NGX (and FSX) has never been better

Featured Replies

Recently I had to rebuild my entire FSX rig. I dreaded the task because it is quite a large endeavor (see My PC & My Simulator). But, it was well worth it even though it took me quite a while. I decided to follow Word Not Allowed's approach (http://#####...hardware-guide/) which includes the windowed mode V-Sync technique.

I kept everything plain and simple. No external frame limiters, no online tweaking tools, no gimmicks. Just a clean install and the following small number of tweaks to the fsx.cfg and a little nvidia inspector tweaking.

// SB 26JAN2013 System Rebuild. FSX.cfg (only mods are shown)
// Reference: http://#####.wordpress.com/fsx-software-and-hardware-guide/
// nvidia inspector: 1.9.6.8, nvidia drivers: 310.90

I can honestly say that my NGX (and FSX) has never been better, smoother and faster. No shimmering, locked frames at 30fps (or below in busy areas). The VC is like a picture!

I am more than pleasently surprised (a bit shocked actually) how things have improved. New video drivers, Win7 windowded V-Sync and keeping it simple has made a huge difference. See http://forum.avsim.n...other-hardware/ - a BIG thanks to the contributors listed in this doc. Big advances since I bought the NGX in 2011.

I will be getting the 780 (I waited out the 580 and the 680 so I deserve it right? - hehe) to help out in the dense clouds and for killer image quality (IQ) (not FPS).

Sorry if "I am a bit late getting to the party" as I have been away from flight sim for a while but I decided to post hoping to spread the word.

Cheers, Scott Ball

What next? Get some imaging software so can always return to the beautiful system you now have!

What was the cost of the rebuild? Of course you would have to include the cost of the video card. I am assuming you used the old one. How about some Pics.

Thanks,

Yeah pictures are much appreciated!! :acute:

Would you be able to give us your Nvidia inspector settings/screenshot please also?

and for inspector?? What kind of tweaks have you used?? Always from Word Not Allowed's guide?

I'm curious to see screen shots of your simulator in windowed mode with v-sync. I think that alone is giving you a placebo effect. We all know/knew that running FSX in windowed mode will yield you extra FPS. Windowed mode to me takes away from the immersion, but that's my opinion only. I'm even more curious because you and I have a similiar setup (give or take a few items) and I yield a solid 24/25 FPS even in sceneries that are hard on the frames. (i.e. FSDT FDFW as an example)

I followed Word Not Allowed's guide/approach and his NI settings all of which are detailed on his website (link provided in OP). I did nothing new or magic other than do the simple few things he mentioned from a clean install. Also, I provided a link to an "Official Software and Hardware Guide for FSX" which was posted on 25JAN2013 which I used as reference as well.

This was more of an information email highlighting the differences experienced by using Word Not Allowed's approach rather than a detailed analysis. There are quite a number of threads out there that detail numbers and benchmark scores etc.

Since I was "rebuilding", or, more accurately reloading, I thought I would try a different approach based on "recent" great work/discoveries by others way more knowledgeable than I. I was more than pleasantly surprised at the difference in performance with the exact same hardware. Nothing more than that really.

I have tried to follow Word Not Allowed´s guide several times, with no luck. That 30 fps tweak is not working at all, in my case. Unlimited fps is what makes my fsx run wonderfully.

I have 2700k, 16 Gb DDR3 , GTX 580. Zero issues and lighting fast performance in every situation, aircraft and scenery with Bojote´s cfg and Tabs´ NVidia Inspector settings (8xS , 4 Supersampling and 16AF).

Best.

Then you might have applied the tweak wrong. Remember that the tweak ONLY works when 30 FPS is maintained. Anything lower will have the except opposite effect. For me, this tweak has been the best thing since Bojote's FSX.cfg tweaks.

Arjen Vandervelde

Thanks Arjen. but i am very happy with my settings. Not a single problem, smooth as silk at KJFK with PMDG 737 , CB everywhere and autogen very dense at 1920X1200.

Enjoying the sim and not worried about performance. Hardware setup is not problem in my case.

Thanks, anyway.

VSYNC TWEAK – WINDOWED MODE

If you are a windowed mode user (multiple screens for example), then you will be please to know there is a “fix” for Vsync in the windowed mode.

Previously, when Vsync in windowed mode was activated in FSX.cfg per ForceWindowedVSync=1 line, the FPS would always run at refresh rate dividers… 60, 30, 15… meaning, it was never able to run 25fps, or 23… from 30, if system could not maintain, FPS would drop to 15. And that led to quite a lot of stuttering. There is a fix now: after FSX has been started, an Aero restart is required, which in return fixes the normal Vsync operation in windowed mode.

Hi,

I personally don't line windowed mode too. I prefere to run FSX in fullscreen. However, due to my second monitor, which I like to use for charts, Active Sky and other handy software I run my FSX in windowed mode in fullscreen.

Well this sounds stupid, but it works. Basically you have the FSX window and a programm called FSimtimizer will expand it onto your full screen.

So if your screen resolutuion is 1920x1080, and you run FSX and FSSimtimizer the FSX window will be pulled so that it fills up the 1920x1080 pixel on your screen. You don't see the task bar and you don't see the frame arround it.

It is basically fullscreen with the benefits of windowed mode.

I did not try Vsync on it tough.

Best regards,

Jonathan

Really? I lose at least 3-5FPS in windowed mode..Always have..With or without Windowed Mode Vsync; with or without any tweaks..Don't use ot for this reason alone..I have a Maximiser proggy too and that doesn't help..It's annoying as I'd like to use ENB and it doesn't work in FSM..
