February 10, 201313 yr Get an iPad with the most memory you can afford!! You don't think you will need the space at first, but as you see how useful the darn thing is, slowly it begins to be filled with..... stuff. If you are going to drop $500 on a tablet, really look at ASUS. Anything they build hardware wise is really solid stuff. Dave Lamb True, as you pay more, the Androids get a lot more competitive but there is still the software disadvantage. Plus many Android tablets require additional hardware (wireless hot spot) for anything but WiFi access......... If you do go for an Android, just make sure to do due diligence on your research first. In the phone market things are a lot more equal, but not so much on tablets yet except for the more expensive ones. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. February 10, 201313 yr I've got the latest iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab. The Samsung almost never gets used (got it at work). The iPad is far from perfect, but super easy to use. Coupled with my iPhone, Apple TV and Macbook it has made my life super easy. The only thing that really sucks with the iPad is its connection to iTunes - hands down the worst software I own. As for aviation, all the pilots I know personally use iPads on behalf of their airline - and I know a lot of them flying for airlines all around the world. February 10, 201313 yr You guys convinced me... I'm getting an iPad. Now, it's either wait for the Mini with Retina which is "supposed" to be released next month or get the iPad 3 with Retina display next week. Honestly, I think I'll have myself an iPad 3 next week. What tipped the scale in Apple's favor? The quality of app available, especially when it comes to aviation. I haven't checked, but I think XP even has built-in capabilities for the iPad. Not sure but I thought seeing something to that effect in the menus. I have an iPad 2 and iPad 3 with retina display. I use it for charts which is very useful and realistic since many real life airlines are switching from paper to digital charts. There is only one thing I would suggest and that is to wait. Rumours are that Apple will be releasing the iPad 5 as early as march. The new iPad will most certainly be thinner and lighter than the previous version (iPad 4). I do find that the iPad 3 can be quite heavy. I will buying the iPad 5 when it comes out. Mike Keigley
February 10, 201313 yr Author Commercial Member Eventually, developers will build for android I endure this agony everyday when it comes to our FS hobby. Eventually XP will be fixed. Eventually P3D will become 64bit with DX11 support. Eventually 3PDs will develop for XP. Rinse and repeat. I'm not going to also play along and letting the eventually song dictate what tablet to buy. I have been an Android phone user since the first EVO came out and right now I have a Galaxy Nexus. I know very well the quality or lack thereof of the vast majority of the apps in the Play Store. Like I said in my OP, I am looking for a tablet that would be more catered to the aviation enthusiast and I think iOS has the edge by far on that. I have an iPad 2 and iPad 3 with retina display. February 10, 201313 yr Wait until after the March announcement! There's no point on spending $400-500 on an iPad, and finding out there's a new one in the stores! There should be a refresh of the iPad Mini. Maybe with a retina display (a tad more expensive than its predecessor). Also the heavily rumored iPad 5/5th generation. My personal choice would be the iPad Mini. Although I only own an iPad 2 the iPad 3/4 with Retina Display is overkill in my opinion...The iPad Mini is small, compact, neat, cheap but good quality and very light. A great choice for a simmer or pilot! As I said, wait until later into next month, as there should be a release of some sort in the coming weeks.
February 10, 201313 yr For aviation purposes,I intend to buy the wi-fi only mini and bluetooth it with my XGPS 150 reciever and use Garmin Pilot....Seems like a perfect match for the limited space in my 150 cockpit... C172P N97674 PPL SEL Complex High Performance

I'll be monitoring the major iPad blogs because I think everyone is split whether it will be March or October. I can always buy it from Amazon and hope the new one is released before the 30 day return policy is up! Regards, Efrain RuizLiveDISPATCH @ http://www.livedispatch.org (CLOSED) ☹️

February 11, 201313 yr Like I said in my OP, I am looking for a tablet that would be more catered to the aviation enthusiast and I think iOS has the edge by far on that. For the moment, the iOS platform has the edge...and by all means, if you are up for an iPad, buy an iPad. I never said that the product was bad, just that you are locked into a platform that requires everything to be Apple approved. iPad did lead the way and for some time, I believe, they will still have the aviation corporate market locked up. They are big enough to be able to provide the kind of support that aviation customers require. The android is not so corporate market based, at least not yet. For simming, android is also behind the curve...but Google is moving at warp speed to catch up and yes, with open source, you do get a bit of -good and bad- apps whereas with the iPad, it has to be Apple approved even before you get it. While it is limiting, it can be argued that this is a level of support that android can't provide. I see both sides of that argument. I am certain the iPad will serve you well. I am of the opinion that open source is a better way to go, hence my preference for android. Time will tell who wins that contest. All the best, Dave Lamb David L. February 11, 201313 yr you are locked into a platform that requires everything to be Apple approved. Not necessarily. You can Jailbreak any iOS device, just as long as you know what you are doing. Or if you want to keep it legal. You can always download Xcode sign-up for an Apple Developer account, learn Objective C/C++, Cocoa etc..and develop you own iOS applications.
February 11, 201313 yr Efrain, which ever way you go here is a great app for tablets. I have it on my Android tablet, also available for Ipad. It works with FSX or Xplane. If this is confirmed in the next few days, I guess I will get the iPad next week. The current model is actually the iPad 4. It has the much improved lighting adapter and I believe it has a faster processor. I did not touch on the rumours because they are in the end just that, rumours. However I can understand your desire to get if you have the need now. These rumours are elusive. Given the fact that the iPad mini was just released I think it is likely that the release will be soon. I also wanted to make one comment regarding the retina display. There is no comparison. Like I said I have an 2 and 3 with Retina. At first I didn't notice that much until after awhile only used the 3 and let the kids have the two. Whenever I pick up the two I am amazed at the difference in quality. So in this case I would recommend you not get the iPad mini because it is not yet retina display. The next model is supposed to be with retina. I know some people like the size but I believe that size of the original iPad is the perfect size for viewing movies photos and web pages. Looking at charts on a mini might just be to small imho. Mike Keigley
