Will We Ever See A 6ghz CPU?

Equiped with the knowledge that FSX is CPU speed dependent and seeing that CPUs are more about the number of cores, will we ever see a 6ghz CPU?

 

What options do we have? Coolers? I need more speed!!!!!!

I keep seeing them while I sleep, I have Intel Cpu dreams almost every night :lol:

I thought, and I could be very wrong, that both Intel and AMD a few years ago said that faster processors than what we have right now are just not economical or practical and for the foreseeable future, that the speeds we are at will be it for a while. That is why they began to switch to multicores rather than ramping up processor speed. Like I said though, I could be very wrong.

You can probably hit the Mid-5GHz range with phase change cooling, but if you want 6GHz or higher you'll need some serious sub zero temps that only the likes of dry ice or liquid nitrogen/liquid helium can provide and those solutions require constant refilling of the coolant (because they evaporate in open air).

 

Hasse has more experience in this department, perhaps he'll stop by and explain more.

I think both Intel and AMD are focusing on power management and video, not speed. :(

I don't think it will matter. We've already hit the VAS wall...

6 Ghz with these thermal footprints will not be possible.

Not on DX10. You can run at insane quality levels with the highest detail add-ons on the market and not hit VAS limits w/DX10.

Never say never, but probably not for the foreseeable future, there has been relatively little improvement in speed for perhaps 5 years now, as said above both Intel and AMD have moved into adding additional features and cores.

It's actually been more like 10 years. Basically ever since from Pentium 4 came out, the speeds have been stable hovering around 3-4 Ghz.

Likely the CPU hit their limits now it's making them more energy efficient, and GPU where the improvements will occur. Any gains since 2006 been incremental at best in CPU speed.

Individually each upgrade has been incremental, but add them all up and today's fastest chip is significantly faster than the fastest chip then, even on a per-thread/core basis (let alone the multi-threaded performance with the greater core/threaded chips available today).

Hmmmm... but there's a lot of addons that won't with DX10. Then we have to think... will devs make them compatible knowing that there is no further development on FSX as a base product? Or will they migrate to P3D?

 

I'm not about to run DX10 fsx on my system... plus I've heard NI settings don't work well and the AA doesn't do a good job either.

I only know that Intel is going with more efficient CPUs instead of overclock ability. Take for example Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge. You can overclock SB up to 5Ghz while IB gets up to 4.5Ghz. The problem was and is with IB is Intel didn't use same thermal paste in IB like in SB, that caused the heating problem. I also think you can get IB to 5Ghz but you probably have to use big water cooling system.

So far so good, almost every add-on I run is compatible. The only glaring issue is a lack of night lights in a few scenery products.
