EFB on iPad

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm looking at the Aivlasoft EFB program, but unless it works (and works well) on the iPad, it's a non starter for me.

I don't have a second PC (neither do I have the room for one) therefore the only viable option is via the iPad.

I'm seeing mixed reports on its use with AirDisplay. Can any users of this kind of set up please share their insights?

Many thanks.

couldn't you just grab a second screen and drag it across?(if you cant make it work ipad)

Im also looking at buying it but their forums are loaded with all sorts of problems and it doesn't play well with add on airports..

I have been using the Aivlasoft EFB since the beginning, yes I have used my ipad with AirDisplay. My opinion, it's a Great FSX add-on. BUT using your Ipad as your EFB has its issues, it's not the ideal setup. I would contact Aivlasoft and ask them if there is a ipad app in the works.

However, they have their trial, download it and try it out...

But you might want to look at the new foreflight app for the ipad, its a great EFB for real pilots and it now connects to FSX via wireless router.... If you want the best of both worlds and don,t mind spending the money Foreflight is a great way to go. I think it's about $8.00 a month and it has a trial period too.

Ever since Foreflight ipad app..... started talking to FSX, I haven't looked back.

Don't get me wrong Aivlasoft's EFB IS TOP NOTCH, it's a great add-on, but if you want a real EFB Foreflight is the the way to go on your IPAD.

A second monitor would be the ideal solution but I don't really have space for a second monitor, although I could probably make room for a small one if I tried hard!

My understanding however is that you can't run FSX in full screen mode on a two monitor setup, is this correct? Windowed mode just kills the immersion for me...

go to your task bar. Click a blank spot and then properties and tick auto hide. Your now only stuck with the top bar in FSX, not so bad

You can even hide the title bar if you really must. LINDA has a feature built-in to hide the window frames of the 2d gauge windows and the main FSX frame too if you want, so you end up with a pseudo full screen look.

Cheers, Andy.

Yeah I know you can do that, but still gives you the "FSX" top title bar

Ah, that's interesting, I didn't realise there was anything that could be done about the top title bar. Being able to replicate a full screen look in windowed mode is very appealing, as it would also solve my SFX crashes which only happen full screen. Sorry to be dense, but what is LINDA?!

Is there anything else "special" that has to be done with a two-monitor setup? I would want FSX on the left hand monitor and have other programs such as Navigraph, FSBuild, Firefox etc on the right hand one.

My GPU has two outputs so other than an extra monitor is there anything special that needs to be done to have it working this way, or should it be pretty much plug and play?

But Foreflight appears to be just for North America -- I can't see any sign of anything for the rest of the world. Aivlasoft is world-wide.

Details of what LINDA is can be found at the forum area below, you will also find download details there too, best of all LINDA is freeware, but if you find it useful there is an option to donate if you wish, its not mandatory though. To use Linda you will require a registered version of FSUIPC4, most serious FS users already have that anyway.

Nothing special is required regarding setup of your displays, FS just needs to be in windowed mode instead.

One final thought though for anyone reading this in passing, Linda is an FSX only product.

Cheers, Andy.

Thanks Andy, really helpful.

If LINDA allows me to do what I want to do then I shall certainly make a donation! Damn my FSX addiction, I'm now eyeing up another £100 monitor. Will this hobby EVER let me stop spending?!

plus you have to pay for FSUIPC as well, that EFB is becoming mighty expensive !

I already have FSUIPC 4.9 so all good there!

I'm now considering not using EFB, I mainly wanted it for charts off of the actual PC but I already have an extensive collection of navigraph charts for my add on airports, so using them on a second monitor would be ideal.

Food for thought!

I gave up using the EFB on the ipad. Everytime I clicked in it the sound disappeared from FSX. I could also use the EFB and FSX with a mouse at the same time.

Why don't you buy either of the two EFB's available directly on the iPad appstore:

FS Kneeboard: http://www.inquisitivegraphics.com/FSKneeboard.html

EFB for iPad:    http://fswidgets.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=60

Both allow you to import charts via dropbox. Personally I am using FS Kneeboard although the weather function is quite limited (US-only). But they both do the same thing.

EFB for iPad includes a moving map

FSK includes a nice checklist feature and notepad for writing notes ;-)

I thought it was normal for the sound to stop on fsx if you are running windowed mode then click into another window (ie Firefox)
