ENB mod and fxsweet no go

Featured Replies

Hey guys,  After countless ctd issues with ENB and fxsweet I have gave up on them.  Is there anything else a guy can do to help the washed out look in FSX?  I have gone into my Nvidia control panel and adjusted my vibrance, contrast, and brightness settings.  That did help quite a bit but still not to my liking.  I also use Shade and that has seemed to darken the VC to much.  Once I get the VC to my liking everything else looks to bright and over saturated.  Anything else I can try?

That's strange, I'm using SweetFX and haven't had a single crash.

After playing around with ENB for years and SweetFX more recently, I'm convinced it's overall more realistic without either. Yes, in some situations it looks FAR better with one of ENB/SweetFX, however, you then see the horribly exacerbated banding that occurs at both dawn, dusk and during fog (because of the low-res 32x32 sky-textures) and I instantly turn it off.

I actually notice a slight colour palette difference with P3D over FSX and I think P3D has pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Ya I used sweetfx ( sorry spelled wrong in my original post ) for about a year with no issues.  Then I moved to dx10 for a few months then went back to dx9 and now I get CTD's everytime I switch between full and windowed mode.  FSX is a weird beast.

Tried ENB again today (the 24hr version from the REX forums) and I just don't like it.

I keep wanting to as it looks so great in videos people make but on my machine I just can't find one that satisfies.

I too gave up on both EFB and SweetFX and was able to find almost the same effect by adjusting the settings for my LED TV.

Do a Google search for my nickname and SweetFX and you should be able to find a post where I wrote about this and what settings I adjusted. If you can't find it let me know and I'll try to find it.

I tried both of those as well Matt and had the same problems.  I use FXAA and it works great for me.  It has a nice handy to use interface as well.  Here's a link if you want to check it out:

Thanks alot Chris.  I downloaded and first impressions are good.  Would u share your settings?

What ctd error(s) do you get?

Two things:

1. Make sure gpu drivers are latest.
2. Check if you have this windows update installed: KB2670838. If you have it, remove it, it's causing d3d ctds! particularly often with dx10, but also happens in dx9!

I never had a ctd because of sfx. I mean, had.. because that KB. Since it was uninstalled it's a smooth operation, both dx9 and dx10.

If that doesn't help, just post the appcrash details.

You can use FXAA with sweetfx, just change the SMAA dll with the supplied FXAA one, enable FXAA in settings.ini and you're good to go.

Sure.  I don't have any major tweaks to it.  I just played with the sliders for a few minutes and found settings I liked in the meantime.  I may change them down the road, but heres the 4 boxes I have selected:

1)Anti Aliasing...FXAA Quality set to 3 (all others at minimum)

2)Sharpen...Pre Sharpen Power set to 3, Post Sharpen set to 2 (all others at minimum)

3)Sepia....color tone set to Auburn with both sepia and grey power set to minimum (gives me a nice color tweak especially at sunrise & sunset)

4)HDR...HDR Power & HDR Radius set to minimum

I haven't really looked into the settings in depth.  I suppose you could probably create a wild looking setup with all the options it has.  There may be a website somewhere with some examples, but you can try mine or adjust as you like.  The PAUSE/BREAK key is your on/off switch.  Under graphics settings in FSX don't forget to uncheck the anti-aliasing box to get FXAA to work.

I didn't know that Adi, thanks.

This is interesting. Just checked and found that I do have this update installed. However currently my FSX seems very stable so I don't want to mess with it for no reason but I'll keep this one in mind should I run into any future CTD problems.

That KB is a general d3d update. There were complaints on steam forums that it causes ctds in other games too. It's not fsx specific so if you uninstall it, nothing will happen. After uninstalling, choose to reboot now. If you choose "later", chances are the KB will stay, so you must do that one right away and then ofc, verify in CP that it went away.

One thing that comes to my mind thinking about removing this update, don't you think it could be a problem not having it installed if new driver versions for your gfx card (if you choose to install them) assume it's installed?
