WoAI Shutting Down 30 April 2013!

Featured Replies

Just because an AI group decides to pack it in doesn't mean the sim is dead, for goodness sake!

Nobody thinks so, but it is still sad to see such a great freeware addon cave in since good freeware is few and far between.

WOAI didn't ever make the jump to fsx, so their relevance has steadily declined

Wasn't aware i was living under a rock, so thanks for letting me know.

So your world of AI comes with FSX native AI models, does it? How are they working for you in Direct X 10 preview? Oh...not so well I guess...

I know you can use the WOAI FS9-based models in FSX - hence my question about whether it was worth downloading the package to use with UT2 etc.

I use MyTrafficX with DX10 preview and so far have not seen any problems with AI textures. If you do have FS9 textured aircraft, it can usually be fixed by installing the Addon_Converter_X program. It converts incompatible textures on the fly. It has a demo mode to test it but it can be bought at a reasonable price.

Ok, good tip. I've recently converted to mytraffic x, and am pretty happy so far with the range of liveries. But I think the woai files might be useful to have on hand in case I do want to add something later.

Well, you can if you take the time to convert the FS9 format flightplans to FSX format...

...so that you don't kill all of the FSX format flightplans your other AI addons use.

This (among other reasons) is why many people involved in software argue for things like Copyleft.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyleft

So something like Linux can never be "taken away." I don't always agree with all of the arguments made for it, but it is definitely an interesting thing to consider.

Time to enter the ring *ding* *ding* :-D

Seriously though, its amazing how many of you sat here complaining all week about the WOAI decision to EVENTUALLY pull their packages from avsim and flightsim. Could've used that time to download all of their packages tsk tsk.

I cant really say I'm surprised by their decision to close shop. I've been a user of all of their work since 2008 and eagerly waited each month for the next batch of 4 airlines to be covered....those were good times. The last 2 years though showed a great reduction in output to the point where i was beginning to notice a lack of anything new for months on end.

So with this weeks news I'm saddened to see them go, but to my fellow simmers WOAI is not the only group doing this. They stopped having the most comprehensive/up to date packages for about a year now. A serious internet search would show you what i mean. And I'm talking about freeware ai packaged into excecutables. To abide by avsim rules I'm going to play it safe and refrain from using particular group names in case some of their work is done by copyright infringement (idk honestly but since I've never seen anyone on here reference them before I don't want to start something).

Anyway the point of that was to say that while we will soon lose another great contributor to the fs freeware world there are still others toiling away in the background making great freeware for us that a decent internet search will lead you to.

Yes those un-named groups are using files without permission. One is the name of a software company that is famous for a document format and the other looks like the place where airplanes fly. A third is named after frozen water, but is not as well known.

Yes, i was just responding to the 'rock' comment after I inferred WOAI was not really designed for FSX.

Maybe I don't know a 4th! Or I do and just don't realize it! Can you come up with a clue like I did!!

I am not happy with the fact they are closing down, in FSX I still use them, I will be downloading all of their files up to the last day available just to make sure I have the most recent updates. I WILL NOT however be uploading their "software" to any website, I will keep it on a flashdrive or DVD for archival purposes as is my right as an end user to freeware, and if one of my friends wants to use some of the files I will e-mail them that (I will not be broadcasting my library for e-mail on ANY forum or website so please don't ask, these files will be strictly for my friends and flight group members). I hope to see the WOAI team come back as another group as I did appreciate their work and they made quite an impact for the positive on the flightsim community as a whole.

As one of the founders of WOA please allow me to throw in my 2 cents:

After reading through this thread it amazes me to see that 99.5 percent of the users never seem to have understand that:

1) WOA never had any own models

2) WOA never had any own reapints

3) WOA never had any own flightplans

4) WOA never hosted the packages on their site

The only things we owned were:

1) The WOA Installer

2) The WOA packager (never made available to the public)

3) The WOA webspace for our frontpage and the forum

The whole WOA thing did work because before we used a component for a package we asked the original author of that component for permission to use it.

No permission = No package

The agreement with the original authors was that packages will only be uploaded to avsim and flightsim and will be removed if

a ) the original author wishes to have his packages removed

b ) WOA decides to close shop

You see the whole thing was based on trust and respect and even with our closure we will not leave that path of trust and respect. We will have to ask the poor library managers to delete the packages from their servers.

As described above you will find all components of the packages here at avsim or over at flightsim. All you have to do is to grab them and put them together. All that has gone is the easy way to install.

One last note:

I got a telephone call from someone from a facebook group yesterday. I don´t know his name; he phoned with hidden number and asked me to let them continue our work.

If you read what I have tried to explain above you will hopefully understand that we can´t allow a stranger the usage of our packages.

So please refrain from phoning and mailing me concerning this topic.

Thanks for listening and thanks for using our work during the past years.

I would like to ask then, is it against your "terms and conditions" to have a backup DVD made for PERSONAL use with no public distribution so that the individual can still enjoy the work over the years?
