...that relies on the FSX SDK being followed.

Does anyone think there's a level playing field at the moment as far as FTXG and GEX are concerned, given the above?

I see you over getting your hardware tips, that's OK. But to continue the SDK theme is really confusing for me. Not that I know anything about the SDK...

So if the SDKs allow for the creation of a new lclookup.bgl file, how is THAT not following the SDKs? You are aware that new lclookup.bgl files were being made as far back as 2007, aren't you?

You might like installers and uninstallers, but I don't. Maybe you're aware, as you indicate a familiarity, that there's a well known add on that disables default files so that the product can install modified (default named) files. And then should you decide to uninstall this add on (which I cannot name) it proceeds to uninstall the default named files that it put in and the renamed (original) default files. So you're left with no important files for certain areas and good luck trying to fly there. Where's the outrage about this well known vendor screwing up default files on it's install/uninstall? And you want it all automated for you, because there's never a chance it could go wrong? Good luck with that!

And while I'm not a fan of either parties in this discussion, I will say I haven't seen a mass of people clamoring for information on how to rid their computer of their latest purchase. Where are all these people?

After you're decrying the change to default files by developers, maybe you'd like to download my Hawai'i wind turbines and go check them out on Maui and The Big Island? It looks a whole lot better before a developer appropriated the default texture for DIRT and turned it into something else, all so they could use that texture in a different area. So now any developer who had ever utilized the DIRT texture now would have funny looking scenery, all because a payware developer felt entitled to use it as best serves THEIR interest, not the community as a whole.

As respects to your second quoted comment, it's called competition and innovation. Sit around and tell people how great you are and you might see the competition cruise right by on the road to success! I'm unable to really go into any detailed information, but I'm hoping in a few days to see if the fruits of my labor will yield results. Why did I labor so much? Because the competition sat around offering excuses and expecting the customers to accept it as gospel. If they had tried to innovate even a little bit or even to get down to manually making things better, I would have never spent all the time on my projects. But they didn't and I did and in my book that's called competition and is a fair comparison of products.

Good post Lance.

As for the “core” files issue, it is as old as FSX and its SDK’s

Guess who wrote this in reference to those FSX files back in 2008?

Warning Part I: Can ‘o worms to follow, thar be dragons here so sail on at your own risk, mate.

Warning Part II: This is no endorsement of making the modifications shown here, this is simply information transmittal.

A few FSX default files that developers and tweakers tend to “mod”, with some ( brief ) descriptions:

And this in reference to the lclookup.bgl

As part of Aces I cannot advocate either approach, but each has merits in its' turn.

And this

Note 5: thanks to John and Nick for dialoging with me on the lclookup issues to make sure I accurately stated both sides.

The key word being DIALOGING!

(Sadly some of those links in Phil's Blog are now broken and I lost them references.)

I recognize JV’s and Nick’s plus many other guys’ (won’t mention names in fear of forgetting someone)  contributions to Flight Simulators.

But I’m with whoever makes FSX a more plausible/enjoyable Simulator, if that means rewriting the whole thing I’d say: Let it be. After all, since MS dismissal of Flight Simulators WE users & developers are on our own, together.

For goodness sake; Buy whatever you want,  enjoy your hobby and let others enjoy it too.

Let me start my post by saying that FTXG is VERY good visually and my post is in no way to inflame this discussion, I think that seeking real and truthful information should be the goal of any forum regardless of whose side one may stand or what ever products they want or don't want to buy.

What I don't get about this thread here is why nobody started a thread at simforum asking Nick to explain himself if you (we) think he's in the wrong and he's trying to run his mouth because he's not happy about Orbx  taking a part of his market, should we not ask him to explain himself, are we all not seeking truthful information?

Or why is it that nobody challenged him on what he wrote, regardless of him being rough on the edge sometime (guilty myself) I'm sure he would love for all of you (us) thinking he's wrong to challenge him on it, I'm sure there is some great developer's mind (as good as he is) here at Avsim who can do that, why not taking this golden opportunity to seek or give the best information possible?

These thread may help understand or shed some light on his motive...  http://www.simforums.com/Forums/answered-wow-i-almost-bought-ftxg_topic46776.html

We see link from Flight1 (and other developers) being posted here at Avsim about their products because we are all seeking as much information as possible before buying a product from these companies, that in my opinion should be the primary gold of a forum like Avsim as much as helping simmers with their FSX add on or hardware problems.

I had a very good dialog with Word Not Allowed.

That's nice.

Sorry boys and girls,

Word Not Allowed does not post here either by means of first, or second parties of recently arrived departed brethren... :spiteful:

His opinions or words to that effect, are available on his site, perhaps  :diablo:  occasionally quoted or linked to by various secondary search engines, but not by class acts like Avsim.

Please read my disclaimer here post # 7 http://forum.avsim.net/topic/416325-alainneedle1/  this is all in good fun.

You realize that all of his posts about Global have been locked right after he posts, so there is no questioning possible, it is just the NickN is right, which he is not right now.

I have to agree with you on the fact that his "global thread"  he started himself are locked, I think (and I may be wrong) that the only other thread started by somebody else on this subject was locked because it was answered, and that's the first link I posted above.

I think he would answer who ever would start a thread over there seeking information on the in and out about FTXG as he already did with Rich 56, who ever seek more info just need to try and see.

Oops!, I did not know I could not post what was said between him and Orbx, I should have not mentioned his name, my bad....

Please guys do not ban me again for my ignorance...  on Word Not Allowed.

I lost a lot of respect for NickN and his Flight1 flavoured rant,

FTXG is a competitor of GEX so why would one try and help the other??

And saying that FTXG is going to kill off other developers was just plain nonsense and the whole article came across to me to be the same sort of scare tactics and influential writing you see in today's media..

Cheers Josh Cliff

Thou art forgiven, rise up and walk "Sir Allen Needles1"

so where is all the righteous rage over the fact that FScene has no uninstaller and no automatic backup of core fsx texture files?  Is it perhaps because he doesn't see Fscene as much as a threat as FTXG?  Even GEX itself does not restore, or offer to restore your original fsx textures when you run his uninstaller programs,  there is a short blurb in the GEX manual that you need to run the interface first, but I don't remember the uninstaller telling the user explicitly that GEX textures are still present in your FSX installation after the program is uninstalled,  which by the man's own arguments is a bad thing...

Jeroen, at almost 6000 posts, I believe you should know better than this.

This many posts give you more than just credibility in this community, they force upon you responsibility as well as people, (including myself) look to you for proper advice and knowledge .

From what I have seen from you in regards to Orbx forces me to believe that you are their mouthpiece somehow, even though I know it is not the case.

I see your opinions, and am neither with, nor against them in the sense that I could not in a few lifetimes comprehend the ins and outs of programming and such, and understand that you are very passionate about them.

I do however know that Nick (your public enemy #1), has been a real and sincere help to the community for many many years, and has offered plenty of advice (free of charge) to many simmers as myself, and in this day and age this is just incredible.

I own and enjoy his GEX series, and do not (Personally, and at this point) see a need to change to another vendor (Again, my personal opinion).

I do not mind, nor care if people choose a new competing product, and actually applaud it as it forces people to become more creative and that is good for our community and myself.

As far as Orbx goes, I have a lot of their products, and use them happily, and look forward to new ones to add to my collection, so I do not see them as a villain her either.

I understand that you are excited by what Nick, or John may have said, but I urge you not to turn this into a cat fight with emotions.

To make clear my point, since the introduction of fsx, I have had to become an expert (Pathetically inadequate) at system building, optimizing and overclocking, and so on only to find that I had to choose between too many of this, and and too few of that so I could get better FPS's, or smoother scenery, and so on.

We are a small community, and these kind of battles do not help in anyway especially since both sides have valid points, and will only scare people off long term.

Nick has his opinion, and you have yours, and if I learned one thing here, it is that both could be right and wrong at the same time.

Take DX10 for an example, some offer advice on using it, while others say that it only delays the onslaught of serious issues.

He gave his opinion on his site, and you gave yours already in a previous post (that I am aware of).

I believe that is more than enough, don't you?

If it turns out that he is "More Correct" than you are because perhaps he knows more of this or that, then what?

Do you give up simming, and posting all together because you may have been wrong?

I sure hope not, because I spent, and still do, quite a bit of time on these forums learning from knowledgeable people like you who are more than willing to waste their time on solving my ignorance in many an issue.

I love simming, and I love asking questions (yes, I even asked TABS about wxr and got a decent enough explanation to stop asking) and getting explanations and help, heck and even giving out (horrible) advice when I think I know what I am talking about (lol).

You will prove him wrong, and he will prove you wrong, and I believe both of you to be right in the end so now what?

P.S. Sorry for the long post.

Waleed N

waleed, thanks for your long post. Let me start by acknowledging that I indeed certainly am NOT Orbx's mouthpiece...!!! I am happy with FTXG and their choice to create FTX Norway South in the near future but I also certainly posted things on Avsim that didn't actually please the Orbx guys... let that be clear from the start.

Secondly: NickN isn't my public enemy #1. Not at all. Okay, I can't say I like the way he states things as if he is the absolute authority on all things FSX (and that you are an utter moron if you don't follow his advice to the letter) but I can see through that.

About this topic: I was (how shall I put it) merely having fun during a few days off I had... I didn't expect this topic to still be live after almost two weeks...! And I certainly did not expect a few of the more serious replies!

Concerning the question what happens if it turns out NickN was right after all. Well, that won't happen. Because he was wrong and mistaken. The 'problem' here is that NickN has edited and altered his original post so whatever he is saying NOW makes a bit more sense (still not completely imho!) but at the time I started this topic he simply WAS mistaken about the FTX installer not creating backups of the core FSX files. This has nothing to do with opinions but it has everything to do with facts. So if someone starts to read this topic only NOW and then goes of to NickN's forum to see what he has to say, he or she will get a completely wrong impression of it all.

But let me immediately add to this that I've made a complete fool of myself on the internet more times then I can remember so even if NickN turns out to be right somehow, I don't mind at all if he shouts it out loud on his forum: I would probably even enjoy his rantings about me. Just as NickN doesn't seem to mind what people say about him, so don't I.  ^_^ Nothing is better than being able to make fun of yourself and laugh about your mistakes.

Finally I do have to say that I do slightly regret the tone I set (or however you say that in English, which isn't my native language): I regret adding the smiley to the topic title. I wanted to remove it after I posted my post but found out you can't edit topic titles. Maybe I was having a bit TOO much fun. ^_^ But I don't regret making clear that NickN was mistaken and by doing so warn people to not take his post seriously (because that might have resulted in people feeling forced to reinstall FSX without ANY reason!). And in the end I think that compared to NickN's tone of voice my post was very, very mild...

Guys,

As I explained in my post above we should not take side because we like a product or because we don't but we should seek the truth with ALL products put on the market by ALL developers before of after buying it, period, we should not be scared of asking.

Since nobody is welling (for their own reasons) to post at simforum I will, I'll ask Nick all the hard questions you are all posting here (I would do the same at Orbx but I'm banned), I don't care if he like me or not after that but I'll be right to the point, no skating around the puck.

That remind me of another guy, Simon Evans, who he (for some of you) may be rough on the edge and may not like his style or the way he write but the guy is right on target when he post in his column, and as Mathijs said one day (I do not remember exactly the words he used) "Simon is telling simmers what we can't as a company".

So let me go over there and ask Nick the right questions, I'll report back as to if he answered me or not and if he does I'll post the link.

It seems I have 2 MOMMIES  and I don't remember my Daddy, he left so long ago.

Mommy 1 : FSX

Mommy 2 : P3D

However, neither of my Mommies will tell me anything about their relationship,  so I am just a mixed up Kid, wondering what the world is coming to, and what sort of future I have.

Man that is pretty bad!!! What a terrible family you come from.

And to make matters worse you bear a striking resemblance to a Chimpanzee!

That cant be any fun at all! :LMAO:  :Monkey:

Jeroen, thank you for your kind reply, a lesson in my book to all who think attacks are the way to go as opposed to civilized discussions.

I apologize sincerely to to you and all here as my frustration lies more with all the "Are we there yet", and "you owe me" posts.

Too much hate and anger, and very little precious kindness and as far as patience goes, you can forget that ever existed.

As far as your English goes, it is far better than a lot of native speakers believe me.
