February 2, 201313 yr I suggest you learn to read. "wide area" does not mean the whole world. I wouldn't consider that nonsense, just simple fact. Not a knock at Opus so chill out. For what it does, Opus is a very good program. For what it doesn't do, the developers are working on it. That's what makes the world go around. Vic With the word 'world' I didn't mean the entire actual world but the FSX world around you (there never is an entire world active in FSX) . English isn't my native language: if it would have been I probably would have said it different. But anyway, OpusFSX also does NOT apply local weather to a 'wide area' around you, so what you said is still wrong and not a fact. And using the word 'local', as you just suggested, would be a bit odd because that would defeat the purpose of your post... I mean, applying local weather locally is exactly what we want and what OpusFSX (and I presume AS2012 too?) does...
February 2, 201313 yr Its cloud depiction isn't quite as good as REX but is far better than the puffball effect I get with OpusFSX Opus does not draw the "puffball effect". It just sets the weather. The clouds are depicted by FSX using whatever cloud textures you have installed. Regards, Kevin LaMal "Facts Don't Care About Your Feelings" - Shapiro2024
February 2, 201313 yr Just finished an hour and a half long flight with AS2012. From KMKC (Kansas City Downtown) to KICT (Wichita). Used AS2012 for the weather engine, with REX textures. This was an IFR controlled flight, not necessarily soup, but not great VFR either. Conditions were overcast the whole flight, ceiling at 6000ft. Winds stayed steady and no crazy shifts. AS2012 has been patched up to SP2 Beta 4. It is great to know it is still in a very active development cycle. I also own OPUS along with REX, and im sure both of those products would have protrayed the weather very much the same. AS2012 stays my favorite because of the extra options it has to make it work "the way you want it." I have also been using HiFi's products for many years now and they have a loyal customer here. Whats happening in this thread seems to be a classic Ford vs Chevy debate. I say use what works best for you. OPUS/REX/AS2012 are all fine products and im glad to see the competition. It means that many years after the release of this sim, it is still alive and thriving. Ill include a couple of screenshots to show you the conditions i was flying in. Note the timer on the bottom right of the radio stack in the cockpit...i was flying for quite a while. This is running on Windows 8 Pro Computer Specs: i5-4690K 3.5 GHz overclocked to 4.0GHz / MSI GTX 960 4GB Video Card / 16GB Kingston HyperX Fury 1866MHz DDR3 System RAM / MSI Z97-G45 Motherboard / Crucial MX200 500GB mSATA SSD
February 2, 201313 yr At the end of the day I enjoy all three. They each offer benefits according to the mood of the user. This statement in itself speaks volumes.
February 2, 201313 yr Opus! Best weather engine, great camera configuration plus network support (like wide view). Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2 Matthew S
February 2, 201313 yr Commercial Member There's always IF's weather to consider if you just want to go flying. It's not downloading internet data, instead it simulates global weather systems so you can fly anywhere anytime. It kind of makes weather a bit more interesting sometimes where real world weather can remain the same for long stretches. It's another way to get exciting weather. A live update is planned whereby the simulated global environment is interchanged with real world data, but IF does a lot more than weather and is currently getting a pro navdata upgrade. February 3, 201313 yr Author Well, after lot's of head scratching, I bought AS2012. Opus certainly has its supporters and I'm sure it's a fine program. I have had HiFi products before and had good results, plus it's on sale right now for 39.99 Euros. Anyway, have done a couple of flights, trying different options. It does provide much better weather than default and the low clouds in hilly country look very realistic, plus upper winds seem much more consistent, so I'm happy. Thanks to all that gave their opinions, it gave me lots to consider. Dale
