Fs global real weather and Opus

Featured Replies

Did you have a look in the documentation, I think there was an example in there as far as I can recall.

Not in front of the computer now so this is from my memory but basically you simply add parameters to the end of the shortcut that launches FSGRW by opening the properties of the shortcut and then add the parameters you want. A list of parameters that can be used will for sure be in the documentation but out of my head I remember FSX for the version of flight simulator, dynamic for type of weather update mode etc.

Give it a try and let me know if you need more help and if so I'll go into more detail when I'm in front of my computer.

WebMaximus, thank your for the reply.  I did read the example given in the instruction manual, but exactly where to put it is my problem.  I attempted to amend the target field in the program shortcut, but received an invalid error.  I'm sure it's not that difficult, but clearer instructions from the developer would be nice.

Man... I had one of my best flights, immersion wise, using the latest fsgrw! It was Sunday, but I'm still smiling about it!

1400 ft overcast at departure, where I could see the clouds layer while standing on the airfield. A soon as I took off, the clouds kept exactly where they were, passed thru it until getting clear sky and there wasn't absolutely a single could popping. I mean, it was THAT great!

I never experienced it using AS2012 or opus... never. Anytime I used one of these last two, the clouds would pop and/or shift when climbing from the runway.

At the arrival of was even better! I knew that I should get very low ceiling and fog. A very thick and low fog, as I was looking at the window and that's what I was seeing! lol

So, in the fsx, when doing downwing, base and turning final on the ils approach, what did I see? A very thick and low (visibility was 200ft) layer of fog! Not huge storm clouds completely out of the context, no clouds popping in the last minute, no wind shifts... I started to get bits of clouds as I was descending to the runway, entered the fog as just saw the runway below 200 ft! :-)

CAT II ils with minimums at 100 ft at the particular runway where I landed.

Awesome stuff this guys from FS Global!

I feel that this guys aren't getting the praise and publicity they should have... everyone got in the opusfsx wagon and having both, I feel that the experience is so much better using FSGRW than other weather software...

FSGRW is a wonderful piece of software! It makes all of my flights so much more immersive!

Have you ever tried an approach into LPMA? These local weather effects are fantastic! I am really looking forward to more of them to come.

I have to do it with the new build, because with the old one, the weather station for Madeira - LPMA was LPFU which is the old and deactivated station, so the weather there was incorrect... now they fixed it and I have to get my TAP A320 and go there! :-)

I'm not using autostart myself but I just tried the example in the documentation and it worked fine for me. Maybe the problem was you entered the parameters directly after the executable and within the quotation mark like this

"C:\Program Files (x86)\FSGRW\FS Global Real Weather.exe dynamic fsx 5 y n"

Instead it should look like this

"C:\Program Files (x86)\FSGRW\FS Global Real Weather.exe" dynamic fsx 5 y n

To make it as easy as possible below is a screenshot where you can see exactly how you should enter the parameters and using these parameters as seen below will start FSGRW using the dynamic weather mode, transfer the downloaded weather into FSX, quit FSGRW if not connected to FSX within 5 mins, start FSGRW minimized and not quit FSGRW automatically when/if you quit FSX.

In general about FSGRW I too find it very good!

The one thing I noticed the most and especially after the latest build is how fast the weather is injected into FSX...only takes a couple of seconds and sometimes not even that...amazing!

Another thing I also really like with FSGRW is how you really can "feel" the weather when you're flying and how the aircraft is affected during a crosswind landing for example. Now making crosswind landings has become a true challenge just like it should be!

Even though I already have all other wx engines I'm very happy with my purchase of FSGRW and can highly recommend it to anyone looking for that "real" feeling when flying !! Sure...you won't get the shaking head/view turbulence effects found in Opus for example but instead you will get weather that will truely have a very noticable effect on your aircraft...at least that has been my experience.

Editied to add one important thing I forgot to mention. In the latest version(s) of FSGRW you have an option where you can disable the turbulence effects only at the high altitudes. This is very good since that will in a way allow you to both have and eat the cake....you will get and feel turbulence during the most (at least to me) interesting phases of flight like after departure and during approach and landing but then when you're leveled off at your cruise altitude FSGRW will make sure no turbulence is injected into FSX and this in turn will make sure you won't have to worry about the notorious "S-turns" or any other odd behaviour from the autopilot in advanced aircraft like the NGX.

Thanks Richard, I hadn't tried the shortcut trick yet and it works a treat  :Applause:

One other thing that I find completely awesome in fsgrw is the ground wind variations!

Like, let's say the metar reports wind 300/5.

Using the shift+z, we can see those little wind variations, we actually fell in real life, both direction and speed... the wind can be 297/6, 302/3!!! I found it great!

I could only observe it using AS our Opus if the metar is 300/5 290v305...

WebMaximus, you're a mind reader.  My prior attempts were exactly as you stated, no wonder I couldn't get it to work.  Thanks for your help!

NP, good to hear all is good now!

Hi Richard,

Regarding your statement " . . . Sure...you won't get the shaking head/view turbulence effects found in Opus for example but instead you will get weather that will truely have a very noticable effect on your aircraft...at least that has been my experience. . . ", I'm also enjoying the 'noticable effects' this weather engine is having on the aircraft but in addition also enjoying these effects in combination with EZdok. So if you're looking for the head/view turbulence effects, try EZdok with FSGRW! It's just superb! And I should also say that EZdok is much more than head/view effects; it is, in my opinion, the best camera utility available for FSX (emphasis on camera utility). And if you'd like more information about EZdok or ever needed help setting it up, don't hesitate to send me a personal message.

That's very kind of you JJ!

In some way I do miss the head/view effect of turbulence but still I find the effect FSGRW gives me where I can clearly "feel" how the aircraft is affected by the weather is far more important for the sense of realism. I consider the head/view effect more of a "nice-to-have" type of thing. Maybe I'll look into EZdok, I know it's a very popular add-on and has been for a long while so I'm sure it's good.

I guess the main reason I haven't got it myself is for me EZdok equals setting up lots of different camera views and since I'm using Track-IR and have been for a very long time I don't feel any need setting up lots of different camera views...I prefer to simply move my head into the direction I want to look and that to me also is much more realistic than switching between different camera views.

Richard,

Your well articulated rationale is a good reminder to me that I use many of EZdok's features for movie-making (not that I've made many but enjoyed making those I did prepare). Regarding TIR and setting up cameras, I would say TIR performance is enhanced when used with EZdok while setting up cameras is not the chore some users make it out to be especially when newly created cameras can be saved as 'camera sets' which can easily be applied to similar aircraft with very little adjustments required. In fact, I'm in the process of preparing a draft outline of a video I want to make later this year which will demonstrate many of EZdok's features including the ease with which cameras can be created and modified.

My offer stands if ever you're tempted!

Thanks again, I might very well have a closer look at EZDok becuase I'm always interested in things that can further enhance my experience in FSX and I know many people use EZDok in combination with TIR.

That video you're talking about sounds very interesting, if you remember by the time you have it finished please send me a PM or post in this thread.

Will do for sure Richard.
