Dear fellow loyalist

So what makes you stay?

mine is:

1. Leonardo Maddog 2010 FS2004 > I know it is also made for fsx but boy do I long for better smoothness and stabiliy more than anything?

2. Airsimmer > it is far from anything special,in fact there are still empty checklist boxes regarding this add on but well I bought it and complaining is just making everything worse.. I kinda like it..

3. Tons of freeware scenery (I didnt know that the plural form of sceneries doesn't exist, it remains scenery LOL) I have compiled for so many years

4. AerMacchi... 1 of the best freeware add on for low and slow flight..

5. In fact I'm thinking of buying Coolsky's Super 80.. I'm a happy laggard

6. All Indonesian scenery which is actually tons of them...

7. My good old Wilco PIC 737... Don't need the evolution, it is an old type in RW anyway

8. With everything maxed and ticked... except clouds distance and drawing.. (yes, everything in the "hardware tab" interface" is maxed with AA 8xSQ via nvidia insp)

9. FSNAV !!!

10. Scroll to zoom in and out

11. 60 FPS in a very very dense airport, cloud layer is 8 and 100% WOAI traffic plus IMT (Indonesian Mega Traffic-freeware)

12. John Dees, Dillon, Fozzer, Kiwi "Ian" Flyer, Rafal (how's life mate), Miguel Hernandez, Rob, Appliance, HoratioWondersocks, GeyerH, mebull...

13. The most stable sim ever..

14. There's no number 14.. You got to make your own list captains!!

Remember, it is not what You do that matters, it's why You do it... and our assumptions always govern our behavior... :drinks:

Have a nice weekend everyone.. :D

14. The fact that I have spent too many years obsessing over AI. I can go to the most godforsaken airport in the middle of nowhere and still spot an airline that I had forgotten I installed about 7 years ago !

LOL... 7 years and you haven't re formatted your OS.. That's something!

Not quite...I have been on Win7 for about three years. I carried over all my old FS9 stuff when i did the re-install

1. Lots and lots of addon scenery, much of it freeware, but many from Blue Print Simulations, two (SEA, SFO) from FlyTampa, and one (ORD) from FSDream Team. Although I have to admit that Blue Print releases FSX versions of everything they produce as well.

2. Addon aircraft, mostly freeware (Posky Boeing 757, 767 series, Project Airbus A318, A319, A320, A321 series) plus the payware Wilco/feelThere CRJ series).

3. REX Overdrive (use textures only)

4. Prefer the FS9 ATC windows with all white text over FSX ATC window with multicolor text since it's easier for me to read.

5. With all its faults, I prefer FS9 stock ATC (with EditVoicePack mods) over the stock FSX version. The FS9 stock ATC does NOT start nagging me to "Please exit the runway as soon as possible" the moment my wheels touch down.

6. Vastly better performance on my rig of FS9 as opposed to FSX. My rig's still relatively new to me, but had to be built of quite modestly priced parts as these were the best I could afford. It runs FS9 with very high fluidity in most situations and even acceptable performance on overcast, rainy or snowy weather while on final to a highly detailed addon airport with high traffic volume. Even then, it is never unflyable while I cannot say the same for FSX.

7. I'm a cheapskate as well as being poor. Even if I had the money to do so, I would be loathe to repurchase FSX versions of all the payware scenery/aircraft I've bought for FS9. To me, FSX is slightly better, visually, than FS9, but not so much so as to make such another investment in addons worthwhile or even justifiable.

I am wondering how many missed app/go-arounds did you have prior to touchdown LOL

Well, yes fsx is better in most areas although I would avoid head to head comparison, in fact I just got Captain Sim 737-200 1.0 and despite of incomplete and missing features, so that 40 euros is a prove I did attempt to make friends with fsx, but new friends are different with good old friends

What keeps me flying FS9? - I'll try to be as brief as possible :

Not going to assign numbers to these:

a) The fact that I can complete a good area of Canada & Alaska with really, really great freeware airports and some payware that is near equal to FSX. In particular I've been flying pretty much in Saskatchewan these days, with the amazing airports that Gregory Putz has in the library. IMO they are near equal to the OrbX stuff i have in FSX.

B) Stable enough frame rates to enjoy heavy weather, heavy AI traffic & large airports with complex planes. While I don't fly bigger planes often, it's nice to be able to do so and not watch a slideshow.

c) The ability to obsess over AI to a point that borders on unhealthy - I'm currently (still) working on installing the Small Canadian Operator packages from the library - a lot of work, but it'll be worth it when I'm done! The MAIW stuff is also great, and fits in extremely well with all the airports I've upgraded.

d) This might sound strange, but one of the big things that causes me to start up FS9 over FSX these days is the ability to create and improve... For example, I've combined and redone the scenery for CYWG and CFB Winnipeg to allow for the newer terminal scenery while integrating some of the great CFB Winnipeg scenery available. I've also starting working on upgrading some of the smaller airports around Edmonton. And this in in addition to working on my own XML glass gauges with the intent of turning Eric Dantes Twin Otter into (sort of, within certain limitations) a Viking Air 400 series.

I'm well aware that I could make my own stuff in FSX as well, but for some reason it's more satisfying to create something where I don't compare what I'm creating with existing payware. If i were making my glass twin otter gauges in FSX, for example, I'd be looking at the screenshots of the upcoming version of the Aerosoft Twotter and think to myself, 'why bother'!

Hi Coltrane,

thanks for 12...

My shortlist:

1. The freeware sceneries at avsim.su resp. avsimrus.com

2. Callclassics propliners, Dreamfleets 727, SCS Tu-134

3. FSHotSFX

4. Tons of AI traffic

5. And last but not least, as Jim writes, the possibility to edit, compile/decompile files; and its backward-compatibility (I even run some FS2000 sceneries...!).

Greetings to all FS2004 fellows!

Well... why do I use FS 9?

Mainly, my computer... it's OLD! (You can look at the specs!)

Given that, FS 9 still runs very well for what I do with the sim. Someday I'll upgrade, but if it isn't broken, don't fix it.

COSIMbanner_AVSIM3.jpg

I'm a huge fan of heavy iron so my sim is composed entirely of civil jets. What keeps me in FS9? A multitude of things:

-Any major (or minor) airport I approach or depart from has tons of AI all using accurate and up to date flight plans. I've got almost 25GB worth of AI traffic alone that I built from ground up flying around every continent of the FS9 world. If it's one thing I've backed up, it's all of my AI traffic files. Recently I re-installed FS9 after a year long hiatus, but having three backups in three separate locations of my traffic files allowed for quick reinstallation of everything. I also upgraded my machine and it's running FS9 even better than my old machine.

-Not a separate point but more related to the first one. If I'm approaching Heathrow, one of the busiest airports in the world, I want to be able to simulate that in FS9 as well. My AI is always at 100% giving me tons and tons of flights just like at the real Heathrow. Default ATC has quite a hard time keeping track with everyone. Indeed, just yesterday I wrapped up a long haul flight and while on approach to Heathrow, ATC was giving approach clearance to at least 20 aircraft heading towards Heathrow, from a Cathay flight inbound from Hong Kong to my own Emirates flight from Dubai. AISmooth kept the go-arounds in check so it was slightly less hectic, but even so quite challenging. Real life Heathrow is just as busy, and so is my FS9 rendition of it.

-Real world weather, primarily real world weather that involves lots of cloud layers. Nothing beats climbing above a thick layer of clouds and emerging into brilliant sunlight. Nothing also quite beats descending into extremely thick fog, and relying solely on your instruments to arrive safely.

-The sheer amount of addons, freeware and payware. Unfortunately, most of the freeware ones are now gone due to a hard drive crash, but I'm in the process of repopulating my FS world with only the very best of addons from around the world. Payware are easy to redownload and install, freeware takes searching... this website is a HUGE help: http://www.freewarescenery.com/fs2004.html

-The most important one: performance. Sorry but if I'm trying to simulate flying, everything must be buttery smooth. Everything I stated above, from the massive amounts of AI to the real world weather, gives me a solid 60FPS with absolutely 0 stuttering. FSX just can't handle what I want, regardless of how many addons I throw at it. In fact, I've been reading that installing too many addons makes FSX unstable. My previous FS9 installation had almost 700GB of files in it built over a span of 4½ years. In that time, I only recall having 3 CTD's and that too because of faulty sceneries. FS9 is a stable platform, there's no denying that. Kindly show me anyone who's using 100% AI, extremely high detailed airports, multiple cloud layers, and whatever else and rocking 60FPS in FSX. Every time I see FSX screenshots of major airports around the world, I see either barren airfields or minimal AI (15% AI, lol).

FSX is a joke, I don't care much if the graphics are to die for, if there's more detail, if it's a more advanced platform for developers or whatever, performance and realism matters most to me. I rather not fly around in the worlds best Airbus A320 for FSX at a nearly empty CDG that feels more like a slideshow than an actual simulator. Yes, the eye can't see more than 24FPS, but FSX cannot give me what I want AND deliver steady 24FPS. FS9's set the standard for me and FSX is yet to deliver. Been there and done that. It's simply not worth the amount of time AND effort invested.

I'm sorry if any FSX users are offended by my post, but after trying FSX a multitude of times, nothing came to fruition out of it. I spent over a week trying to fine tune everything from all the various forum posts but nothing at all worked. About the only thing I found FSX good for was for GA flying in areas with little to no development. Consequently, I'm going to stick with FS9 until I give up flying as a hobby entirely.

You've got a treat coming your way in a week or two!!

Is it the the VC-10 engineer panel!!??
