Reinstalling Windows/FSX

Featured Replies

Too bad for you. FSX works flawless for me. Go ahead and get Xplane or Prepar3D or both. The DSC or that other one. :)

Anyone know of a good post for backing up FSX before a re-install? Time to re-build this POS!!!

Checkout aerofly fs in the next version they are adding vc functionality, weather, day and night cycles, ILS and VOR, large jets and a larger area. The graphics are amazing. Check.out the aerofly forum on here and look at dev status

The ground textures may not be as sharp but FS9.75 looks very close to FSX. A far more stable release that offers nothing but flying not tweaking and re-installs at this point are unheard of. A recent post in the hanger forum confirmed FSX and problems are all but synonymous...

Not quite sure why you are having so much trouble. My FSX works flawless, I haven't had a CTD almost three months. Hope your re-build works! This one looks good:

How about one that includes all the things to back up? I plan on doing a complete re-install. Windows 7 and everything. So, I want to back up all my customizations, Nvidia inspector settings, add on customizations(RC4 airlines file), etc, etc, etc

Yeah, but I can't give up the NGX or photoreal scenery at better than FS9 resolution. So, I'm stuck with FSX. The other ones out there, FG, X-plane all look good but unfortunately there isn't anything else close to FSX for all the eye candy, scenery, and the detail of my favorite aircraft(737-700). So, I'm stuck with this piece of crap and trying to make it work again. What a pain....just breathing at it wrong causes it to crash. All the tweaks etc. Being afraid to touch something on it because it may crash. I wish I wasn't addicted to flight simming!!!!

Why would you backup a file that may be your problem? THINK!!!!! Start fresh.

Good luck then, sounds like your pretty close to throwing the PC out the window. The irony of Flight is it showed us how awesome FS11 would have been. Sucks for you guys putting up with this kind of effort from MS. Have fun...

Aerofly is interesting (I have it) but it's not really an FSX competitor. I understand frustration with FSX, but let me ask, are you running JUST FSX?! Are you running just the default scenery and default aircraft with no modules (weather, simconnect, FSUIPC, TrackIR)?! If not, then it doesn't really make sense to say that the developers of FSX made a POS because it has trouble running ALL the crazy stuff we've added on to it that they never even envisioned!

Well people with FS9 don't have even nearly as many problems while running many advanced addons and after all FSX was designed to support many kinds of third party addons on purpose.

I think FSX would have needed SP3.

FSX isnt crap. At its time of release, it was very stable. Quite difficult to get a CTD. Although is provisioned for addons to be made, no one including Microsoft ever imagined it to have the support and a million addons for it 6.5 years later. Therefore it just doesnt play nice with a bunch of addons. Simconnect cant handle it I dont think.

That being said, try a new fsx.cfg file. Run default aircraft and no weather and see if you get a CTD. Also check out the program appcrashview to see what file caused the error. Gives you a better hint.

Mine runs pretty good most times.

What makes you think FSX was "designed" to support many kinds of third party addons?!! I'm not sure that's an accurate formulation. It included simconnect, for instance, which "allows" for third party connections, but most of the stuff we add on to it now, these many years after it was completed, couldn't have been part of any design in its development. We are really pushing this aging sim.

People don't have as many problems with FS9, because FS9 can't be pushed as far to do many of the very complex things FSX can be pushed to do.

So, sorry. Apparently my original post wasn't nice. I wasn't trying to bypass anything really. Just was a heat of the moment thing. Anyone ever get so mad at FSX before they say a few choice words about it??? LOL :)

Does anyone know of a good doc or checklist maybe that can help someone make sure they remember all the things to back up and save off before a complete re-install of Windows/FSX? I want to wipe everything and start over but want to make sure I can bring things back up as close to what it is now(hopefully without the errors) as possible.

Thanks.

I don't want to back up everything. I guess this is why we need lawyers, huh? I should have specified even more clearly. I want to back up all the config, registration info, tweaks, etc. Not the bad files, whatever they are. I am going to re-install everything. Windows 7, FSX, Opus, NGX, UTII, FSGenesis, add on airports, etc. So whatever crappy bgl or corrupt file out there will be(in theory anyway) brand new again. Hopefully that clears it up enough for all the legal people out there.
