July 18, 201312 yr Interesting: http://www.flightradar24.com/JAL7 B787 returning back to Boston due to "aircraft maintenance" (quote from Japan Airlines' flight status page). Apparently a fuel pump malfunctioned, or at least they got an ECAM action on a fuel pump. Dumped fuel then landed back and is now parked at the gate: Looks like every time a 787 even just coughs and the media is going to be reporting it... Oh yes, you guys up there are very climatised to "cooler" conditions than us Aussies! I have been known to see 45C on my ICE display of the GT46C diesel locomotive I was driving, and in my own car in the Pilbara have seen 48C outside.... At Marble Bar it has reached 52C sometimes there. Apparently the record is 55C at Marble Bar. Bare exposed rock with high levels of metal heats up fast! That is why it gets so hot up there in summer. But at night in winter, ouch, it is freezing inland! Freezing as in 0C or less..... 30 degrees is just pleasant for us....... I suppose it is 10-12 degrees higher than there what you find pleasant...... Ouch! No, 30 degrees is highly unpleasant for us...below -2 is quite cold, -2-3 is cold, 3-8 is cool, 8-12 is mild 12-15 is pleasant, 15-18 is warm, 18-23 is hot and and then 24+ is too hot, go hide in the freezer... We don't function well in this heat at all, we've a very small range of temperatures up here we're designed for...  I can't imagine what'd happen if we had 45 degrees, you'd find every man woman and child either under a rock or in water, we just don't do high temperatures. I don't know how yee can function in temperatures like that... Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.
July 18, 201312 yr But the emergency locator transmitter uses lithium-manganese batteries. I think LiMnO2 is one of several chemistries used in various so-called "lithium-ion batteries"? But I think the electrolyte used might also be a consideration as well as cathode. scott s. .

[can't wait for the freezing winter]
July 19, 201312 yr You must be melting up in Dublin!? The temperatures in Ireland ATM are too much lol! [can't wait for the freezing winter] I'd love just a day of cold frosty weather, that'd be lovely right now, these hot nights are getting ridiculous. I left our bedroom window open last night because of the heat and a magpie managed to fly into our bedroom at 5 in the morning for goodness sakes, if this keeps up we're gonna need air conditioning or something... :( Like I said, there's something very wrong when it's warmer in Ireland than in the Canaries... Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.

I hope this isn't global warming kicking in as I can see me moving out if it is (Greenland looks nice from above) ^_^
July 19, 201312 yr I hope this isn't global warming kicking in as I can see me moving out if it is (Greenland looks nice from above) ^_^ I wonder if I could make it as an ice pilot, that job seems mighty appealing right about now... ^_^ Rónán O Cadhain.
July 19, 201312 yr I wonder if I could make it as an ice pilot, that job seems mighty appealing right about now... ^_^ Hard work, I'm sure you (automated) Airbus pilots would find it awful!
July 19, 201312 yr Well I'm not work shy so I'd say it'd be grand... Nice and cool... :p0503: Just so long as it has a nice glass cockpit with all the latest Avionics I'd manage just fine. THey do have all the latest avionics right? Rónán O Cadhain.
July 19, 201312 yr Now what was I saying about lithium ion batteries? Two major companies both put faith in them to fly. Well it just proves my point. Lithium ion batteries should be banned (apart from iPhones etc) from commercial use on board aircraft. I don't see why the risk of landing at a diversion and you are one hundred or more minutes away on ETOPs, so you either ditch or end up like the Halifax Swissair flight......... Arrrrgh. Ready...FIRE...aim! Again!! No, it proves nothing. There's a HUGE difference between the physics, usage, and history of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery and the non-rechargeable lithium manganese dioxide cell. LiMnO2 batts have a solid safety record and a long history of use in billions of consumer devices such as smoke and CO detectors, watches and other digital devices, as memory backup batteries etc. All we know at this point is that the device that caught fire was powered by a LiMnO2 cell. A short circuit in the ELT itself is at least as likely to be at fault, rather than an internal fault of the battery. July 19, 201312 yr Irish people stop functioning at anything over 18... I'm the same anything over 10* C is way too hot for me but thankfully winter is on its way back to Chicago. Alex Jevdic KORD/KHOT/KPWKA<380 love at first flight
July 19, 201312 yr Like I said in another thread... Where I live in Canada -40 is not a rare winter occurrence,-50 with wind is bad though. In the summer though, today actually, it reaches +30, I'd say our average summer temperature is 25 or so while our average winter temperature is probably -25 to -28ish, January and February are quite cold. Even though I was born in Canada I seem to have quite a bit of South African blood inherited from my mom, so I do quite well with the heat, but the cold I could do without. Most people that are born in this area would probably take -20 over +30 though.... Lee
