More like Saul, from Breaking Bad.

The law would disagree with you. How you view laws and legality is up to you I'm not your priest. I personally am not find of ignoring them. But then I've gotten a speeding ticket so far from perfect. However you don't own the media be it music or movies or software. You purchased a license to use it and agreed to the creators terms. They decide how you use it, you decide if you agree or not with the terms.

Technically it is because you are bypassing or hacking a safety feature put in to try and prevent that in the first place. I think it also voids your warranty.

Your phone isn't. Tablets are. Figure that out. That has nothing to do with this topic though but if you can make that leap that's up to you.

In the US it's not illegal to jailbreak your phone but it is an iPad. Weird.

Wow, this went off topic quickly.

Back to the stated subject of this thread, WOAI is leaving us. They developed the packages, they can do with them whatever they want. If they no longer want them to be available, then we should respect and comply with their wish. It sounds like they have become tired of Flight Sim and hosting and supporting the WOAI packages. It would not be out of line to contact them and ask permission to host the current files or even if they would relinquish ownership and control of WOAI to someone else.

Just my opinion, take it for what it is worth.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

All they are saying is they will be removing all files from AVSIM, FLIGHTSIM and their support forums will go black. Nowhere does it says it's prohibited to make them available via other sites. If everyone wants to play Lawyers R Us, then they should publicly and EXPLICITLY PROHIBIT anyone from making the packages available after April 30, 2013, and not leave it open for interpretation

Thety don't have to say or do anything. Existing copyright prevents anyone else from distributing the packages.

Well, freeware with terms of usage is why I stopped developing. I gave all my work away for free with no copyright or terms of use. If everybody did the same we could have covered the entire planet in great and detailed scenery by now, but it is impossible when you need to seek permission from 100s of developers and spend most of your time finding out who owns credits to the various files. It often took less time creating our own 3D objects than trying to get hold of somebody who had changed their e-mail address since releasing their freeware. I don't dispute the right people have to copyright and restrict how their creations are used, but it does more harm than good for the community as a whole. Because of these copyright issues the developer group I belong to only use our scenery privately and don't distribute it. Too bad really. We have most of the smaller airports in Northern Alaska made in great detail for instance.

I have to agree with this. It amazes me how many freeware developers are so fussy about copyright when they aren't even making any money out of it. I understand that they do not want others to get the credit for their own work, but it seems to me that some guys see creating freeware as an "ego booster", rather than a desire to contribute to the flightsim community. If you are pulling out of this community for good, then the only sensible reason that I can see to remove all access to your work is if you can't afford the cost of a hosting site for your files. That being the case, offering someone else the opportunity would seem to be the best solution.

It's sad to see these guys go. They've done so much for the community and Flight Sim just wouldn't be the same without them. Call me crazy but..I have a funny feeling about flight sim. First they cancel Flight, then GameSpy closes multiplayer, and now we're seeing great websites like WoAI close down.

Could this be a sign? Is it the beginning of the end?

I hope not.

Will be sad to see World of AI disappear. Have been processing their files in the library for years now. I was hoping they'd hang in there or hopefully manage to make some arrangement for their files to live on.....

and yes we're the ones who are going to have delete their files from the AVSIM library one-by-one. I'm not looking forward to that at all.

At any rate I'm certainly saddened to hear they'll be closing down completely. They've been a valuable contributor to FS and will be missed.

I have all the airline packages I want plus the installer saved on my external HD anyway.

Even if they go south I can install at will, so it's really a no factor.

Besides, everything comes to an end eventually. Soon something better (and maybe freeware as well) will take it's place. FSX has new things developed for it all the time.

I'm not the least bit worried.

As people have said, as a matter of law they have exclusive distribution rights. Doesn't make pulling files hosted on other sites any less incomprehensible. What a waste.

Yes, copyright law is deeply flawed, but ultimately this was up to WOAI and they chose this route, so I'd reserve my dissatisfaction more for them in this case.

IMHO I think if it was just WOAI itself involved, they probably would leave the files up, but with others involved, I don't think they really had much of a choice. It may be possible that some if not all of the developers/contributors , may take it upon themselves to distribute their files, We'll just have to see what happens.

Thanks

Tom
