Crash Detect vs Stress Damage vs Realism

Featured Replies

Ive set up my FSX to Full Realism including Stress Damage and Crash Detect. All the sliders are also on Full Realism. I did this to take advantage of the flight, systems and engine dynamics of some of the better done aircraft by well know developers like PMDG, Carenado, etc.

Sometimes I pay the price for poorly made 3rd party airports by crashing into buildings that aren't there or expecting mechanical functions to occur that don't do as they should, etc.

Im curious about how the rest of you deal with this and is it worth the aggravation of poor flight modeling messing up my realism expectations. Sometimes I wonder if this was Microsoft's idea of a "feel good" check. I do see obvious differences in torque, etc on single engine props but the other effects are only as good as the flight model Im guessing?

I have Realism at maximum settings, but I have Stress Damage and Crash Detection switched off, because it seems to misjudge the "impact force" when I land. Most of my landings with Crash Detection on result in a crash, although the impact couldn't have been that hard, and even the "Lord of the Landings" tool says that is was a good landing. Another problem that keeps me from turningn on Crash Detection is the one you mentioned: Invisible objects in the approach path (or sometimes AI aircraft of vehicles getting into my way)

Crash detection is set to off. Too many airports have some really annoying crash boxes. Rest of the options are set to full realism.

Me too, plus there are too many other unrealistic issues with FSX (airport vehicles running over me, etc.) that I really don't like waiting the 2 minutes for everything to re-load after a "crash is detected".

I have it all set to off, do to a few times where im just begining to pull back and lift off and some one on vatsim spawn on the runway.

Same here.

BTW Don't just simply set all realism sliders to the right because some addon planes require different settings. I remember a plane (can't remember which) that needed the realism sliders in the middle and another that needed them completely to the left in order to take full benefit of the programmed realism (or the programmed failures and damage!). So it's not really a set and forget setting: you have to read the manual of the addon plane to see if it may require special settings and so you may have to adjust those settings whenever you fly that specific plane if you want as much realism as possible. Full right doesn't always equal full realism. However, no matter what the manual says, Stress Damage and Crash Detection are always off on my PC.

Same here, although I set the Realism settings to what ever is recommended by the developer of the plane I am flying. If PMDG says to set the Realism sliders a particular way then I do what they recommend. The crash detection and stress causes damage settings I keep off. I will know if I crash, I dont need to the sim to tell me and there are two many cases where the crash detection causes problems with addon sceneries and AI. Not worth the trouble for me.

We recommend to all our customers of the FSL Concorde-X that they turn the settings related to 'aircraft stress' off. For an aircraft that spends 90% of the flight at the edge of its flight envelope, these settings often cause adverse effects.

I always set crash detection to Off for all the reasons mention above.

FSX only simulates one type of crash - fiery explosion of death and catastrophic breakup of the plane. It doesn't matter whether you nose-dive straight into the ground or just over-rev the engine for a bit.

One thing I really miss from Flight Unlimited II/III is the ability to e.g. damage just the landing gear or a prop or similar from an "imperfect" landing.

Some add-ons indeed require you to adjust your realism settings. Many require the torque and p-factor to be set to something other than full-right.

Nothing more annoying than completing a long-haul flight with a good landing after a tricky, cross wind or low visibility approach, only to have the flight terminated by a crash on the taxiway into an invisible object! Replay of the landing is lost as well. Crash detection definitely off. I know when I've landed hard without it.

No need to setup FSX with full realism when it isn't very realistic in the first place.

Crash detection definitely off. I know when I've landed hard without it.

+1 I have had those silly A..ed sliders (p-factor, torque crash damage) off for years. In your heart, you know when you done wrong.

You're right about setting it up for individual aircraft developers of course. In the end Im starting to believe that if you fly mostly "higher quality" developer's products than leaving the sliders in the middle or off completely is the best compromise. I cant see myself changing this every time I get into a different airplane.

As for crash detect, it's not worth the aggravation and like someone said - nothing worse than landing after a long flight and then crashing for some uncontrollable reason that had nothing to do with your perfect landing.
