Dropped laptop, 20 FPS increase and perfect performance

Featured Replies

Sounds rediculous, but a couple days ago my laptop fell off our ottoman and landed screen side down. Ever since then, this thing has been running fsx perfectly with an average of 30 fps in the NGX.

This is the same laptop that before the drop was getting 3-4 FPS on the ground and averaging 8 in the cruise with the NGX. I used to have to pause on landing to allow the ground textures to catch up with the plane! This is my travel laptop, it is 4 years old.

What happened here? Is it possible this thing came out of the box with some hardware loosely connected or something? I'm at a loss as to how this blatant performance increase could be possible.

Whatever happens, Jacob, we may not be able to pin this tip. ^_^

This is very unlikely when going in the direction of things getting better after dropping it. Far fetched, I could only think of something like a blocked fan which now is free and blowing, therefore preventing any GPU or CPU from thermal throttling. But, as said, that's very far fetched. Could also be just a blocked exhaust, so maybe it was blowing before but only in a kind of recirculation mode. Speculation.

But, seriously, if you ever find out what actually caused the improvement, let us know.

Less seriously. Would you drop it again? :Black Eye:

Sure, a good kick usually mends most things in my house!

If all else fails, a good dropping should fix your problems, or compressed air maybe.

I guess it must have been thermal throttling. Although after I dropped it the system temp was hanging around 54C just idling. I did take it apart and clean out the dust yesterday and now it's about 10C cooler. I never would have imagined such an increase in performance though.

Wow i need to try this!

Jokes, but this could use a good clean. It doesn't do bad for  a 5 year old cheapo HP laptop, i can normally run REX and PMDG 747 locked at 20fps. Maybe i'll buy a can of compressed air some time.

James,

Just make sure ya get the compressed air for electronics with no water content.

What about duct tape? There must be a way to improve FPS with duct tape. Or maybe WD-40?  :P

Seriously though, keeping the computer clean and maintaining airflow is a good idea, especially for laptops.

I clean out my laptop by putting it through the dish washer once and a while. Battery stays fresher that way too. <jk>
