FSX stutters at regular intervals, please help!

Featured Replies

Thanks for all the help from you guys!

I think nermingk was right! I checked the temperature of my CPU using CoreTemp tool only to realise that whenever FSX started to stutter the CPU temperature was raising to 255 C degrees! Then, after some time, it decreased, allowing FSX to get back to its normal state and then all over again. The stutters had nothing to do with AI traffic, neither with any background ongoing process.

Still my question then: why such a regular interval? Does it have something to do with some cooling malfunction? I'm going to get rid of as much dust as I can anyway, hope it helps.

Edit: I've cleaned my computer's interior, CPU's radiator and cooling fan. So far no temperature peaks and hence no stutters! Could it be that simple?Do you guys recommend any highly efficient cooling system?

Oh, and I'm attaching my .cfg file, in case it could help in optimizing my system's performance.

How come one of the display modes is 16 bit and the other one is 32 bit?  Both should be at 32 bit:

[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti  .0]
Mode=1680x1050x16
TriLinear=1
[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti  .0.0]
Mode=1680x1050x32
TriLinear=1

WideAspectView=False should be True (you have a wide screen).

SmallPartRejectRadius=4.0  is a FPS killer.  Another problem with Bojote's auto fsx.cfg program.

TextureMaxLoad=12  remove.  Default is 6 without the line in the config.  Remove it.  Probably the cause of most stutters.  Here's a quote from NickN who wrote the Setting up FSX and Tuning It guide:

"- Micro stutters (no need for TextureMaxLoad) - There is no need for TextureMaxLoad being changed or in the config as all we are doing with this edit is robbing peter to pay paul and using a lower or higher value to trim TBM instead of correctly rebalancing the scenery load or in the case of using 2048/4096 clouds, which I would NEVER do. We can accomplish the same goal by trimming TBM without TextureMaxLoad..   its just a multiplier for TBM.

6x<FSX textures size in KB> x TBM

Assuming we maintain a TBM that is not out of range, 40. 45, 50, 55, etc..  how can we know how many textures are in the scene? How do we know when that value fluctuates out of range for the hardware and comes back again, and, what that value is in a 'constant' range at any point in time in the render?

We dont! And never will.

Therefore, we use established reasonable TBM values that work with the video card memory and then trim TBM based ONLY ON the the individual user scenery load. 40, 80 or 120 does the job and you will find there are far better settings to work with to trim and stabilize stutters."

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks for useful advices! Like I probably mentioned in previous posts I was fully aware that my fsx.cfg hadn't been tweaked properly due to my ignorance of technical field:). Nevertheless I tried my best and followed the clues I found online.

Anyways, I suppose it would probably the best if I let FSX rebuild .cfg file again from scratch, especially that I'm not sure if I did this after installing my new GPU.

Kind regards,

Maciek

It appears you didn't delete your FSX.CFG when you changed video cards. Try:

1. Delete FSX.CFG.

2. Set up system with Word Not Allowed's Guide.

Have fun

Dave

That's exactly what I'm going to do, thanks!

MZ

I'm glad to hear that the advice on cleaning helped you. Now you can do the fine adjustment of FSX. Most important is that you no longer need to pause fsx before touchdown:)

uninstall, reinstall of FSX sp1 and sp2  reduced fsx load on my CPU.

To uninstall Sp1, check in windows installed updates section of the control panel.

Sp2 uninstall is in same place as all the other stuff you got installed.

Thanks again for all the support I got from everybody! I guess I should have come and seek help here much earlier than I did, I would definitely spare myself a lot of trouble:-).

Cheers,

Surprisingly, just today my problem appeared again. It is still caused by high temperature readouts of my AMD Fx 4100, but the reason of this readout is somewhat annoying. I've done some online research and it appears that some MSI motherboards paired with some AMD CPUs can't provide enough power for processors, while having them running close to 100% of their capability. This forces these (low-end, I suppose) motherboards to artficially trigger the highest possible temp readout, which I believe is 255 degrees. This allows the MB to enable throttling and significantly underclock the CPU...

So now who should I blame? The retailer from whom I bought my PC from or hardware manufacturer...? Has any of you encountered similar issues?

PS. Sorry if I wandered too far and turned this topic into hardware one, but I hope it's connected directly with the main topic of this thread.

It's possible that this problem could be cured by a bios update. That said, I have completely stopped buying anything from MSI myself, they are pretty much the worst hardware manufacturer IMO

vatsim s3

If the hardware can't handle the load, the only solution is to reduce settings to a point where it won't over-temp. Some motherboards have fan settings, make sure they are all on and set for max performance.

1. After you delete FSX.CFG does it still over-temp?

Dave

  • Author

Yeah, it happens also after deleting fsx.cfg. besides, I tend not to set the sliders on maximum...

Anyways, today I returned my computer to the shop but guys there didn't look quite eager to do sth about it. They downplayed the whole issue so I'm a bit worried if they do anything at all. For now I have to wait. Bad luck...

I wonder if a beefed up power supply might help - or if the motherboard is simply not up to the task..

Bert

If it overtemps with default settings, there is a major problem with the CPU or motherboard. What did you find on the fan settings? Maybe replace the thermal paste on the CPU.

Dave

  • Author

Guys, I read a lot about this throttling issues and came to conclusion that it has to be just my mobo simply not handling the power of CPU. That's why I've just bought a new ASUS motherboard and I'm currently in the middle of configuring my new FSX and reinstalling all the addons I got. Hope this is gonna be the end of my epic struggle:-).
