This has nothing to do with this forum, I just want to get this out of my system. Thanks for putting up with this. I just accidentally deleted every single one of my FSX backups, Aircraft/Airports/Scenery/Everything! Including XP10! Of course I did this by a failed partitioning idea! But I was in the process of restarting a FSX reinstall for a different purpose! I've lost everything, mind you I just need to go through and redownload all of it, which should take like 5 days total, 150Mb/s connection, but I have to remember everything I had! This sucks!

I wouldn't mind betting that 10 minutes beforehand, you said to yourself "My! FSX has never looked better"

Sorry to hear that, but next time make copies on dvd,and then make duplicates of them again.

I have about 3 backups of the NGX in some shame or form around the house

Oh man, I feel for you mate, that is a major bummer. I dread the day I will be there... I have a frequent Acronis image from the last 100% good drive though.

What I will do for my next fresh install is to start a log, I'll write down each and every little step I do so it will be easier to reconstruct.

I've been doing that for years, for the OS, flightsim stuff and music stuff. My logs are quite detailed and they really save me HOURS whenever I need or want to reinstall everything. Having all my software and downloads organized neatly also helps a lot.

BTW Tommy, not trying to sound mean, but it seems you didn't have an actual backup...? If you ruined your 'backup' you should still have your original files... and since you don't seem to have those you apparently ruined the original downloads, which is something else than a backup. Well, you know it by now but just to warn others: you should never try to do something like paritioning without making a backup first.

Anyway, good luck getting it all downloaded and installed again!

I had a similar problem about 3 years ago, except it was my NAS that failed when I was in the process of moving. Lost everything (not only FS) as I hadn't created backups of the NAS yet (had the drives, just waiting to get settled into the new place). A cheap backup solution is to pick up a 2TB WD Passport drive and keep copies of everything on it. For added security, pick up a second one, and keep it off-site, rotating them around. It's a cheap solution.

Of course after the months it took me to get everything re-assembled, I'm a bit paranoid now. My primary 4TB NAS rsyncs to a separate NAS (different brand in case a firmware update in one causes issues), with everything backed up to an external 4TB HDD, and finally for good measure, most important stuff backed up to the cloud with CrashPlan.

Also, one thing I started doing about 5 years ago was to get my system (OS, programs, and FS) just they way I want it (with necessary tweaks, and everything configured properly), then image it with your image utility of choice (I use Acronis True Image). Keep a copy of that image on your back-up drives as well. Now, when you decide after awhile that it's time for a fresh FS install, simply re-install the image and your back to a clean slate (I keep a log of changes I've made, things I've added since the last base image).

And I bet just like me you put them in a very safe place, will that safe place be remembered if needed though, I made another just to be sure and keep it with at my friends place, (doesnt even use a comp so im safe with that )

Ouch. Sorry to hear that friend. Go buy a couple 1TB external USB drives (about 70-80 bucks each). Make a directory called FSX Payware and then put all your addons in subdirectories under it. Make sure each payware subdirectory has everything needed. For example:

FSX Payware

-- Aerosoft A320 Extended (main program and all order/serials etc here)

-- -- Documents and Tutorials

-- -- Service Pack and Updates

-- -- Repaints and Liveries

-- Aerosoft Twin Otter Extended (main program and all order/serials etc here)

-- -- Documents and Tutorials

-- -- Service Pack and Updates

-- -- Repaints and Liveries

-- PMDG NGX (main program and all order/serials etc here)

-- -- Documents and Tutorials

-- -- Service Pack and Updates

-- -- Repaints and Liveries

Make another directory called:

-- System Drive Image Backup (Acronis or other drive imaging file here)

Backup on both drives, keep up-to-date and sleep soundly.

Damn! Thanks guys, to answer a few questions, yes it was my backup (trying to partition it for something) - - I do appreciate your support, and yes I did say, "This is the best FSX has every looked!" It's a good thing my FSX.cfg was saved on a separate backup! I will just deal with it and move on!

why not try with those programs that recover files, not to recover fully but at least to see if you can get a list of what you had

Padolamap, thanks for the reply I think I got a list of everything, thanks for telling me though!

It's to late, thanks so much for trying to help, I will keep this tool around for next time this happens! ;)

I did something similar not long ago. I intended to format a USB thumb drive, but I was tired and accidentally reformatted my entire FS drive. Did not even realize what I had done until a week later when the wife and kids were going to be out of town, and I came home from work thinking I can have an all night FS-fest and... well... it was not pleasant.

I hear you my friend, it really is a bad feeling huh.

I guess this will turn into a topic where we all share our terrible FSX stories! :P
