February 12, 201313 yr I'm going to be up in Sedona, AZ in a couple of weeks and being a sea level flat-lander I think I should seize the opportunity to get some instruction. Has anyone done training up in this area and are there any schools they would refer? My instructors are not familiar with anyone out there. Thanks!
February 12, 201313 yr My parents have a house in Westwing mountain area and I always rent a 172 from Westwind at Deer Valley. What ever is up in Sedona will probably be pretty expensive. Chris Miller
February 12, 201313 yr Lovely country (or should I say very scenic area)... FS2020 Alienware Aurora R11 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10700F - Windows 11 Home 32GB Ram NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR
February 14, 201313 yr I'd look in to Sky Treks (928-282-6628) to see if they will go up with you. They do charters and the like. If you do it, you'll enjoy the aircraft carrier approach!
February 14, 201313 yr You could also drive to Prescott Airport (it's a great ride through Jerome). i don't remember how long it took me, but was probably an hour. 10700k / Gigabyte 3060
February 14, 201313 yr You might try nearby Cottonwood, Flagstaff, or as mentioned above, Prescott. Sedona airport can be a challenge to operate in or out of due to the topography, wind and other weather.
February 14, 201313 yr Author Thank you all for the suggestions, as I'll have a car, I'm also looking at the Phoenix and Tucson area. I just need one of the schools to call me back!!! Many are hard to reach which always surprises me.

Yes, from airnav.com for ksez -ARPT ON 500 FT HIGH MESA. -TURBULENCE MAY BE EXPERIENCED INVOF ARPT. -WHEN LANDING RY 21, DURING STRONG SW WIND CONDITIONS, STRONG DOWN DRAFTS ARE VERY PROBABLE NE OF APCH END OF RY 21. .. 10700k / Gigabyte 3060

I've heard some equate it to landing on an aircraft carrier. Planning for when the approach isn't correct or when winds are unfavorable over the threshold is recommended.
February 14, 201313 yr Author Haha, nice shot. Thanks, I have read the notes on Sedona. I would scratch Sedona off the plan if the conditions are not appropriate for it that day. I want to learn about and practice operating from airports at altitude with a local instructor. We can talk about it, but I can't do this sort of stuff out here. This weekend, I was practicing landings in fresh unplowed one foot deep snow on a short turf field. I do enjoy flying under conditions that aren't always "standard".
February 14, 201313 yr If you want high altitude you should head out to Leadville Colorado. http://www.airnav.com/airport/KLXV Chris Miller
February 14, 201313 yr Author I'll work my way up to that someday. I've never climbed above 7500 feet!
February 14, 201313 yr I'll work my way up to that someday. I've never climbed above 7500 feet! Oh, wow. I don't have many hours below 7,500'! Out here in Colorado, the "low" part of low and slow is pretty relative. Scott
