted as a release but we have a few more ideas to try out in the beta dev cycle yet. The beta does introduce a new Lower Atmosphere report along with low level wind targets from the ground up. It may help some user's systems maintain the required wind targets and of course stay on track to give the true surface wind target as you descend on to the approach (remember to spec your destination though). Have a great holiday break everyone.

Just to confirm, I have had this grid effect too using REX and HDEV2FSX. Got a lot more grid effect when the area was at max in FSX,

taking it one notch down seemed to decrease this grid effect.

Let me take this opportunity also to wish everyone in this Forum a Merry Xmas and a very prosperous 2013. And congratulations to

Stephen & spouse for such a great support, even though I haven't needed any for quite a while. :clapping:

Merry Christmas Howard, don't forget to try out those FEX textures.

Stephen

I too have just seen this depiction and I too have A2012 that I loaded but guess what, A2012 did not connect to FSX because of an .net crash, so rebooted my networked A2012 machine and started A2012 again and the depiction disappeared.

Obviously an fsx and NOT a A2012 problem

I have exactly the same problem using AS 2012 textures. I'm not keen on buying another $45 add-on [REX], having bought Opus on top of AS.

What we're saying is that short of that, there's no answer?

I have to say, I fail to see how changing a texture package can affect the way those textures are displayed...
