Is a <$800 laptop doable for FSX? Who laptops here?

Featured Replies

Anyone care to share how their overall laptop FSX experience goes? What do you use for controller on the go? Do visuals greatly suffer?

I figure go with a lower res 15in screen(not 1080p or 900p), full keyboard, nVidia gpu and near fastest cpu option. This should fair pretty well with all but the super heavy addons and settings I'd think.

May last year I bought my wife an Asus laptop with a 3 series core i7 (Ivy Bridge), 8GB RAM, and an Nvidia GT 630 1GB for a mere $800.  It games pretty well.  Haven't tried FSX on it of course, since my desktop is much better suited to that task.

Default Fsx aircraft, scenery, traffic, weather etc. maybe. Advanced payware aircraft, scenery, traffic, etc  no way

I get a Lenovo Y480 with i7 3610QM and GT650M. RAM is 16GB. Does NOT run FSX or P3D well with CaptainSim planes, Orbx sceneries, AS2012 SP2 weather, UTX, GEX and REX.

The Lenovo Y500 with 2.4GHz is on sale for $750. Sounds like I wouldn't really be happy with it I guess. Wish could borrow a laptop to test and return if not satisfied.

Well we'll soon find out if Laptops are deserving of the rubbishing they get in general.  Below are the specs for the new Laptop I'll be getting in a couple of weeks and after fine tuning Windows 7 and installing FSX Gold Edition and flying around the block a few times I'll get back to you all and let you know if works or if I'm planing on jumping off the nearest btidge with the laptop in one hand and the bill in the other.

That's an awesome laptop. Love me some Clevo, but I despise how Intel & Nvidia brand their mobile components, well most of their branding is intententionally misleading me thinks.

It should run FSX fairly well

I run FSX on a Lenovo W530 and I have mixed feelings about it. My specs are:

CPU:      Intel i7 3920XM

RAM:      8GB

GPU       nVidia K2000m w/2GB RAM

Display:  1900x1080

OS:         Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

I own a lot of payware aircraft, REX Essentials+, and lots of Orbx scenery and for the most part, I do ok as long as I limit the FPS to 20. My FSX settings a medium to high. I say mixed feelings as while it does work and is smooth for the most part, it took a lot of tweaking of the FSX cfg as well as keeping on top of drivers releases as it seems to be more sensitive to bad drivers than a regular pc. There is also the heat issue. If I'm flying the NGX into KSEA for example, the CPU fan positively screams despite the cooling pad and a fan directing cool air to the CPU vent.

You can run FSX on a laptop but you have to be reasonable in your expectations. Default aircraft and scenery, no problem. Default aircraft and Orbx scenery (only scenery I own) is fine. Some payware aircraft and Orbx scenery can be tricky.

An $800 is unlikely to be very powerful but will probably run default FSX just fine. Just be prepared to do tweaking.

Wow, $1000 more just for the processor upgrade alone!!!!!! Not sure its worth it.  Nominal clock is only .6GHz faster than the base supplied CPU; 2.4GHz vs 3.0GHz.

Core i7-3940XM 4/8 3.0 GHz 3.7 / 3.8 / 3.9 GHz

Core i7-3630QM 4/8 2.4 GHz 3.2 / 3.3 / 3.4 GHz
