Advice on mesh compatibility

Featured Replies

I'd still go with FSGenesis. Justin has been around the sim community for years and is always responsive to making any adjustments necessary. And to clarify - the anomalies that result after installation of FSG are due to errors in FSX itself. The data used by FSG is accurate, so if FSX has an error, you might see an elevated or sunken airport. When these were reported to Justin, they were corrected quickly.

The landclass and the mesh provide the base for the textures - if that base is not accurate, then what you see may be pretty but not accurate. I can live with the occasional hole in the ground - just as I can live with an occasional CTD or stutter - it comes with the territory. Fortunately I cannot recall the last CTD with FSX and especially P3D.

So, I'd go with FSGenesis hands down. If you are waiting for perfection, find another hobby!  :)

While I respect the work that Justin has put into this hobby, it is simply untrue to state that he has corrected all the errors introduced by using his product.  Lots of airports still on plateaus or in valleys, and other unpleasant side-effects (roads that should be flat which are not, roads on hillsides that run along hillsides, etc.).

Agreed - rereading my post I can see how that is implied but it was not my intention to infer that he fixed them all. And I am sure there are plenty that no one has discovered yet.

Frankly, I don't see a better approach on a global basis. No matter who releases a mesh product, hey are still going to be dealing with FSX built in issues. Many, if not most, can be corrected in advance but other anomalies ave to be located first.

So am I correct in thinking that there will still be issues with some airports such as Alicante where there is some kind of elevation runnign close to the airport? Now my big question is... is it possible to correct these issue easily enough by editing a file or somewhere? Cheers...

My lack of knowledge in the scenery area is showing but I recall that many times someone would issue a file that contained flattening data that would correct a specific area. I would assume that, if one knew the specifics, they could modify the .bgl file and make corrections. It's knowing the correct data that would be the key.

Mmm, thanks Vic. Installing a global mesh that potentially affects every airport in my scenery is a pretty tough call, knowing that by doing so could mean effectively rubbishing a certain number of my airports...

Hi Howard

If you only end up with issues at a couple of airports I may be able to carry out some editing to resolve major issues between the affected airports and the mesh, ive done it for the ones ive created.

Are you around for a trip to WSM tomorrow? I'll be there 12 tel 3, good turn out, better than previous years, text me if your around.

Rich

The problem with mesh addons is that you usually don't see a difference with or without the addon unless you take comparison screenshots. I am 100% certain that I will see a difference between FSX default and FSX with FTX Global so I will buy FTX Global. I am 100% certain I will not see a difference between FSX default and FSX with a mesh addon so I will not buy a mesh addon. ^_^ Simple as that. Addon mesh really isn't mandatory for FTX Global (what a lot of people seem to think).

But of course this is just my opinion. I just reinstalled my PC and I only installed the addons I REALLY like and use. Up to now I haven't installed ANY scenery related addon because the idea of having to install it all makes me sick already. I am hoping FTX Global will be my one stop scenery solution. Well, together with OpenLC.

Sounds like you've never flown with mesh. You will absolutely 100% be able to tell the difference with addon mesh. Maybe not in Florida, but in the mountains, it's night and day.

Howard, I have all the FSGlobal packages, and all the UTX/GEX regions. Some airports, mostly small ones, could be sunk or raised, but with FSGlobal you get included an Airport Elevation Tool included if you want to correct an airport. I have never had any issues with airports from UK2000, FSDT, FlyTAmpa or Aerosoft though, and I have a few :)

Very happy with this setup.

Hi Morten, wow, an elevation tool? Now e're talking! Sounds like that bit of software is a done deal!

Yeah, actually I have not used it but check out the website, search FSGlobal and you'll find it. It is a long time since I bought it but I know the tool is included, it is DVD only because of the size of the data. Took 7 hours to install and one night defragging. And no need to unistall GEX/UTX before FSGlobal, I confirmed that with the developer :)

Seriously?

Where do you fly? Exclusively in Flattenland?

LOL The thing is: when I don't install mesh, I see mountains. When I do install mesh (@dcgator29 which I have done in the past otherwise I wouldn't have posted what I posted), I also see mountains... Yes, they probably are more detailed but I don't really notice the difference until I actually compare screenshots. It's not that Norway without addon mesh is completely flat, or something like that...! Since I don't know how the mountains look in real life, I don't care is some tops aren't exactly as they should be...

I think one area where you can really see the difference between default and addon mesh is when you are flying over small islands. With default mesh the small islands are completely flat, whereas with a good addon mesh the small islands will have a much more realistic look.

This becomes very important with scenery like my freeware BC PNW Lighthouses project, where a number of lightstations are located on small islands. For this reason I designed the scenery to be used with Orbx's FTX NA Blue Pacific Northwest installed; as the good mesh allowed the lightstations to appear much as they do in the real world.
