new GEX vs FTX Global

Sorry, not nick, If I get a free upgrade that makes the sim better then it was before then I think poeple should know, but your right, at the start I was asking for a comparison not advertising.. In the meantime I googled FTXG and GEX the positive posts for GEX were less than the negative post for Global, thats what google is for. Luckily I had a mate close at hand that was singing GEX's praises. I ahve always been into fotoreal with Bluesky and my PNW is much the same the whole way through.

This upgrade has changed my sim, after 3 mths debating with myself over FTXG because of all the bad publicity and the lack of someone close to check it out myself and the price of buying it  against a free update to a really old GEX that I had bought is a no brainer.

Hopefully I will be as happy with the next purchase, GEX Europe ,as I am with this free upgrade.

Sorry for the confusion, didnt mean to advertise for one product or the other, just glad I got a free upgrade that made a real difference to my flightsim and was happy to pass it on to others that maybe are having the same hesitations I was.

Most have the old GEX already, so why not.

Yeah...there's something fishy about all these "Oh, I don't know anything about GEX or FTX or anything and oh, look...pretty everywhere!!"-types of first time posters

That being said, its a bit harsh judging everyone a secret GEX-agent just because they like what GEX does. TS still have the benefit of the doubt as far as I am concerned

Did you not see the smiley's . it was tongue n cheek. Not directed at the OP personally.

I've collected some info and you folks are free to correct me if I got something wrong.

The 'new' GEX is from January. I'd call that a current product but some of the latest threads make it sound like it came out yesterday and established SP4 for FSX. Indeed, there are enhancements and they come for free. But my impression as a GEX user is that it mainly changed the interface and the way the installation is handled across different regions. Adding, the actual textures also received changes but I could only observe the ones on the artwork.

Even the change-log only lists 'Improvements in color and tone'. Find the link above. So, adding to my observation, I actually doubt that anyone will be able to measure the recently reported fps bumps.

It seems like August of the year 2013 introduced more changes to GEX than the actual product change-log is able to show. This also seems to apply to the official forum where.. certain threads are now pinned. Of course, pinning threads makes sense if you want to transport vital information.

As in the years before 2013, we may all be entitled to our own taste and preferences. I think that GEX still has its place, that the free updates (and discounts for existing customers) are a treat and that.. I still will be locking at FTX Global soon as I might indeed like it some more when checking the screenshots.

And welcome to the forums, troppo1.

I think a lot of people were just like us and were looking and waiting for Global to get fixed. If I had known GEX was a free update then maybe I would have looked at it earlier. Still watching Global but buying GEX at the moment. Framerates and eyecandy are the most important thing for me,,after price that is.

thanks for the welcome.

So, how do you know that FTXG don't have better fps then GEX? Eyecandy, price and some more other things are definitely better...

sorry, I have heard that Global has good framerates, but I already have had probs with 3d grass on my pc, so thats what reference was about, sorry I know people are sensative about these things and didnt mean to imply something that I hadnt tried myself

so I have done a flight at ksfo without bluesky scenery turned on and it just isnt the same. Bluesky will be staying for CA and I will stay with GEX for the hilly country and places that bluesky arent covering while keeping an eye on what else is happening with Global.

Most of the complains was about the uninstaller, didn't bother me as Im used to not having it(Orbx never had unistaller for their scenerys).

I have GEX from a time before I got into Orbx scenery, looking at screenshoots, comparing GEX2 with FTX Global It wasn't hard to decide that I would buy Global and never look back, even if I could get the GEX upgrade for free...

Since I already have all the regions their colours would also match better when crossing the border between FTX regions and FTX global..

You mean 3lights? The 3d lights that comes with global has almost no impact on performance and can also be disabled.(and the new patch will even make them even more FPS friendly)

One more pluss for Global if you have their regions, is the hybrid mode wich let you have all the regions active at once. For me the hybrid mode has become a set and forget thing, now I never have to think about the awful region switching. There was supposed to be some anomilies with the hybrid mode, but so far I haven't seen them. B)

Yes the uninstaller was the biggest setback, any software that doesnt come with an uninstaller and people were posting that they had to redo the sim was big stopper for me. I have never had a prob With the few orbx airports I have and PNW except for frame rates and had never needed to uninstall before, until I started watching Globals forum. was a bit worrying. Anyway they are fixing the probs so all should be well and good, I'll still wait till I see more posative posts come out and I have had a copy version for a while now that I got from a mate but he wouldnt install it iether,( made me wary that did) so it still sits on the server somewhere. And no I meant 3d grass at the orbx aiports, it was really hard on my pc so had to keep it turned off to be flyable.

May I ask what got you worried? Alot of people seem to not understand FTX Global limits, it's just a texture replacement and won't improve the poor default  landclass. Alot of the complaints is just unfair, like the checkerboard effect, well guess what, it's not FTX Global fault it's just because the default landclass is bad. This can be corrected with other landclass addons like e.g UTX etc.

And from what I have seen most people that have bought FTX Global is very happy with it and won't uninstall. 90% of the comments on Global I have seen have been positive, and the other 10% complaining will always be there and they will complain no matter how good products get released(some people love to nitpick and complain, like it's an hobby in itself).

Ah ok, yeah 3d grass can have a real hit on most systems especially if that airport is located in an already poor performing area like around Seattle. Other Places where the performance is usually good the 3d grass works fine. I disable it everywhere it causes issues or atleast trim it a little. That's what's great about the Orbx Control panel is that you can tune every airport to perform how you like with just disabling/enabling things.

nothing really got me worried so much as having to reinstall my sim or pc. This pc was put together  and tweaked by michael from FSGS, So it's old but still works fine and is very sensitive to some things. When Mike died we lost a great man who I could ring and ask if something was worth buying or not, now I have to reseach, ask, downlaod and try first on another pc or go and see a freind 500klm away to see what he has before I install it on the flight pc, Mike said yes to Orbx PNW and Alaska and we flew them a lot, but now he's gone we are very carefull about what goes on the flight pc. We already had GEX REX so updates were always allowed and that helped the decision.

I agree 10% of wingers will always will always post ###### but people were complaing about core files being changed, and no uninstaller to back them up back to normal. Also too much green.

Yes and the unistaller has now been realesed, people have always complained about Orbx not having uninstallers so Im a bit surprised that Orbx was even making an effort to make one for FTX Global(so your biggest fear have been fixed). The green desert I think is actually the default landclass fault, but they have fixed this issue too with adding more correct landclass and the patch will soon be released.

So it seems they have ironed out most of the complaints(so that tells me that they actually listens to customer feedback and that is also a good thing, even the haters get through), but I'm sure the haters can come up with more to complain about.

And last, find me a person that has installed FTX Global and didn't like it and then wanting to get rid of it(except Nick for obvious reasons :P ).

Kaboki, my prob was I coundnt find anyone close that Had Global installed let alone had it and unistalled it, and I have no idea who Nick is, sorry. But your right, Orbx have listened and are making changes, so in the end we will have 2 choices, Orbx  for top end pc's that can run the 3D grass and GEX for those who cant or wont. Choice is always good.

I love the few orbx airports and regions that I have bought and I love Bluesky scenery even better( and it's free, even tho I donate every time he brings a scenery out.( he loves me i'm sure )

I hated Default scenery intensly, But, a free update of GEX has changed that. The new GEX Europe is absolutely fantastic, go do a run from Innsbrug up through the valley to really see what default scenery should look like. That was so worth buying that I am now looking at the others also.

Orbx for top end pc's that can run the 3D grass and GEX for those who cant or wont

Whats up with the 3d grass, FTX Global does not have any 3d grass at all so it would run just as good as GEX. Only seen 3d Grass on their payware airport, but that can be disabled if your computer can't handle it.

And Nick is the developer of your beloved GEX, he was the guy that ignited the whole uninstaller debate and scared alot of people with alot of ###### how global would mess up FSX.

I think he was trying to scare people into buying GEX instead :P

ok, well it worked. After being scared into getting a free update to GEX and seeing how good it is, I am now buying more of it.
