November 4, 200421 yr Anyone experienced any problems with FS 9 and anti-virus software? Brittany Sventon Virtual Airline Pilot Since 1999 http://www.deltava.org http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002318976142 Atlanta, It's Home
November 4, 200421 yr i've got zone alarm (firewall) and norton anti-virus 2004 running together with fs2004 and except some minor impact on the framerate, there are absolutely no problems with these programs!cheerio!
November 4, 200421 yr I have the latest Norton anti-virus. I always disable it and use end-it-all when I fly. That way the computer is only doing FS9 and nothing else. Works quite well.Lee Lee H i9 13900KF 64GB Ram 24GB RTX 4090
November 4, 200421 yr I use Zonealarm Pro and NOD32 and have no problems... I used to use Nortons and had no problems with that either...
November 5, 200421 yr I run latest Norton anti-virus as well (works well) and not had any problems with FS9, although can be an issue when trying to run certain downloads. As already mentioned, you can turn the program on and off when you want, but save your system to disk just in case!CheersDan
November 5, 200421 yr I'd say most definitely that anti-virus software is an issue with FS9 - particularly in terms of stutters. After a lot of messing about, I am now running FS by pulling the modem plug out of the wall and then using Ken Salter's excellent Autostart to kill everything including anti-virus (Norton in my case) and firewall.Of course, that's not going to work if you want to fly on-line or whatever! It's often difficult to tell what has caused an improvement, but I'm FIRMLY of the opinion of that for me at least, running without anti-virus makes FS much smoother if not actually any faster.
November 5, 200421 yr I have not seen much of a hit in performance with Norton running or disabled. I've installed a removable Harddrive rack and have a dedicated harddrive that I use for flightsim, where their is nothing loaded on it except windows XP and flightsim. I don't even use this harddrive to surf the net with. Actually, I've got FS2004 on one separate harddrive, FS2002 on another harddrive with different operating systems (Win98,XP). Even with just this bare setup, their is not much of a performace difference between my Sims. I do see a big performance hit between windows 98 and XP when running FS2002. Windows98 far outperforms windows XP on my rig. My one harddrive that has all kinds of junk running in the background (the one with all my programs installed Northon etc, and the one I use for surfing the net with) performs almost as well as my bare bones harddrive dedicated to flgithsim (both running XP). I used different hardware profiles, turned off many services, and have not not seen much of any performce increase by doing so. Tweaking is fun, but I have yet to find something that really works (except running a 3.2G CPU and high end video card).I'm not in any way saying other people don't have problems with Anti-virus software installed. Everyone has a different setups, differnt drivers, different joysticks, etc etc etc. I'm just sharing with you what I've seen with my setup.
November 5, 200421 yr I'm runnin Norton AntiVirus (full system works) with Norton Internet Security Works Pro with no prob's at all.Ed :-spacecraft Just had to use this smiley (well cool) LOL
November 5, 200421 yr I've had no problems with Anti-virus and FS9 so far, although when on-line it has caused some grief. For example i ran AS2004.5 with all AV programs installed (Norton Anti-virus, Norton Internet Security and default XP security programs), and it worked fine only after uninstalling these programs. Also i tried to download FS approaches yesterday without success, until i did the same as above.Seriously thinking of running FS9 and on-line connection without AV software running (Needless to say am saving my system disk fairly regularly!)., but thats not a big hassle really. So yeah, running AV programs with FS9 has been fine for me until connecting to the internet.Cheers., Dan:) :)
November 5, 200421 yr I use EZTrust antivirus and find my FS stutters like, well an awful lot (frame rates are un affected though). Judging by some of the replies, I think I will try Norton soon as I have some issues with EZ trust.Colin
November 6, 200421 yr This issue has ben discussed before. A search of this forum will yield much info about AV's, including Norton.Greg
November 6, 200421 yr I am using Norton anti-virus and zone alarm as a firewall and have no problems. If I am using a frame rate hungry aircraft I do shut down both for a little gain in performance.Chuck
November 6, 200421 yr The best antivirus for me with minimum resources usage is Panda Platinum.Stelios Stelios Christofides
November 6, 200421 yr Well well well, there was a very good thread a month ago about Norton anti virus here in this forum...do a search. Many good ideas are in it. After reading through that thread, I got rid of Norton 2004 (had the firewall and anti-virus). Norton is a bloated piece of software. While it does a good job, it uses WAY to much computer resources. I have went to Kerio for my firewall and NOD32 for anti-virus. Both work flawlessly and the best part is this: I now use 100MB less than when I had Norton! That my fiends is a lot of resource back for running FS9. My whole computer seems faster without Norton. Search for "Norton" in this forum and you will see the thread. Eric
