Proposed list of FAA tower closings - - - some very significant!

Sugar Land Regional (SGR)?

That's going to be interesting as I often see a Pilatus PC-12 and Piaggio Avantis running back and forth from David Wayne Hooks Airport (Tomball) to there.

Oh my, KGYY is on that list. They handle an average of 200 a/c every day, and since it's so close to MDW and ORD, that's just begging for trouble...

Bill,

Fully agree! Some make no sense. Gary is a prime example.

After a few mid air collisions and some runway incidents, they could start to change their minds.

Or to save even more money they could simply shut down all airports.

While they are at it they could cancel their own padded pensions, and cut their salaries by 77 %...Way To Go

I think there was a drag race on e runway for the Gimli Glider...

That's because it was turned into a race track.

I'll steer clear of politics, but some of these closings are a real shame. Take, for instance, KJQF (Concord Rgl, NC). That airport becomes an absolute zoo when race teams are departing and arriving before and after race weekend. The Coca Cola 600 Nascar race brings a ton of traffic, so I can only imagine the peril with the typical CTAF crazies. God forbid the winds are calm on that weekend. :Nail Biting:

Some pretty significant GA airports, some of which handle commercial pax traffic. Beloved Oshkosh (KOSH) is on the list!

http://www.faa.gov/n...d_Be_Closed.pdf

In my sim flying I frequent some of these, like my home base of Easton, MD. I have also been flying often out of Bloomington, IN; Lafayette, IN; KOSU in Columbus, OH; Baltimore Martin State, MD; Philadelphia Northeast, PA; Lakeland, Fla (which also hosts a large aviation show each year). Lafayette, IN is the home of the school of aviation at Purdue University, one of the few major universities with a degree program for pilots.

Also includes some primary airports at state capitals, like Jefferson City, Mo, Salem, Ore, Sante Fe, NM, Springfield, Ma, Topeaka, Ks, Springfield, IL.

Do you have the parent article to this documentation? It makes no since every major GA airport in the twin cities area is on the list. I'd love to know the story behind this document.

Dillon. It's a document on the FAA website. Its not based on one parent article. It's due to budget cuts by the federal government. There are articles everywhere about this. Do a Google for FAA tower closings. Virtually every newspaper is covering this. Here is for an example the article on CNN:

Zach, having lived in Kannapolis, NC for nearly ten years back in the seventies, I'm very much in agreement with you on this point.

Oh, I got it. This is part of the large cuts that's coming down through congress... Wow.

Well, its more that the president and congress do not have a budget, so a cross the board percentage cut kicks in due to laws already in place.

BTW, I just flew into and out of KSTP last week (FSX) as I mirror the travel and game schedule of my beloved alma mater, #1 Indiana. The Gophers played a really tough game. I recall play at Minnesota's end of the court with just under eight minutes left and Indiana ahead by 8 points. I don't know how many shots the Gophers missed, but they fought for and got several offensive rebounds on each of two possessions, eventually scoring on both. That was the point where I started to worry that my Hoosiers would get beat!

Reading, PA (Spaatz Field) is a real surprise as it is a well used business filed for the central PA region. It is also the home of the Mid Atlantic Air Museum (MAAM), home of the MAAM DC-3 and the B-25 Mitchell "BRIEFING TIME". It is also the location where AVSIM held on of our FANCON's. According to CNN, the FAA will start moving forward on this process on Monday...

Some NY selections surprised me too; Niagara Falls, Ithaca (what? Cornell University's home airport?), and Binghamton? Those are surprises along with Lynchburg's airport in VA.

Wow! I have been active on and off here since perhaps 1998 (my join date was influenced by an Avsim system overhaul) and this is the first time Tom that you have joined one of my topics. I am greatly honored! I too am familiar with both the Reading and Binghampton airports, having traveled on business to both of those communities frequently from 1984 to 1998 from my then home in southern NJ. I don't know what the economy has done to Reading, but it was quite active with high performance GA in the '80's and '90's.

I've gotta get OT for a second, now! My best friend (the other guy closer to the camera in my avatar) has a field in Kannapolis! It's 10 minutes away from my home and the field I fly the Cub out of. Such a small world! Do you remember "What-a-Burger"? Our regular spot after Cub flying.

Isn't that the airport all the NASCAR guys fly their owned airplanes out of?
