July 19, 201312 yr I assume you've flown the whole fleet of 330's? I've flown the whole fleet HAHA, not just the A330s... ^_^ Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.

July 19, 201312 yr What about that 757 Aer Lingus is supposedly getting for the Toronto service, or am I dreaming? Ah, no, not those, but we haven't gotten them yet, not till November/December, and then it'll be operated by Aer Lingus Pilots on secondment to Air Contractors. I'll be sticking with my A330 I'm pretty sure as the B757 crews will be based in SNN. Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.

Its awfully quiet during the winter, and such a shame to see as it has a lot of potential. Guess its not the most central of airports, used to love seeing the Concorde do some circuits out there! sure do miss that girl!

Oh no sorry, the Toronto service is from Dublin, but the crew will be based in SNN. SNN will still be awfully quiet in winter unfortunately, you just can't make money from there in the low season... Saw an image the other day of an SNN timetable from 20 or so years ago and amazing to see all the flights operated by Russian airlines to a wide wide range of destinations in the US, far more than could ever be hoped for again... If was some airport back in it's day, despite being despised by every transatlantic pilot in EI... Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.

I was out in Shannon last year to see all the Malev aircraft and the Chinese VP come in. I came across an old Soviet Volga Dnepr small hangar. Its out in the East side by the big old 747 hangar (aka the Industrial area) It looks abandoned since the early 90's - but it goes to show how big Aeroflot and all those Soviet airlines were in SNN back in the day. I believe its a cheap place to park aircraft? It has a pretty nice aircraft maintenance hangar too. My cousin used to work there and he took me around the facility with about three/four aircraft in there, I sat in the cockpit on a stool of a completely stripped out 319 of German Wings, its pretty amazing to see an aircraft in such a state, as a passenger they're usually all nice and clean, this one looked like a cargo hold. It was such a great experience.
July 19, 201312 yr Here we go: In other news: Regards, Ró. Ro, How come they got US per inspections at Shannon Airport? I actually never seen that before. I never had that at EGLL.
July 19, 201312 yr Ro, How come they got US per inspections at Shannon Airport? I actually never seen that before. I never had that at EGLL. Yeh, we have pre-clearence in both Dublin and Shannon, only two airports in the world outside of North America that have it. Basically means we arrive into the USA as a domestic flight. As to why we have it, I'm not sure. Others have asked like Dubai and Abu Dhabi but were refused, we lobbied and got it. I suppose owing to the large Irish diaspora in the USA and the large volume of flights between Dublin/Shannon and the US. Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqPr_sByA8Q Regards, Ró. July 19, 201312 yr http://www.aaib.gov.uk/cms_resources.cfm?file=/S5-2013%20ET-AOP.pdf I think this is the final report. Not sure. According to that report, the Emergency Locator Transmitter(ELT) is a probable cause. I guess it's probably right, as they made two safety recommendations.
July 19, 201312 yr Yeh, sorry, I'd posted the report on the previous page but I guess the thread has drifted wide off course in the mean time... My bad... Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.

July 19, 201312 yr It's amusing how quickly the tone of this thread changed. I have been sitting back with my popcorn enjoying all the speculation and Dreamliner bashing. Then the ELT, a innocuous and seemingly harmless device that's installed in thousands of aircraft gets the blame and the conversation quickly changed to the weather. Haha. Thanks for the entertainment. I guess it's time to move along and wait for the next sensationalized Dreamiliner event. Nevermind, Let's start talking about how we need to ground them now for have such horribly engineered boost pumps. /sarcasm Chuck Chuck Biggins
