May 6, 201313 yr Some companies claim to put out regional scenery but it is just repackaged OSM data that you can get for free. Unfortunately no company I know of as yet has put out regional textures/autogen. This would be awesome if it happens or Laminar improve on regionalization of X-plane (which I hear they are planning). For now though I would recommend taking a look at downloading free photo scenery (nearly all of Europe available). This is actually cooler than it sounds because, X-plane layers the autogen on top and it fits almost perfectly and looks great (especially Alps). Also theres G2XPL (Google to Xplane) which you can unofficially request from the guy who makes the plug-in. However, I cannot get it to work. It captures photo scenery for the whole globe through google maps but you need to start playing around with behind the scenes code to get it to work. I would love if Orbx or someone else was to do regional scenery to fill this big gap!!! Here's a video I made of flying over the Swiss Alps (near where I live)showing off free photo scenery and stock autogen on top:
May 6, 201313 yr Need autogen regionalization like southeast USA, Midwest USA, Interiorwest USA and Canada, Would not go Orbx route takes too long. Think another approach is needed. OSM will never have USA and Canada data like Europe. Like to see stucco houses and clay roofs in the southwest. Wheat towers like North Dakota and Saskchewan have dotted all over that region. Vitural corn fields for Iowa and other Midwest states. The models not hard to create its autogen trying to match up with the region

May 6, 201313 yr Cites/urban/industrial areas need to look more polluted ... Detroit should not like Portland, Oregon. It should like the surface of the moon except with buildings on it ... grass, trees, and happiness should not exist anywhere.
May 7, 201313 yr Detroit is being taken over by nature as grass and wildlife has moved in as people have move out.
May 7, 201313 yr I lived in Detroit for 31 years-it takes a bad rap. Seen lots of its bad parts elsewhere in the world. Now that I live in the San Diego area find it actually more lacking in resemblance in xplane.... Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
May 8, 201313 yr Commercial Member ...as for instance what ORBX pushes out to FSX? Would be interested to know.... I found some photo-based scenery for Italy. Follow this link to check it out. Looks like the developers have an X-Plane 10 update. http://www.x-italy.it/ REX AccuSeason Developer REX Simulations

May 8, 201313 yr Xplane 10 still has artifacts from version 9 I noticed starting to think its not autogen xplane 10 that bad its wrong spot and location. Annonator would be nice for xp10 where commercial buildings are in commerical zones and industrial in industrial zones. Housing stock for regionalization is needed for Arizona, California type housing stocks. Certain items from xplane 9 they should use xp10 some commerical and industrial buildings.
May 8, 201313 yr If you want to annotate, then start with Openstreetmap .... i(commercial / industrial landuse is already officially documented): http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:landuse Then, if there is a halfway reasonable amount of classification info in OSM, it may well be worth a thought to use this information where available. May 9, 201313 yr You know .... updating things in OSM for the sake of the OSM community is a noble idea and all ... but to be honest the only reason for me to even touch OSM is purely for my own ulterior motive of improving X-Plane's scenery. I know Ben's using these annotation tags for water-bodies but I wasn't sure he was using them for cities as well. Do you know if he's planning on using these other zoning annotations in the upcoming dsf recuts?
May 9, 201313 yr You know .... updating things in OSM for the sake of the OSM community is a noble idea and all ... but to be honest the only reason for me to even touch OSM is purely for my own ulterior motive of improving X-Plane's scenery. I'm in the same boat, but I'm always being mindful that I'm "playing in someone else's sandbox". So long as my edits fit the standards and requirements of OpenStreetMap itself AND represent reality, I'm happy. My recent map updates are all beneficial to the entire community anyway - mostly adding water and smoothing/retracing jagged coastlines. (I actually made the top 5 contributors for the day / week yesterday with all the water body and coastline work I've been doing) I know Ben's using these annotation tags for water-bodies but I wasn't sure he was using them for cities as well. Do you know if he's planning on using these other zoning annotations in the upcoming dsf recuts? As Andras said, those landuse tags (residential, retail, industrial) would need significantly more widespread use to be of value in XP. In all the areas I've observed, those types of tags are very rarely used, and usually only utilized in large metro areas. Then again, isn't it the large metro areas which seem to need more delineation between residential, commercial, and industrial? (Shrug) -Greg
May 9, 201313 yr Well, at the moment we don't use those landuse annotations ... but especially the metropolitan annotations are the ones, which might become of good value to X-Plane, as these type of informations are almost impossible to be get from other source (like info about commercial / industrial zones in populated areas). So, I think, they will be an interesting thing in the future (I am already looking at the industrial tag ...maybe they could be used here and there).
