NickN seems to be totally mistaken... ;)

Whoever reaches the level of stature of either of these two giants in this "industry" may (or may not) be qualified to pass judgment on Nick or John and their work.

Anyone here who thinks they have attained such lofty standards, go for it, and we will take a vote on whether you qualify.

I was gonna post this in "one" of the other threads - im sure everyone who has slated him, has at one point either "trolled" simforums, or has had the pleasure of his experience, and probably will continue to do so.

often excessive enthusiasm and then tribalism kick in

Tribalism is a good word for it; I haven't seen so much standing by your man since Tammy Wynette was in the charts.

Again, I just don't understand the glee with which some people seem to greet what they see as the imminent demise of GEX. Competition is good for us, the buyers. Less competition is bad. I'm not a big fan of <a certain aircraft add-on company>, but I certainly wouldn't want them to disappear. Having more sellers in the market is good for buyers and good for quality.

If I switched to FTXG tomorrow and uninstalled my GEX stuff, I still wouldn't want GEX to disappear, or NickN for that matter. Such an attitude makes no sense at all. By the same token, I might never buy FTXG, but I'll always be glad that it, and Orbx, are there.

Anyway, I have products by both and I'm very happy with them.

"NickN seems to be totally mistaken"

Is it just me or is there something wrong with the way this

statement is worded?

I saw this as intemperate attack by one commercial developer on an other for obvious reasons.

It seems that NickN cannot seem to realize that competition happens, and the best way to fight it, is to have the better product. Undermining a competitors product does not make people want to buy yours, it just makes them confused. If NickN were to come out with GEX V2, and it was better than Global, everyone would buy it. Instead there are threads like this.

It is the way of the world, not just Flight Sim.

I am a parts manager at a Nissan dealership here in town. If my competitors didn't offer specials, discounts....and such, do you think I would?

The same can be said for our product. If Nissan had no competition, no reason to raise the bar, do you think they would? Nope, we would still all be riding........The Datsun Type 15.

While I own FTXG, I also own GEX. I switched to global, so what, I personally like it better. Now....if Nick comes out with GEX 2.0, that just knocks the socks off FTXG, guess what.....I will buy it just as fast as I bought Global. As a consumer, I am not loyal to anything other than what fits my needs/wants....plain and simple.

Although I agree with the whole market forces analysis, I think the flight sim community operates more like a dysfunctional family than an open market. Dysfunctional because Daddy left Mommy for a whole bunch of younger better looking women with more money (he's paying for that now, the chicken come home to roost!) with a whole bunch of children that had to get along and all it takes is for one of those children to step out of line and the whole family will fall apart and Mommy will die of a broken heart.

Daddy = Microsoft

Mommy = FSX

Children = Developers

Getting along = SDK

But there's hope!

Mommy meet another guy.

And he is just as rich and famous as Daddy was.

But a lot of the children don't like him but some of them love him

only thing is that the grandchildren all seem to think he will be as big a ###### as granddad was.

Other Guy = Lockheed Martin

Grandchildren = use

Please don't sue me anyone.

I know freedom of speech is dead

but I am just an uneducated poor boy who knows no better!

Except the other guy must have met Mommies sister.

Other Guy = Lockheed Martin

Mommies Sister = ESP

I see both sides of this story being a dev myself, and the route to progress is to challenge and create new ways of doing things. The way to stability and who creates the bible of that stability is what's at the root cause of the emotions that have been released to date. It's wrong to cast judgment on either side without looking to what the future of any change might bring. How that change is controlled and who controls it.

I've tried to be vague on this matter and those in the know will understand and for others it may go whizzing across the sky which is where most of us like to be.

Regardless of how much of what NickN said is true, it is how he is presenting the info. In a relatively small community it is IMO not cool to go online and bash another developer. He makes potentially libelous statements, equating FTXG and other OrbX products to malware. He and Orbx have a contentious history going back for years. He should have presented the facts and left his personal feelings out of it. I don't care how much he has given to the Flight Sim community, it does not give him, or anyone, the right to attack in such a manner.

Say's it all!

This is like watching YouTube and just going off the related videos. It just ends up in the crazy part of deep deep Internet. We are still a flight sim community right?

And once again we come down to the fact that FTXG, as released, makes some changes to core FSX files that will cripple certain parts of another landclass texture product (e.g. GEX) that relies on the FSX SDK being followed. Any product comparisons made under those circumstances ARE NOT FAIR.

Those of us who are aware of and understand these changes can fix things. Until an uninstaller is available or uninstall instructions made available and promoted with reasonable visibility (say as a sticky post) most people will not really appreciate this FACT.

Does anyone think there's a level playing field at the moment as far as FTXG and GEX are concerned, given the above?

I have bought most of Orbx's products from day one plus all the GEX regions. I also happen to owe Nick a debt of gratitude for all the information he has shared over many years regarding both PC hardware and FSX. There are not many people who really know their stuff like Nick does and spend the time and effort to share it.

FTXG and GEX do the same exact thing-replace default textures.

You cannot use both at the same time. It is one or the other.

Holger S. of OrbX , who I respect a hell of a lot more then NickN, has posted exactly what changes are made. Original files are backed up. An uninstaller is on the way.

Will some compatibility issues occur with other products, probably. Orbx has also stated their willingness to work with other devs to fix any issues that may pop up.

Orbx is not the first or only company to have fsx products that may have compatibility issues.

Nick has been complaining about this since the first Orbx release of FTX Au.

The gentlemen doth protests too much, methinks.
