Dawn Dusk Smoothing with Steve's Fixer

Featured Replies

Just a quick update regarding the "DawnDuskSmoothing" statement in the fsx.cfg file.....

I have just completed a short flight in the UK in the PMDG 737NGX. I started my flight just before the upper limb of the Sun started to appear above the horizon, and completed it when the Sun was clear of the horizon.

I did not see any difference whatsoever to the sky graphics with DawnDuskSmoothing set to "0".

The stars were still visible all over the sky at dawn, so nothing has changed there. However, since it has clearly sorted my problem with respect to excessively dark ground textures at UK2000 Xtreme airports, I will be keeping this little adjustment

It should be noted that I use REX Essential, so I do not know if this adds some kind of separate smoothing effect. Maybe someone without REX (or any other weather addon) could check out the dawn and dusk effects with DawnDuskSmoothing set to "0", and let us know what (if anything) happens?

Dubai works ok at night, I can live without the lights the fixer was unable to take care of.

Can someone explain where to disable the PAPI and runway edge lights at OMDB? Numerous people have said they disabled them but I'm not quite sure what files I need to rename to disable these.

Steve McNitt

I have the same issue. I disabled the PAPI, but the lead lights show as black rectangles at FT Dubai. Will this be addressed as well?

I fixed the problem with the black billboard runway lights. In the fixer config app, under "General Shader Options", insure that the "8 bit texture fix" option is NOT checked, I was also running the Lights Bloom slider at 80%. I put it back to 100%. Not sure if the latter was the cause if the problem, I suspect it was the 8bit fix option that was causing it.

The papi lights are in bgl files called *papi.bgl in the scenery directory - there are several one for each runway.

Assuming that you are referring to the ALS approach lights they are in bgl files called *apprlights.bgl

Make sure that you keep them safe somewhere

Gentlemen, I got the DX10 Fixer tool yesterday and am overall extremely happy with the results - so kudos to Steve for all the work!

But I also have the excessive reflection issue, in my case with the Aerosoft EDDS airport scenery. And while I might be able to live with the apron and runways looking like a mirror, with that addon it is a lot worse: all the ground texture around the airport are a 100% mirror!

I tried the General Shaders->Reflections slider, but that doesn't change anything even when set to 0%. I did not yet try the DawnDuskSmoothing setting.
I really want to keep using DX10, but EDDS is my home airport... so please, if there is any chance to fix this, give me a hint! I'll try DawnDuskSmoothing now, but that seems to be a less than optimal workaround...

EDIT: I just tried playing with all apparently relevant settings and sliders in the DX10 Fixer tool (set the overall weighting slider to 'Scenery' step-wise, disabled/enabled DX10 reflections, Reflections slider all the way to 0 and some intermittent steps, no joy.
DawnDuskSmoothing=0 fixed it though - I'll have to find out what that does to the 'dawn experience'; digital switching would not be nice, but better than the mirror-landscape.

I'd still request people in the know to look into this, maybe there is a better way to deal with this?

Cool - no worries, no problem with waiting, as long as it's being addressed. If you need someone to beta-test that fix on Aerosoft EDDS, let me know...

Ok the fix has fixed EDDS. You might have to put up with the light poles going off at different view points.

Thanks for checking! Looking forward to the new version then, once ORBX released their LC and vector addons to FTX and now with DX10, we're actually getting some new life into this old sim...

Last question: will the updated version also be distributed through flightsimstore? Or should I watch a forum space somewhere?

Just watch this forum. PJ or Steve will let everyone know. Enjoy the DX10 experience.

It will come through flightsim - you will get an email from flight sim notifying you when its ready.  The manual will contain  contact details for me as well this time (sorry!)

If you can bear with me I imagine it will be towards the end of the week.

There are a couple of installation issues to tidy up - it fails if people have converted their bkg.bmp into a dds

Further testing tonight has confirmed that my dawn and dusk transitions to daylight are just as smooth with DawnDuskSmoothing set to "0" as they are when set to "1". If that should not be the case, then I can only assume that REX Essential is controlling this for me.
